If ChatGPT keeps giving you generic answers, make the request easier to understand: say what you need, provide the relevant context, and describe the answer you want. Then use the first reply to identify what to clarify. OpenAI recommends clear, specific prompts and an iterative approach, but these steps are practical guidance—not a guarantee that an answer will be accurate.
Why ChatGPT may be missing what you need
A short request can leave important choices unstated: who the answer is for, what it should cover, what to leave out, or how it should be formatted. For example, “Help me write a proposal” does not tell ChatGPT what the proposal is for or what a successful draft should include.

OpenAI’s Help Center advises users to make prompts clear and specific and provide enough context for the model to understand the request. Its guidance also describes prompt writing as iterative: review the reply, then adjust the request if the result misses the mark. OpenAI’s prompt engineering best practices and its guide to creating a good prompt offer the underlying recommendations.

What to include in a useful prompt
For each task, give ChatGPT the information that changes what a good answer would look like. You do not need special syntax; ordinary, direct language is enough.
#1 Best Overall
- Task: State the action you want, such as drafting, explaining, summarizing, or comparing.
- Context: Include relevant facts, source material, background, or the intended audience.
- Priorities and constraints: Say what to focus on, what to exclude, and any requirements the answer must meet.
- Output: Specify a useful format and, when it matters, an approximate length.
- Tone: Describe the style you want, such as concise, practical, or formal.
A reusable example based on these principles—not an official OpenAI template—is: “I need you to [task]. Context: [relevant facts or source material]. Focus on [priorities]. Give me [format and approximate length]. Use a [tone] tone. If key information is missing, ask me before assuming.”

Before
“Help me write a proposal.”
After
“Draft a one-page project proposal for a neighborhood food pantry seeking a $5,000 local grant. Include the need, a three-month plan, expected outcomes, and a concise budget summary. Use a clear, practical tone; flag any missing facts instead of inventing them.”
The second request gives ChatGPT a purpose, audience, scope, required sections, and a style target. That helps define the assignment; it does not independently verify the facts in the eventual draft.
How to improve a weak first answer
Do not restart from scratch automatically. Identify what was wrong—too broad, missing a point, wrong format, or aimed at the wrong audience—and make that correction explicit in a follow-up. For example: “You gave me a broad overview. Narrow it to [audience/use case], include [missing points], and return it as [format]. Ask me if you need a key detail.”
Rank #3
If the answer still misses, add the necessary information or simplify the task. Treat each follow-up as a way to narrow the gap between the response and the result you wanted, not as a magic phrase that guarantees a better answer.
When to split a task into stages
A request that bundles several different deliverables can be harder to steer than a focused one. OpenAI recommends breaking complex work into smaller tasks and using follow-up prompts. For instance, you can first ask for an outline, then request a draft of one section, and finally ask for a revision against specific criteria. This makes it easier to assess each result and correct direction before moving on.

What belongs in a recurring preference
Keep task-specific requirements in the prompt for that task. If you repeatedly want the same general preferences—such as a particular tone or formatting approach—ChatGPT offers personalization settings that can provide that background across conversations.
Custom Instructions
Custom Instructions let you share information for ChatGPT to consider in its responses. OpenAI says they can be edited or deleted and lists availability on web, desktop, iOS, and Android across plans. See the Custom Instructions help article for current details.

Characteristics
Characteristics are response-style controls, with examples including warmth, enthusiasm, headers and lists, and emoji use. OpenAI describes them as working alongside the selected personality, Custom Instructions, and saved memories. They adjust style preferences rather than the underlying capability to do a task. Consult the Characteristics help article for the feature’s current details.
Neither kind of setting replaces the context and requirements of the current request. Interface labels and feature availability can change, so check ChatGPT’s current settings and OpenAI’s help pages if you need exact navigation.
What better prompting can—and cannot—do
Clearer requests give ChatGPT a more useful target and can reduce avoidable ambiguity. They do not ensure that every answer will be correct, complete, or suitable for your situation. The official guidance cited here does not report a quantified improvement or guarantee that one prompt structure works for everyone. Review important answers and verify consequential factual claims against appropriate sources.
