To extend a cordless work light’s runtime on one charge, first reduce its brightness to the lowest setting that still illuminates the task. If the light supports batteries of different capacities, a higher-capacity compatible battery may also keep it running longer. Both adjustments are model-specific: check the light’s manual and manufacturer specifications for the stated settings, battery and runtime.
Lower the brightness when the task allows
A dimmer setting uses less output, which can extend runtime on some lights. Bosch says the dim function on its FL12 doubles runtime, but that is a claim for that model—not a result you should assume for other work lights. Use a lower setting only if it still provides enough light to work safely and accurately.

Other models offer multiple brightness settings. For example, Bosch lists 800- and 1,200-lumen settings for its GLI18V-1200CN. The product page’s runtime figure is specifically “up to 10.6 hours” at 1,200 lumens with an optional 18V CORE18V 8.0 Ah battery; it does not establish the runtime at 800 lumens. Check whether a higher-capacity compatible battery is supported
Some lights accept compatible batteries with different capacities. A larger-capacity battery may extend runtime, but the amount depends on the specific light and battery combination. Bosch lists six hours with a 12V 2.0 Ah battery and 12 hours with a 4.0 Ah battery for the FL12. Those are manufacturer figures for this model, not a universal formula for predicting runtime from amp-hours.

Before buying or swapping batteries, confirm compatibility in the light’s manual or official product materials. The products in the examples below belong to different manufacturer battery systems; a battery that fits one platform should not be assumed to work with another.
Read runtime figures with their conditions
A runtime number is useful only alongside the light model, brightness setting and battery named in the claim. Manufacturer figures are not necessarily measured under matched conditions, so they do not provide a reliable cross-brand performance ranking.

Position a pivoting or adjustable light head to illuminate the task rather than an unused area. This helps direct the available light where it is needed, but the product information cited here does not quantify a runtime benefit from repositioning. Treat aiming as a way to improve illumination, not as a proven battery-saving method.

Use this checklist before a long job
- Identify the exact work-light model and its available brightness or dim settings.
- Check the manufacturer’s runtime notes for the battery and setting you plan to use.
- Confirm that any higher-capacity or spare battery is compatible with that light.
- If one battery will not cover the work session, consider a second charged compatible battery for a swap; runtime depends on the specific batteries and light.
- Aim the light at the task and choose the lowest setting that remains adequate for the work.
