To get internet through a router, connect its WAN or Internet port to an active upstream connection, set the WAN connection type required by your internet provider, and connect your devices to the router’s Wi-Fi. With a separate modem, the usual connection is modem Ethernet to router WAN; with building-provided Ethernet, the wall jack may connect directly to WAN. The right setup depends on the equipment and service at your home.
Identify what provides your internet connection
A router distributes a connection; it does not create an internet service by itself. A modem converts an incoming line—such as coax, telephone, or fiber—into Ethernet for a router. Google Nest Help explains the distinction in its modem overview. Some ISP devices combine modem and router functions in one gateway.

Before connecting cables, identify which setup you have:
| Setup | Upstream connection | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Separate modem and router | Modem Ethernet output to the router’s WAN/Internet port | The router’s WAN settings must match the ISP’s requirements. |
| ISP gateway and a second router | Gateway Ethernet port to the second router’s WAN/Internet port | The gateway may need adjustment so the intended router is primary. |
| Building-provided Ethernet | Building wall jack to the router’s WAN/Internet port | The building or ISP may require particular settings; a separate modem may not be needed. |
These arrangements are not interchangeable in every building or service plan. Follow the ISP’s equipment and installation instructions when they differ.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Connect the upstream cable to the WAN port
- Power off the modem if you have a separate modem, then connect an Ethernet cable from its Ethernet output to the router port labeled WAN or Internet. If the service comes from a building Ethernet jack, connect that jack to WAN instead.
- Use an Ethernet cable, not a phone lead. The cable should have RJ45 connectors; an RJ11 telephone lead is not a substitute.
- Restart the equipment. TP-Link’s setup guide instructs users to restart the modem and wait about two minutes before powering on the router. That is the timing in that guide, not a universal requirement for all equipment. See TP-Link’s router setup guide.
TP-Link estimates approximately 5 to 10 minutes for the setup process described in that guide; this is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a measured or guaranteed time for every router or ISP.
Set the router’s WAN connection type
Join the router’s temporary or default Wi-Fi network, or connect a computer to it with Ethernet. Open the router maker’s setup app or local setup page and follow the instructions for your exact model. TP-Link’s classic web guide uses tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 as examples, but those addresses are not universal. Interface names and steps can vary by router model and firmware.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Choose the WAN connection type specified by your ISP. Common options include:
- Dynamic IP: The router obtains its address automatically from the service.
- PPPoE: Enter the username and password supplied by the ISP.
- Static IP: Enter the fixed address and related network settings supplied by the ISP.
- VLAN settings: Some services require a VLAN ID in addition to the connection type.
If you do not know which option applies, ask the ISP for the connection type and any required credentials or VLAN information rather than guessing. After the WAN connection is configured, set a Wi-Fi network name and password in the router’s setup interface. Keep the administrator password distinct from the Wi-Fi password if the setup process offers separate fields.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check whether internet access works
- Finish the router setup and wait for it to report an internet or WAN connection.
- Connect a phone or computer to the router’s Wi-Fi and open a website.
- If the device joins Wi-Fi but cannot reach websites, check the WAN indicator and follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Fix a router connected but with no internet
Work from the upstream service toward the router so you can isolate the failure:
- Check the WAN link. Confirm the Ethernet plug is firmly seated in the modem’s Ethernet output and the router’s WAN/Internet port. Verify that you used an RJ45 Ethernet cable, not an RJ11 phone lead.
- Test the upstream service directly. If you have a separate modem, connect a computer to it with Ethernet and check whether internet access works. Follow any ISP-specific steps for bringing a computer online.
- If the direct test fails, contact the ISP. The problem may be with the modem or service; ask the provider to verify the connection and any required settings.
- If the direct test works, try another Ethernet cable. Then check the router’s WAN connection type and credentials against the ISP’s instructions, and consult the troubleshooting guide for your router model.
For additional model-specific checks, TP-Link provides a router troubleshooting guide for internet connection problems. Steps and interface labels may differ for other manufacturers.

Do you need a modem with a router?
Not always. A separate modem is generally used when the ISP’s incoming line needs to be converted to Ethernet before reaching a standalone router. If your ISP supplied a gateway that combines modem and router functions, it may already provide both internet access and Wi-Fi. If a building supplies Ethernet service, you may be able to connect a router directly to its wall jack. Your ISP or building may still require particular equipment, credentials, or configuration.
