In OBS, use noise suppression for mild background noise, compression to tame loud peaks, and a limiter to help prevent clipping—not as substitutes for fixing a noisy room or a badly placed mic.
1. Reduce noise at the source
Choose the quietest practical location and listen for wind, traffic, appliances, HVAC, keyboard sounds, and computer fans. YouTube recommends a quiet location and specifically flags wind, traffic, and appliances as possible sources of interference in its live filming tips.

Move away from the noise, close a window, silence nearby devices, or reduce fan and appliance noise if possible. OBS says noise suppression is intended for mild background or white noise and generally does not work well against substantial noise in a loud room. Fixing the source is usually more effective than increasing suppression.

YouTube notes that using a microphone can improve audio. If a built-in laptop or webcam mic sounds distant or picks up too much room noise, a separate mic may help; Shure’s MV7 user guide, for example, lists live streaming and content creation among its use cases. That does not make any one microphone ideal for every room, device, or budget: placement, room noise, and input level still matter.

- Place the mic consistently and speak at the distance and volume you expect during the broadcast.
- Listen for hum, crackle, room echo, or a muffled sound before adding processing.
3. Set levels before adding filters
Speak at your normal live volume while watching the input meter. Adjust the mic input so ordinary speech is clearly registered without reaching the clipping zone or sounding distorted. Check both normal speech and the loudest likely moments—such as laughter or an emphatic phrase. If the source is too quiet, modest gain can raise it; gain also raises background noise, so address room sound first.
OBS describes its audio filters as separate tools for separate problems. The right amount depends on your microphone and environment, so adjust while monitoring rather than treating any setting as universal.

4. Use OBS filters for the problem they solve
In OBS, open the audio source’s Filters to add and arrange processing. OBS’s filter guide describes the roles below.
Recommended Free Tools
| Tool | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Gain | Boosts a quiet source. | When your mic input is too low after checking the device and speaking position. Use cautiously because it can raise noise too. |
| Noise Suppression | Reduces mild background or white noise. | For modest fan or environmental noise, not a loud room. OBS describes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive, while Speex is configurable; strong Speex suppression can distort speech. See the OBS noise suppression guidance. |
| Noise Gate | Cuts off quieter sound when you are not speaking. | When background sound between phrases is the problem. Set it carefully so it does not cut off the starts or ends of words. |
| Expander | Reduces lower-level sound more gradually than a fixed gate. | When you want quieter background sound between speech without as abrupt a cutoff. |
| Compressor | Makes loud sounds quieter, reducing volume variation. | When some spoken phrases are much louder than others. OBS says a compressor is typically placed at or near the beginning of the filter chain; it can also duck desktop audio while you speak over music or game audio. See the OBS compressor guide. |
| Limiter | Restrains peaks above its threshold to help prevent clipping. | As a final peak-control stage. OBS says the limiter should be last in the filter chain; it does not replace sensible input levels. See the OBS limiter guide. |
After each change, listen to speech and watch for pumping, distortion, clipped syllables, or an unnaturally gated voice. Too much suppression can make speech sound processed; an aggressive gate can remove quiet words. Back off the relevant filter if intelligibility gets worse.

5. Test the actual stream, not just the local mic
- Set up the scene, microphone, filters, and other audio sources as they will be during the live event.
- Run a short test with speech and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and suggests using an unlisted live stream for a test.
- Preview the stream and listen to its playback, ideally from the viewer side or another device. A local mic monitor may not sound exactly like the encoded stream viewers receive.
- Check speech during quiet passages and loud moments, and confirm that music or game sound does not overpower the voice.
- Keep monitoring audio and video quality during the event. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend monitoring the stream; its encoder settings guidance also advises keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth with headroom and checking stream preview.
6. Troubleshoot common audio problems
| What viewers hear | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Voice sounds distant or room-heavy | The mic is too far away, or the room is noisy or echoing. | Move to a quieter place, reduce reflective or noisy surroundings where practical, and speak at a consistent distance from the mic. |
| Fan or appliance noise remains | The noise is too loud for suppression to handle reliably. | Reduce it at the source or change location first; use suppression only for the remaining mild noise. |
| Voice sounds distorted or harsh | The input may be too high, or processing may be too strong. | Lower the mic level or back off suppression/compression, then test again at normal and loud speaking levels. |
| Words disappear at the start or end | A gate or expander threshold may be too aggressive. | Relax the setting and test quiet speech and word endings, not only full-volume phrases. |
| Voice volume jumps between phrases | Speaking distance or level varies, or dynamics are not controlled. | Keep mic position consistent; if needed, adjust compression while listening for pumping. A limiter handles peaks, not general loudness variation. |
| Local monitoring sounds fine but stream playback does not | The monitored source may differ from the encoded stream mix. | Listen to a test stream’s playback and verify the selected input and final stream mix. |
| Stream preview or delivery is unstable | Available upload bandwidth may not have enough headroom for the total bitrate. | Check YouTube’s encoder guidance and preview the stream. This is a delivery issue; if the stream is stable but speech is unclear, return to the mic, room, level, and filter checks. |
