How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews: A Developer’s GEO Guide

There is no guaranteed way to earn an AI citation. Learn the distinct Google and OpenAI access checks, the content practices supported by current guidance, and how to monitor visibility and referrals.

You cannot guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will cite a page. The practical route is to make it accessible to each service, eligible for its search experience, and useful enough to cite—then measure the traffic and visibility you can actually observe. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on ordinary Google Search eligibility; ChatGPT Search has its own crawler controls, including OAI-SearchBot.

What GEO means for developers

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of improving whether content can be found and used in AI-powered search experiences. It is not a separate, proven set of ranking hacks: Google says its AI Search experiences remain rooted in its core Search systems, while OpenAI documents a separate crawler for ChatGPT Search.

That distinction matters. A page may be technically accessible yet not selected as a source, and a page that appears once is not guaranteed to appear again. Google Search Central’s AI-features guidance says: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search: what differs

Question Google AI Overviews and AI Mode ChatGPT Search
Crawler and access controls Google Search crawling and indexing controls apply. Make sure robots.txt, hosting, CDN, and other access rules do not block the page. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT Search. GPTBot is a separate control related to potential model training; ChatGPT-User serves some user-initiated visits and does not determine Search inclusion.
Eligibility The page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or display. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot for content to be discovered, summarized, and cited. Its documentation does not promise that allowing the crawler will produce a citation.
Documented guidance Follow ordinary Search fundamentals. Google says no special AI schema or llms.txt file is needed for its AI features. Allow the relevant search crawler if you want ChatGPT Search to be able to access your pages. OpenAI documents crawler purposes and access controls, not a guaranteed citation formula.
Measurement Google Search Console reports Search performance; AI-feature traffic is included in the overall Web search performance report. Analytics tools can identify referral traffic from ChatGPT. OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com.

How to check and improve your site’s eligibility

1. Check the page’s ordinary Google Search status

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, start with the same foundations as ordinary Search. Confirm that the page can be crawled, is indexed, and is eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Google’s AI-features documentation says there are no additional technical requirements for these experiences, but eligibility is not a guarantee of service or display.

  • Review robots.txt and any hosting, CDN, firewall, or bot-management rules that may prevent Google from accessing the page.
  • Make important page content available as text, use internal links so it can be discovered, and check that the page works well across devices.
  • If you use structured data, ensure it accurately matches content visible to users. Structured data can still help with eligibility for supported rich results, but Google does not require special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

2. Check OpenAI’s search crawler separately

Review robots.txt and network controls for OAI-SearchBot if you want a page to be discoverable in ChatGPT Search. OpenAI says search-crawler settings are independent: a site can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot. That lets site owners make a Search-access decision separately from their preference about potential training use.

Do not treat a robots.txt review as the whole check. Compare firewall, CDN, and bot-management rules against OpenAI’s current crawler documentation and published IP ranges. OpenAI’s crawler documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, says Search systems may take approximately 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change; the timing is approximate, not a guarantee.

3. Make the page worth citing

Access only makes retrieval possible. Google’s May 15, 2026 generative AI guide recommends useful, distinctive, people-first content rather than commodity pages that rearrange common material. For a developer-facing page, answer the task directly, explain which platform controls apply, give readers checks they can perform, and distinguish established requirements from unknown behavior.

Organize the content for people, use primary documentation for platform-specific claims, and avoid publishing many near-duplicate pages just to target query variations. If generative AI assists with drafting or research, the finished page still needs to meet Google’s Search Essentials and spam policies. These practices align with Google’s guidance; none is a formula that guarantees citation.

Does llms.txt help AI search?

For Google Search visibility, Google’s May 15, 2026 guide says llms.txt has no effect. It also says Google does not require breaking every article into tiny “chunks,” rewriting content specifically for AI systems, targeting every long-tail phrasing, seeking inauthentic mentions, or adding special schema for AI Overviews and AI Mode. This is guidance about Google Search; it should not be generalized into a claim about every other platform.

That does not make all technical SEO or structured data irrelevant. Google’s guidance says structured data may still support eligibility for rich results when it follows the relevant guidelines and matches visible page content. Use it for its documented purposes, not as an AI-citation switch.

How to track ChatGPT referrals and Google Search performance

Google Search Console

Use Google Search Console to review Search performance. Google’s current guide identifies a Generative AI performance report for Google Search and Discover, and its AI-features documentation says AI-feature traffic is included in the overall Web search performance report. Where the relevant reporting is available, compare impressions and clicks over time alongside downstream behavior, while noting changes to queries and your site content.

Web analytics

OpenAI says publishers that allow OAI-SearchBot can use analytics tools to track ChatGPT referral traffic. Look for referral URLs containing utm_source=chatgpt.com to help distinguish that traffic. A referral is evidence of a visit, not proof that a page will keep appearing or that a particular site change caused a citation.

Interpret both sources of measurement as observations, not controlled tests. Google says AI Overviews may not appear for every query and that its AI experiences can use query fan-out—related searches to gather information for a response. The links shown can vary, so one manual query or one observed citation cannot establish a stable site-wide result.

What GEO studies can—and cannot—tell you

Aggarwal and coauthors’ GEO paper, accepted to KDD 2024, reports an “up to 40%” result from its GEO-bench experiments. That is a maximum reported improvement in a bounded experimental setup, with effectiveness varying by domain. It is not a promise that any site will gain 40%, a measurement of present-day ChatGPT or Google performance, or a guaranteed increase in citations.

A 2025 arXiv preprint by Chen and coauthors reports differences among the AI search services they tested in source mix, domain diversity, freshness, cross-language stability, and sensitivity to phrasing. The authors also report stronger use of earned media in their tested AI Search systems than in their Google comparison. Those findings describe the tested platforms and conditions; they do not establish a universal ranking formula.

Developer checklist

  • For Google, verify indexing and Search-snippet eligibility before expecting a page to be considered for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • Check robots.txt and network-level access controls for the relevant crawler; treat Google and OpenAI controls as separate.
  • Keep page content accessible, internally linked, usable across devices, and accurate. Use structured data only where it matches visible content and serves a documented purpose.
  • Write a distinctive answer for the reader’s actual task instead of producing thin variations for every query phrasing.
  • Measure Search Console performance and ChatGPT referrals where available, but do not treat a single appearance or traffic change as proof of a repeatable tactic.
