To improve at NYT Strands without hints, treat the theme as a clue to a category, test likely words against the grid, and check diagonal and turning paths—not just straight lines. Look for a possible spangram that connects opposite sides, then use each solved word to narrow the theme and organize your scan of the letters you have not used.
Know what the grid allows
Strands asks you to find theme words in a letter grid. A word is traced through adjacent cells horizontally, vertically, or diagonally; its path may turn, but it cannot reuse a cell within that word. The spangram is a word or phrase that connects two opposite sides of the grid and reveals the theme. The choice to avoid hints is a choice to do the inference yourself: the paper describes a hint as identifying the letters of a theme word, with a subsequent hint showing their order. You can instead build information gradually from the theme, candidate words, and the paths that fit.

1. Turn the theme into candidate words
Read the theme as a category, phrase, association, or wordplay clue rather than as a complete explanation. List a few plausible answers mentally. For a broad theme, try different interpretations instead of committing to the first one. Once you find a word, ask what it suggests about the theme and what other words might belong beside it.

2. Test a spangram hypothesis
Consider whether a word or phrase that fits your interpretation could run from one side of the board to the opposite side. Trace its letters through neighboring cells, including diagonals and bends. If the path does not work, discard the candidate; do not force letters to fit. A valid spangram can clarify the theme and make the other answers easier to predict, but it is not necessary to find it first.
3. Search around turns and diagonals
When you can see a plausible word in the letters but not in a straight line, check adjacent cells around corners. Diagonal connections are allowed, and a word can change direction mid-path. Looking only along rows and columns can make an answer seem absent when its actual route bends through the grid.

4. Use word structure as a prompt, not a rule
Prefixes, suffixes, plurals, compounds, and familiar endings can suggest candidates. For example, endings such as “-ING,” “-TION,” or “-ED” may help you notice a possible word. They are search prompts, not guarantees about the puzzle’s answer set; test every candidate against both the theme and a valid path.
5. Update your theory after each find
A solved theme word is evidence about the category, and its cells are no longer available for another word. Revisit your candidate list and inspect the remaining letters rather than restarting your search from scratch. The puzzle’s theme words and spangram account for the board, so a cluster of leftover letters may point to an overlooked path or a mistaken interpretation.

6. Scan the remaining grid systematically
Instead of repeatedly sweeping the whole board without a plan, choose an unused letter or small cluster and trace plausible neighboring paths from it. Keep track of which cells have been claimed. If the remaining letters appear isolated or do not form plausible words, reconsider nearby bends, diagonals, or a candidate you accepted too quickly.
Choose a starting point that suits the puzzle
There is no established universally best order for solving. Independent strategy guides suggest finding the spangram early, while another useful approach is to begin with a likely theme word and let it reveal the category. These are compatible tactics, not experimentally ranked methods: the available sources do not report head-to-head results or show that one order improves success for every player.

After a puzzle, take a moment to identify what changed your mind: a theme word, a spangram candidate, a diagonal connection, or a better scan of the remaining letters. On a later puzzle, deliberately try that reasoning earlier. The available sources support these as practical habits, but do not establish a measured improvement rate or a guaranteed method.
If you decide to use the game’s hint system on a difficult puzzle, the academic paper describes its behavior as requiring three valid words that are not in the solution before a hint unlocks; a hint identifies the letters of a theme word, and taking another immediately afterward reveals their order. That is the point at which the game supplies information you could otherwise continue trying to infer.
