Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGet a barrier block with a command: in Java Edition, enter /give @s minecraft:barrier; in Bedrock Edition, enter /give @s barrier. You must have commands enabled in your single-player world or permission to use commands on a server. In Bedrock single-player, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world.
Get a barrier block with a command
- Check your edition and command access. In Bedrock single-player, open the world’s Game settings and enable Allow Cheats. In Java single-player, enable Allow Commands when creating the world, or use the setting in World Options. On a multiplayer server, you need sufficient permission; ask the operator if you do not have it. Minecraft’s command guide explains these access requirements.
- Open chat. Commands entered in chat begin with a slash. The general item-giving format is
/give <player> <item> [amount]. - Enter the command for your edition:
- Java Edition:
/give @s minecraft:barrier - Bedrock Edition:
/give @s barrier
Here,
@stargets the command’s executor, so the block goes to you. To give it to another player, replace@swith their player name or an appropriate target selector. - Java Edition:
Bedrock’s current stable item registry lists both minecraft:barrier and barrier as identifiers: Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock item list. If the command is rejected by your installed version or platform, type /give in chat and use the game’s suggestions to check accepted names and arguments.

Why you cannot find barriers in the inventory
Barrier blocks are not in the ordinary Creative inventory. A Minecraft Education support reply says to obtain them with /give; it does not provide an exact command example. For Education Edition, enter /give and follow the suggestions shown by your installed version.
Barriers are commonly documented as invisible during ordinary use and visible while held, though appearance may vary by version or resource pack. A user-contributed Minecraft Feedback post describes this behavior; it is not authoritative syntax documentation: Minecraft Feedback.

Fix command errors or missing permission
- “Unknown item” or syntax error: Check that you used the command for Java or Bedrock, then use chat autocomplete. Microsoft Learn lists the Bedrock identifiers, and Minecraft’s command guide describes suggestions for command arguments.
- The command is rejected in single-player: Check the world’s command setting. For Bedrock, enabling Allow Cheats disables achievements for that world permanently, even if you later turn cheats off.
- You are on someone else’s server: The server owner or operator controls command access. Ask them to grant the required permission.
For the command format and permission details, see Minecraft’s official command guide.
