If you need the unwatermarked version of a stock image preview, license that exact asset through the agency and use the file it supplies. If you are the photographer, start with the original file you control; owning the copyright does not automatically settle what you may do with an agency-hosted preview under a separate contributor agreement.

How to get the unwatermarked file from major stock agencies
Adobe Stock
Open the asset’s page or your account workflow and license the exact image. Adobe Stock says: “When you use a watermarked preview image or video and then license the asset, the watermark is removed and you receive the asset in its highest available resolution.” Use the delivered licensed file, not an edited preview. Shutterstock
License the image through Shutterstock to receive its unwatermarked version. Shutterstock’s Help Center says, “You can receive an unwatermarked image by licensing the image.” Its Terms of Use state: “You may not remove any watermarks or copyright notices contained in the Shutterstock Content.” Shutterstock Help Center: Can I get comp Images or Clips? If you are the photographer or copyright owner
Copyright ownership and permission under an agency contract are related but distinct questions. Adobe’s contributor agreement says contributors retain ownership except for licenses granted under the agreement. That does not, by itself, establish that you may remove a watermark from an agency-hosted preview or bypass its customer workflow. Find and use the original file you control when possible; for the agency copy, check the applicable contributor agreement and ask the agency if the terms or asset status are unclear. Shutterstock also requires uploaders to represent that they have necessary rights and that their content does not infringe others’ rights. If your image includes other people’s work or identifiable subjects, account for applicable rights and releases before uploading or licensing it. Shutterstock Terms of Use
A license gives use rights, not necessarily ownership
Licensing the asset is the supported way to obtain the agency’s unwatermarked file, but it does not necessarily transfer ownership or grant unrestricted use. Adobe’s license terms restrict sharing or distributing an asset in a way that lets others use it without their own license. Check the current license for the specific asset and your planned use. An editing tool can alter pixels; it cannot establish permission to use the image. Do not crop, clone, or use an AI tool to defeat a watermark on agency content when the agency’s terms prohibit removal. Crediting the photographer, paying for a different asset, or possessing a preview file does not by itself grant rights to use this specific image. Use the agency’s license workflow or the original file you control, subject to any agreements that apply.

What to verify before using the image
- Identify the agency and whether you are acting as a buyer, contributor, or copyright owner.
- Confirm the exact asset’s current status and the license type available.
- Check territory, intended use, and any restrictions in the customer license or contributor agreement.
- Use the unwatermarked file delivered through the authorized workflow, or the original file you control where your agreements permit it.
