The fastest way to get an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is to use the IRS Get an IP PIN tool through your IRS online account. After you complete identity verification, find the six-digit PIN in your account’s Profile section. If you cannot verify your identity online, you may be able to enroll by mailing Form 15227 or by arranging an in-person appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).
First, determine whether you need a new PIN or need to recover one the IRS already assigned. Form 15227 is for eligible first-time opt-ins—not for replacing a lost PIN. An IP PIN is valid for one calendar year, so you will need to get or retrieve a new one each year.

An IP PIN is a number the IRS uses with certain federal income tax returns to help verify that the person filing is you. You can choose to enroll voluntarily if you meet the identity-verification requirements; the IRS also assigns PINs to people confirmed as victims of tax-related identity theft. The right next step depends on which situation applies and whether you can complete online verification.
Choose the right way to get your PIN
The right route depends on whether you can verify your identity online, whether this is a new enrollment, and whether you meet the requirements for Form 15227. The IRS describes the online tool as the fastest option. The processing times for the other routes are estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates.

| Form 15227 | Eligible people making a new opt-in who have no existing assigned IP PIN, meet the applicable AGI limit, have a valid SSN or ITIN, and can be reached by telephone. | The IRS calls to validate identity. It says the PIN is usually mailed within four to six weeks. Enrollment by this route continues annually by mail. |
| Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment | People who cannot verify online, cannot use Form 15227, or are ineligible for that form. | After identity verification in person, the IRS says the PIN is usually mailed within three weeks. |
For a PIN that has already been assigned but is missing, follow the recovery steps below rather than applying again with Form 15227.
In practical terms, start with the online account if you can complete its identity-verification process. If you cannot, check whether you qualify for Form 15227. That form is limited to new applicants who meet every stated requirement; it is not a general substitute for online retrieval. If you are not eligible for the form or cannot use it, request a TAC appointment. A person who already has an assigned PIN should instead use the recovery process, whether the PIN was originally obtained voluntarily or assigned after confirmed identity theft.
What an IP PIN does—and who can get one
An IP PIN is a six-digit number known to you and the IRS. When you file an eligible federal income tax return, the number helps the IRS verify your identity and helps prevent someone else from filing a return using your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). It is an identity-verification credential for covered returns, not a replacement for other information needed to file.
Recommended Free Tools
Enrollment is voluntary for people who choose to opt in, but the IRS also issues IP PINs to confirmed victims of tax-related identity theft. A person with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity may opt in even if they are not required to file a tax return. Parents and legal guardians may request a PIN for dependents as well.
People under 18 must use one of the alternative enrollment routes for a new request rather than the usual online request path. The parent or legal guardian may request the dependent’s PIN, but the adult should follow the IRS instructions for the appropriate alternative route and bring the identity documents required for a dependent if using a TAC appointment.
Get an IP PIN online
Use the online route if you can complete identity verification. The IRS allows a person with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity to opt in proactively, even if they are not required to file a tax return.
- Go to the IRS Get an IP PIN page and open its online tool.
- Sign in to your IRS online account. If you do not have one, create an account and complete the identity-verification process.
- Open the Profile section and view your current IP PIN.
- Keep the PIN available for filing a covered federal income tax return. Retrieve the newly generated PIN each calendar year.
The tool is both the fastest way to enroll and the place to retrieve a current PIN that has already been assigned. If you cannot pass online identity verification, do not keep treating the online route as the only option: check the requirements for Form 15227 or request an appointment at a local TAC. If you successfully enroll online, the IRS does not send a CP01A notice each year; you should retrieve the new PIN through your account.

Apply by mail with Form 15227
Form 15227 is an alternative for a person who cannot complete online identity verification and wants to opt in for the first time. It is not a way to retrieve, replace, or reissue a PIN the IRS has already assigned. Do not submit it if you already have an IP PIN.
For the 2026 revision of Form 15227, the IRS requires that the applicant have no existing assigned PIN, a valid SSN or ITIN, access to a telephone, and adjusted gross income (AGI) on the last filed return below the applicable limit:
- Individual: AGI below $84,000.
- Married filing jointly: AGI below $168,000.
The limits are based on filing status, and the form requires the AGI shown on the last filed return to be below the applicable figure. The form is not available to someone who already has an assigned PIN, even if that person has forgotten the number or cannot find a notice. The applicant also needs a valid SSN or ITIN and telephone access because the IRS calls to validate identity.

These are the limits stated for the 2026 form revision; check the current IRS form and enrollment guidance before applying, since figures and requirements can change. The IRS calls the applicant to validate identity. It says the PIN is usually mailed within four to six weeks, an estimate rather than a delivery guarantee. Enrollment through Form 15227 continues annually by mail.
Allow for that estimated processing time when deciding whether this route will meet your filing needs. If the PIN has already been assigned, applying by mail with Form 15227 will not recover it; use the lost-PIN steps instead. If you do not meet the AGI threshold, do not have a valid SSN or ITIN, or lack telephone access, the form’s eligibility requirements are not met. A TAC appointment is the alternative described by the IRS for people who cannot verify online or cannot use the form.
Request an in-person appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center
If you cannot verify your identity online and cannot use Form 15227—or are not eligible for that form—you can request an in-person appointment at a local TAC. Bring one government-issued photo ID and one additional identity document for yourself.
If you are requesting a PIN for a dependent, the IRS instructions call for the adult to bring the adult’s photo ID and additional identity document, plus two identity documents for the dependent. After identity is verified, the IRS says the PIN is usually mailed within three weeks. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed arrival date.
The TAC route is an identity-verification appointment, not a same-day PIN pickup. The IRS says it usually mails the PIN after verifying identity. Plan for that estimated wait rather than assuming you will leave the appointment with the number. The appointment can be a useful alternative if you cannot complete online verification, do not qualify for Form 15227, or need to make a request for a dependent who must use an alternative enrollment route.

Know when to get the new PIN
An IP PIN is valid for one calendar year, and the IRS generates a new one annually. If you opted in online, retrieve the new PIN through your online account; the IRS does not mail you a CP01A notice. People enrolled because of confirmed tax-related identity theft generally receive a CP01A notice each year.
The online IP PIN tool is generally available from mid-January through mid-November. Year-end maintenance usually makes it unavailable from mid-November to mid-January, although the dates can vary. If you need the PIN for an upcoming return, check the current IRS page and plan around that usual maintenance period rather than assuming the tool will be available every day.
Annual renewal matters even if you have used the program for years: the PIN is not a permanent number. A PIN from a prior calendar year is not the number to enter for the current year’s return. Online enrollees should retrieve the current year’s PIN in their account. People who enrolled through Form 15227 continue the enrollment annually by mail, while people assigned a PIN after confirmed identity theft generally receive a CP01A notice.
Because the tool’s downtime dates can vary, verify current availability on the IRS page before relying on it near the beginning or end of the usual window. If the tool is unavailable and you are trying to retrieve a PIN already assigned, use the recovery guidance below; Form 15227 is not a workaround for an existing participant.
Use the PIN correctly on your tax return
Enter the correct six-digit IP PIN when filing a covered federal income tax return, whether you file electronically or on paper. The IRS says a missing or incorrect PIN can cause an e-filed return to be rejected or delay processing of a paper return.
The IP PIN applies to Forms 1040, 1040-NR, 1040-PR, 1040-SR, and 1040-SS. When completing a return, share it only with the IRS and a trusted tax professional or tax software provider. An IP PIN is an identity-verification credential; it does not replace other information required to file a return.
Take care to use the PIN for the correct calendar year and enter all six digits accurately. If an e-filed return is rejected because the PIN is missing or incorrect, retrieve the current number through your IRS online account or follow the recovery instructions rather than reusing a prior-year number. On a paper return, a missing or incorrect PIN can delay processing. The IRS says that if you cannot retrieve or obtain a PIN through the available recovery routes, you may mail the paper return without it; the return may then be subject to identity review, which can delay a refund.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The IRS warns: “The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN.” Treat an unsolicited request for it by phone, email, or text as a warning sign. Do not provide the PIN in response to that message or call. Enter it only as part of preparing or filing your return with the IRS or a trusted tax professional or tax software provider.

The distinction is important: you may need to provide the PIN to a trusted preparer or tax software provider when completing your return, but an unexpected caller, email, or text asking you to disclose it is not part of the normal filing process. Do not send the number in response to an unsolicited request. If you are unsure whether a request is legitimate, use the IRS account or official IRS tax filing process rather than the contact details or link in the message.

If the IRS has already assigned you a PIN, try retrieving the current one in your IRS online account. If you cannot access your account, contact the IRS and ask whether it can reissue the PIN by mail. After an IRS phone assistor verifies your identity, the IRS says a mailed PIN is sent within 21 days to the address on file.
A minor’s lost PIN cannot be retrieved online; call the IRS to ask for a mailed reissue. Do not use Form 15227 to recover any PIN that has already been assigned.
Mail reissue may not be available if you opted in for the first time in the current calendar year or make your request during the year-end maintenance period. If you cannot get the PIN online and mail reissue is unavailable, the IRS says to mail the paper return without it. Identity review can delay the refund.
The mailed reissue timeline is different from the time estimates for new enrollment: the IRS says a PIN requested by mail after an assistor verifies your identity is sent within 21 days to the address on file. This is still not a reason to file Form 15227 if you already have a PIN. If a minor needs a replacement, online retrieval is not available for that situation; call the IRS and ask about mailed reissue.
Also check whether the timing affects your options. The IRS says mail reissue may not be available for someone who opted in for the first time during the current calendar year or who makes the request during the year-end maintenance period. If you cannot access the account and mail reissue is unavailable, the IRS instructs taxpayers to mail a paper return without the PIN. Be prepared for identity review to delay the refund.

The IRS says, “The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN.” Treat an unsolicited request for it by phone, email, or text as a scam warning sign. Share it only as needed with the IRS or a trusted tax preparer or tax software provider completing your return.
