1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo publish an Android app in F-Droid’s official repository, prepare a public, suitably licensed source project, add its build and listing details to fdroiddata, validate the metadata and build, then open a merge request and respond to review. A merged entry is not yet a published app: F-Droid’s server must still build it and add it to the repository. This guide covers official inclusion; running your own F-Droid-compatible repository is a separate distribution route.
1. Check whether the app is suitable for the official repository
Start with F-Droid’s inclusion quick-start guide and inclusion policy. The source repository should be public, contain the current real source code, and include an appropriate free and open-source software (FOSS) license. Check the app’s dependencies, build tools, bundled resources, and services—not just the license label.

F-Droid’s quick-start guide specifically identifies Firebase and Google Mobile Services as examples it does not accept in the official repository. If an app can work without them, a separate flavor that excludes them may be an option. If you are submitting on behalf of someone else, notify the author and obtain their non-objection.
Recommended Free Tools
Review may consider license notices, binary blobs, non-free assets or dependencies, advertising, tracking, and reliance on services users cannot change or avoid. F-Droid may ask for changes, document AntiFeatures, determine how updates will be handled, and try to build the app in an isolated environment. An open-source label alone does not guarantee acceptance.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

2. Prepare tagged releases and app-listing material
Make sure each release you want F-Droid to build has a Git tag corresponding to its version. Prepare the app’s listing information upstream, using a supported metadata layout. F-Droid’s quick-start guide describes localized metadata that can include short and full descriptions, an icon, phone screenshots, and a changelog for a specific version.
- The short description must be under 80 characters and should not end with a period.
- The changelog may be up to 500 characters.
If the listing material is missing, ask the app team to add it to the upstream project. Keeping it with the app makes it easier for the team to maintain.
3. Create the fdroiddata metadata entry
The official repository’s app records live in fdroiddata. Fork that repository, create a submission branch, and add a YAML file at metadata/<application-id>.yml, using the app’s exact Android application ID in the filename. F-Droid’s quick-start guide suggests starting from a similar app or a template; fdroid import can generate a template.

The metadata identifies the app, its public source location, and how a particular version is built. Consult F-Droid’s build metadata reference for the supported fields. A Git Repo must be an unauthenticated public HTTPS URL, and a build block’s commit must be a full commit hash—not a branch name or tag.
Set up a build block for the project’s toolchain
A build block ties a version name and version code to a source revision and its build settings. For a Gradle project, specify the needed module or subdirectory and the appropriate flavor or task. The cited quick-start instructions principally describe Gradle projects; apps built with other toolchains need explicit build instructions and an output path that lets fdroidserver find the APK. Do not assume one set of commands fits every Android project.
4. Configure update detection and make an informed signing choice
When the version name and version code are in standard Gradle or manifest locations, F-Droid may detect new versions without extra extraction settings. If the project stores version information elsewhere, configure the metadata’s update-check fields to match its release scheme. The quick-start guide recommends automatic update checks unless there is a reason to manage updates manually.

Reproducible builds are recommended, not mandatory
F-Droid states in its quick-start guide: “Reproducible builds are not a requirement for apps being on F-Droid. But we do consider their use best practice.” Reproducibility lets F-Droid compare a binary with the build produced from source and the build recipe.
F-Droid documents options involving developer-signed binaries or F-Droid-signed builds. If metadata is configured to use upstream developer-signed binaries, F-Droid verifies them against the build recipe; when verification does not match, that version is skipped rather than published. Discuss the signing plan early: Android signing-key constraints can make a later change disruptive for existing users. See F-Droid’s reproducible builds documentation for the relevant process.
5. Validate the metadata and build before submission
Use fdroidserver as appropriate for your development environment. The quick-start guide names these checks:

- Run
fdroid lint <appid>to identify metadata issues. - Run
fdroid rewritemeta <appid>to format the metadata. - Build the app using the metadata and inspect the logs for errors.
You can also push the branch to your fork so its CI can validate the metadata. Fix failures and review the resulting logs before asking maintainers to review the submission. These checks do not replace F-Droid’s own review and build.
The quick-start guide gives a historical setup estimate of 2 GB of network traffic and 5 GB of disk space for a laptop running Ubuntu 21.10 in February 2022. Those dated figures describe that example environment, not current universal hardware requirements.

Watch the merge request thread and answer packager questions. Reviewers assess both the software’s freedom and whether the documented build works; they may request fixes to metadata, source, dependencies, or build instructions. Acceptance into fdroiddata is an important review milestone, but it is not the same as the app appearing in the F-Droid client.
7. Track the server build and repository publication
After metadata is accepted, F-Droid’s build server fetches the source and required components, builds the app, and publishes it to the official repository if the process succeeds. Check the app’s page and build log, and consult the F-Droid monitor for current or recent failures.
F-Droid’s quick-start guide gives an approximate 24–48-hour interval from metadata merge to repository appearance when there are no build problems. It is not a guaranteed deadline: build cycles are unscheduled and apps are processed in batches. The website listing may also lag behind repository availability while pages are generated.

When a self-hosted repository makes more sense
If you want to distribute APKs without seeking inclusion in F-Droid.org’s official collection, F-Droid documents how to run a separate repository. Its repository setup guide describes placing APKs in a repository directory, running fdroid update --create-metadata, and serving the generated contents over the web. That route puts repository hosting and operation in your hands; it is not an alternate way to receive official approval.
The guide’s quick test configuration is not a secure production setup. A public repository needs the stronger setup described in F-Droid’s security guidance.
