For U.S. federal tax updates, subscribe through the IRS News Bulletins page. Choose IRS Guidewire for alerts when advance copies of IRS guidance are issued, or e-News for Tax Professionals for a weekly professional roundup that includes tax law changes and technical guidance. The IRS also offers email and opt-in text updates. State and local tax changes require alerts from the relevant jurisdiction’s tax authority.
Choose the IRS alert that fits what you need
Start at the IRS News Bulletins subscription page. Its options serve different purposes:

| Alert | Best for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| IRS Guidewire | Readers who want targeted notices about official IRS guidance | Notifications when advance copies of guidance are issued, including notices, revenue rulings, revenue procedures, and regulations. |
| e-News for Tax Professionals | Tax professionals who want a recurring summary | A weekly roundup that includes tax law changes, technical guidance, disaster relief, continuing education credits, IRS initiatives, and scam alerts. |
| Other IRS News Bulletin updates | Readers who want broader IRS news | Available topics and delivery choices are shown on the subscription page; some updates are available by email or opt-in text. |
These subscriptions provide federal IRS information. They do not establish that state or local tax rules are covered.
How to subscribe to federal tax updates
- Open the IRS News Bulletins page.
- Review the available topics and select IRS Guidewire for advance guidance notifications, or e-News for Tax Professionals for the weekly roundup.
- Choose email or text delivery if the selected update offers that option, then complete the sign-up and any confirmation steps shown by the IRS.
- For text updates, opt in to the specific IRS text service. IRS News Bulletin texts use short code 91040; the IRS describes text topics including tax law updates and general IRS news. See its text-message guidance.
Get state and local tax alerts separately
Federal IRS subscriptions are not a complete alert system for state or local tax-code changes. Identify the jurisdictions that matter to you—such as your state of residence, business locations, or local taxing authority—and check each revenue department or tax authority for its own email or text subscriptions. The availability and scope of those services vary by jurisdiction; the IRS pages do not provide a comprehensive directory.
Protect yourself from fake tax-update messages
A message that appears to be an IRS alert is not automatically genuine. The IRS says, “The IRS will never initiate contact with you by email.” Treat unexpected IRS-branded emails and texts cautiously, and do not click suspicious links or provide personal or financial information in response.
- To check whether an update is real, navigate to IRS.gov yourself and locate the relevant notice or subscription page rather than following a link in an unexpected message.
- Report suspicious IRS-, Treasury-, or tax-related email through the IRS reporting guidance. For email-contact safety details, see IRS privacy guidance about email contact.
