How to Get Alerts When a Website Returns an Error

Configure an HTTP(S) monitor and route alerts to the right person. Add content or browser checks when a responding URL may still be broken for visitors.

Set up an HTTP(S) uptime monitor for the URL that matters, choose how often it should be checked, and route alerts to the person who can respond. For a page that depends on JavaScript or user interaction—such as checkout or login—add a browser-based transaction monitor: a basic uptime check may confirm that a URL responds without verifying the full visitor experience.

Choose what to monitor

Monitor the URL whose failure would matter to users or your team. Depending on the site, that may be the homepage, login page, checkout endpoint, or an API endpoint. A service can return a successful HTTP response while still showing an empty page or missing content, so choose checks that match the failure you need to detect.

  • HTTP(S) check: Periodically requests a URL and can mark it down when it does not respond or returns an error status code. See UptimeRobot’s HTTP monitor setup guide.
  • Content or keyword check: Looks for expected text, or for text that should no longer be present. UptimeRobot describes keyword monitoring for both cases on its monitor overview.
  • Browser transaction check: Exercises a flow that relies on rendered content or interaction, such as submitting a form or moving through checkout. Better Stack describes Playwright transaction monitoring in Chrome at its uptime monitoring page.

These checks answer different questions. An HTTP check tests whether a URL responds under its configured conditions; it does not necessarily establish that a visitor can use the page.

Set up an HTTP(S) alert

  1. Pick the exact URL. Use the public page or endpoint that represents the failure you care about. If a site has separate critical paths, create a monitor for each relevant URL rather than assuming that a homepage check covers them all.
  2. Create an HTTP(S) monitor. In the monitoring service, add the URL and choose a check interval. Where supported, select monitoring regions and define criteria such as the expected status or required page content. UptimeRobot’s quick setup guide describes creating an HTTP monitor that periodically requests the specified URL.
  3. Choose notification recipients and channels. Route alerts to the responsible person or team through a channel they actually monitor. Available options depend on the service: UptimeRobot lists email, SMS, voice calls, and integrations on its website monitoring page; Google Cloud documents notification channels including email, Slack, PagerDuty, and Pub/Sub in its uptime monitoring quickstart.
  4. Set noise controls if available. A notification delay or repeat policy can help avoid a flood of alerts for transient failures while still escalating an ongoing problem. UptimeRobot documents notification delays and repetition in its setup guide, and recurring notifications and maintenance windows on its service page.
  5. Check that the route reaches the right owner. Confirm that the configured recipient and channel are appropriate for the service being monitored, then keep them current as on-call responsibilities change.

Know what a basic uptime check does not test

A successful HTTP response is not the same as a working visitor journey. Google Cloud states that its public uptime checks do not load page assets or run JavaScript, and that authentication is not included in the default configuration. See the Google Cloud public uptime checks documentation. That makes a public check useful for a publicly accessible URL, but not a substitute for testing browser behavior or an authenticated workflow.

If the failure could be a page that responds but is blank or missing an important message, consider a content check for expected text. If the critical path needs scripts, clicks, or form submissions to work, add a browser-based transaction check. Better Stack describes Playwright checks running in Chrome on its uptime page; compare providers’ supported journeys, diagnostics, alert channels, and limits for your needs.

Choose the monitoring approach that fits

Approach Good fit Key limits or considerations
Hosted external HTTP(S) monitor A public website, API endpoint, or small site needing independent checks and quick setup. Compare intervals, locations, status and content criteria, notification channels, delay and repeat behavior, and team features. Offerings can change. UptimeRobot documents HTTP monitoring and alert options at its website monitoring page and setup guide.
Cloud-native uptime check A service already administered in a cloud platform, when the team wants checks and alerts in its existing monitoring setup. Google Cloud public checks test publicly accessible URLs using HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP and can be attached to an alerting policy. They do not load assets or run JavaScript; default configuration does not include authentication. See the documentation and the quickstart.
Browser-based transaction monitor Login, checkout, forms, and other important flows whose health depends on rendered content and interaction. Check supported journeys, diagnostics, alert channels, and cost or usage limits directly with the provider. Better Stack describes Playwright checks running in Chrome at its uptime monitoring page.

Or skip the browser setup

If you also need clean screenshots of pages—for monitoring evidence, debugging, or an automated workflow—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; it is not a replacement for configuring an uptime alert or browser transaction monitor.
