How to Get Administrator Access Back on Windows or Mac

A password reset does not restore administrator status. Identify the issue, use the authorized Windows or Mac recovery route, and protect data before a reset or erase.

If you can sign in but your account is a standard user, you need an authorized administrator to change its account type. If you cannot sign in, recover the password first; that alone does not make the account an administrator. On a work, school, or otherwise managed computer, contact the organization’s IT administrator or the person who set it up rather than trying to bypass its controls.

How do I get administrator access back?

First identify which problem you have. A forgotten password is a sign-in problem; being unable to install software or change system settings can mean you are signed in as a standard user. A computer managed by an employer, school, family organizer, or another owner adds a separate authorization issue.

  • You cannot sign in: use the password recovery route for your account and operating system.
  • You can sign in, but lack admin rights: ask another authorized administrator to change your account type.
  • The device is managed or belongs to someone else: contact the organization or person responsible for it.

Changing a password does not, by itself, change whether an account is an administrator. The steps below cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, and macOS.

How do I make my account an administrator?

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Another administrator must sign in and authorize the change. Microsoft’s account-management guidance covers Windows 10 and 11; Settings wording can vary by release. Microsoft: Manage user accounts in Windows.

  1. Sign in to the administrator account.
  2. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  3. Select the account that needs access, choose Change account type, select Administrator, and confirm.

If you do not have access to an administrator account, this Settings route cannot authorize itself. Microsoft cautions: “you should limit the number of administrators on your Windows device because administrators have complete control over the system.”

macOS

If you can sign in to another administrator account, use it to change the login password for the affected user in System Settings > Users & Groups. Apple’s documented route is for changing the password; if the account is not an administrator, ask an authorized administrator to change its account type rather than treating a password change as a permissions fix. See Apple: If you forgot your Mac login password and Apple: Change Users & Groups settings.

I forgot my administrator password

Windows local account

At the Windows sign-in screen, select the password reset option and answer the security questions configured for that local account. If you created a password reset disk beforehand, you can use it instead. A reset disk is a preventive aid for a local account, not a general tool for repairing permissions; it does not apply to Microsoft accounts. Microsoft: Create a password reset disk for a local account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you can sign in to a separate administrator account, Microsoft also documents changing a local user’s password through Computer Management. If no administrator account is available to change the password, Microsoft says the Windows device needs to be reset. Password recovery restores sign-in, not administrator membership. See Microsoft: Reset your Windows local account password.

Mac login password

At the login window, enter the password up to three times where applicable and look for a password-reset message. Follow the on-screen options. If they do not work, Apple describes using macOS Recovery and its password-reset utility. Depending on the Mac’s setup, you may be asked for the Apple Account previously used with it or the FileVault recovery key.

Apple’s current instructions also say that on macOS Tahoe 26 or later, a FileVault recovery key might be available in the Passwords app on another device signed in to the same Apple Account, if iCloud Passwords & Keychain is enabled. Recovery screens and available options depend on the macOS version and configuration, so follow Apple’s live instructions for your Mac: Apple: If you forgot your Mac login password.

I can’t install software because I don’t have admin rights

Being able to use the computer does not mean your account is authorized to install software or change protected settings. On a personally owned Windows PC, ask an administrator account holder to change your account type if you should have that authority. On a Mac, ask an administrator to review the account’s role. If the computer is managed, the organization may intentionally restrict installs; request approval or installation from its IT administrator.

Do not use third-party “admin unlock” utilities, undocumented account-bypass methods, or commands that alter permissions without understanding their effect. On macOS, Apple says only administrator users can use sudo, advises against routine root login, and warns that root-level changes can make a Mac stop working. Apple: Change the default shell in Terminal.

What if the computer belongs to work, school, or someone else?

Contact the organization’s IT administrator or the person who set up the computer. Work or school account connections and device-management profiles can reflect policies that only the organization can change; local recovery steps do not authorize you to override them. Microsoft describes work or school account connections in its Windows account guidance, and Apple directs users who do not know a Mac administrator’s credentials to the person who set it up. See Microsoft: Manage user accounts in Windows and Apple: Change Users & Groups settings.

Before resetting or erasing the device

Back up important files where possible and check that you have the recovery credentials you may need. Microsoft warns that some Windows recovery options can cause data loss and recommends starting with the least disruptive option that fits the problem. Some Windows Recovery Environment options may require the BitLocker recovery key. Read the current option descriptions before choosing Reset this PC; do not assume it will preserve all apps, settings, or data. Microsoft: Recovery options in Windows.

On a Mac, erasing is a last resort: Apple says it permanently removes user accounts and data. You may then need to reinstall macOS and activate the Mac. Check backups and recovery credentials before proceeding, and use Apple’s instructions for the specific Mac and macOS version: Apple: If you forgot your Mac login password.

Prevent the same lockout next time

Windows local-account reset disk

If you use a Windows local account, you can create a password reset disk in advance on a USB flash drive. It only helps in the relevant local-account password scenario and must exist before you forget the password; it does not change account type. Microsoft’s instructions specify the USB medium but do not establish a required capacity, brand, or model. Create a password reset disk for a local account.

Keep administrator access controlled

Maintain access to an authorized administrator account and keep important files backed up. Use administrator privileges only when needed: administrators can make consequential changes to Windows, and Apple discourages routine root use on a Mac.
