If a search field appears in the transcript panel, enter a word or phrase to find it. Search is available on some videos, not all.

YouTube documents this description-based method for videos that have captions. The exact placement of controls can vary as YouTube updates its interfaces, particularly on mobile, so look in the expanded description rather than relying on one universal sequence of taps.
Why “Show transcript” may be missing
YouTube’s built-in transcript depends on captions being available for the video. Captions may have been supplied by the creator or generated automatically with speech recognition, but automatic captions are not available for every video. If you do not see Show transcript, check whether captions are available in the player; there is no universal fix established for every device, account, or interface state.

If no caption track is available and you still need text, a separate transcription service may be an option. Before using one, check which video sources it supports, what file formats it can export, its privacy terms, and its current cost. A vendor guide describes downloading transcripts and generating them for videos without captions, but that is a vendor’s description of its service category, not independent proof that any particular service works for every video.
Can you download the transcript?
YouTube’s built-in transcript panel is useful for reading along and navigating to a point in the video. The official viewer instructions do not establish a general download or export option. If you need a transcript file, check the current capabilities and terms of any third-party service you consider rather than assuming the built-in panel can export one.

How creators can add captions to their own videos
If you manage the video, YouTube Studio provides creator-side ways to add subtitles and captions. These tools affect your own video; they do not let a viewer add captions to someone else’s upload.

For auto-sync, use text in the language spoken in the video and a language supported by YouTube’s speech-recognition technology. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio quality.

Review the captions and publish them when ready. Automatic captions, when available, are in the video’s default language.

What transcripts help you do—and how to check them
YouTube describes transcripts as a way to read along and find specific parts of a video. Selecting a line takes you to that point; transcripts may also help you find chapters where available and identify people, places, and affiliate products mentioned in the video.
Automatic captions are produced using speech recognition. YouTube’s help material does not publish a general accuracy percentage. For names, numbers, quotations, instructions, or other consequential wording, play the relevant segment and check the transcript against the audio instead of treating the text as a verified record.
