Surfshark offers a 7-day VPN trial, but it isn’t a no-payment download. You have to pick a 12- or 24-month plan on Surfshark’s website and enter an accepted payment method. Surfshark charges you when the seven days end unless you’ve turned off auto-renewal first. Surfshark’s support page, “Does Surfshark offer a free trial?” (updated September 11, 2026), says: “Surfshark offers a 7-day VPN free trial to test the waters.”
What the trial actually is
- Length: 7 days.
- Who qualifies: new users, according to Surfshark’s support article.
- Which plans: only the 12-month and 24-month plans, bought through Surfshark’s own website. The trial doesn’t apply to shorter terms.
- Payment: required up front. Surfshark’s instructions list PayPal, Apple Pay and credit card.
- Devices: up to 3 during the trial, as stated on the support page.
- After day 7: the subscription is charged unless auto-renewal is disabled.
Availability can change, so check that the offer shows for your account and region when you reach the page.

How to start the trial, step by step
- Open Surfshark’s official website. Go to its trial or pricing page, not a third-party reseller. The trial is described only for purchases made directly through Surfshark.
- Confirm the offer is shown to you. It’s aimed at new users, so an email address that already has a Surfshark account may not qualify.
- Choose a 12- or 24-month plan. Read the billing total and renewal terms at checkout. Introductory prices depend on the promotion and the billing term, and they change, so use the figures shown at checkout rather than any quoted elsewhere.
- Create an account or sign in, then add a payment method. Use PayPal, Apple Pay or a credit card.
- Install the app. Download it from Surfshark’s website or the official app store for your device, sign in, and connect. Keep to 3 devices during the trial.
- Turn off auto-renewal right away if you only want to test it. Do this in your Surfshark account settings. Setting it on day one, instead of leaving it for day seven, means you can’t forget. Check that the account then shows the subscription won’t renew.
How to avoid being charged
Surfshark says the payment is taken once the trial ends and that disabling auto-renewal stops future payments. The support article is also titled around “How to cancel my free VPN trial?”, which confirms the cancellation route is the account’s renewal setting. Do it before the seventh day ends, and keep any confirmation Surfshark shows or emails you.

Trial versus the 30-day money-back guarantee
These are two separate policies. Surfshark’s support page says: “Once the trial ends, your payment is charged, and you can still request a full refund within 30 days.” Its Terms of Service set limits on that refund.

|---|---|---|
| When you pay | Payment details are entered at signup; the charge happens after seven days | You pay at purchase, then request a refund |
| Window | 7 days | 30 days |
| Eligibility | New users on 12- or 24-month plans bought on Surfshark’s website | Initial purchase only; recurring payments are not refundable under the guarantee |
| Purchase route | Surfshark’s website | Surfshark can’t issue refunds for some reseller purchases; the terms name Paddle, Google Play and Cleverbridge as exceptions to its reseller restriction |
The practical consequence is that a renewal payment you failed to stop is not covered by the guarantee. Cancel auto-renewal during the trial; don’t count on a refund afterwards.
