Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo use a controller in Minecraft Java Edition, install a controller-support mod that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader, or use a keyboard-and-mouse mapping workaround such as Steam Input. Java Edition does not generally provide native gamepad controls and menus, so plugging in a controller alone is not enough. The right setup depends on your controller, operating system, launcher, and Minecraft profile.
Choose a setup: controller mod or input mapping
A controller mod adds gamepad-aware controls inside Minecraft. A remapper translates controller buttons into keyboard and mouse input, which can be simpler but does not necessarily provide controller-specific menus, button prompts, or text-entry support.

| Option | What it does | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controlify | Adds controller support and settings within Minecraft. | Players who want controller-aware gameplay and interface options. | Choose the release for the exact Minecraft version and loader; device behavior varies by operating system, connection, and driver. Controlify project page and support documentation. |
| MidnightControls | Adds controller controls and configurable mappings. | Players whose Minecraft version and loader are supported by its current release. | Some mappings may need configuration; Steam Controller and Steam Deck support are marked work in progress in its README. MidnightControls project. |
| Steam Input mapping | Maps controller input to keyboard and mouse actions. | Players who want a workaround without adding a controller mod. | Launcher compatibility is not universal, and it does not automatically add a controller-oriented Minecraft interface. Minecraft Wiki controller tutorial. |
If you need to navigate menus or enter text without touching a keyboard, check those functions specifically before choosing. Controlify describes GUI navigation and an on-screen keyboard on its project page; a basic key-and-mouse mapping may only cover movement and common actions.
Install a controller-support mod
1. Check your Minecraft profile
Find the exact Minecraft Java Edition version used by the profile or modpack you intend to play. Mods are version-specific; do not assume a file for one release works with another.
#1 Best Overall
- Collectible figurine inside the grip and a multi-layered design featuring iconic game scenes
- Built-in, rechargeable battery and a 30-foot wireless range
- Expertly designed for all-day comfort and long-lasting performance
- Brighten your gameplay with LED lighting effects that you can change using the ABXY buttons
- Officially licensed by Nintendo and Mojang Studios
2. Match the mod and loader
Choose a mod build that explicitly supports both your Minecraft version and mod loader. Controlify’s project listings distinguish releases for loaders such as Fabric and NeoForge, so one JAR should not be treated as universal. Review the release page for required dependencies and install the matching loader before adding the mod.
3. Add the mod to the right instance
- Download the compiled release file from the mod’s official project page or a trusted project listing. Do not treat a source-code archive as the installable release.
- Place the JAR and any required dependency JARs in the
modsfolder for the Minecraft instance you will launch. Modpack and launcher instances may use separate folders, so confirm the folder belongs to the selected profile. - Start that profile and check that Minecraft loads the mod. If the game fails to launch, verify the Minecraft version, loader, and dependencies before removing or changing unrelated files.
4. Connect and configure the controller
Connect the controller in the mode you plan to use, such as USB or Bluetooth, then launch the modded profile. Open the mod’s settings and select or identify the controller if the interface offers that choice. Review button bindings and adjust sensitivity or dead zones if available.

What to know about controller compatibility
Controlify
Controlify uses SDL3 to communicate with most controllers. Its documentation says SDL3-supported devices will usually expose standard inputs, but this is not guaranteed. Controller mode, wired or Bluetooth connection, operating system, and driver can affect results. The support page includes tested combinations, including XInput-compatible controllers on Windows and DualSense configurations across Windows, Linux, and macOS; features can differ between wired and Bluetooth use. A controller absent from its table is not automatically unsupported. Check Controlify’s current support table.

MidnightControls
Its README lists DualShock, DualSense, Xbox, Switch Pro controllers, Joy-Cons, and Steam hardware. It labels Steam Controller and Steam Deck support as work in progress, so do not assume full support for those devices. See the project README.
Use Steam Input as a workaround
A community tutorial describes using Steam as middleware, applying a “Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse” controller layout, and launching Minecraft through Steam. Treat this as a route to investigate rather than a guaranteed fix: compatibility can vary with the launcher and installation, and the tutorial notes limitations for the Microsoft Store launcher. Follow current Steam instructions for adding and launching a non-Steam game, then verify that Minecraft receives the mapped keyboard and mouse input. Minecraft Wiki controller tutorial.

Troubleshoot recognition and controls
- The controller does not appear: First check whether your operating system recognizes it while connected in the intended mode. Then verify the mod’s current support information for that device, OS, connection, and driver.
- The controller appears but buttons are wrong: Review the mod’s binding settings. If the device has no known mapping, consult its documentation for custom mapping; MidnightControls documents this process in its wiki.
- Controls move twice or behave unpredictably: As a troubleshooting hypothesis, check whether another remapper or input tool is also sending controls. Disable one mapping layer temporarily and test again.
- The modded profile will not start: Recheck that the mod, loader, Minecraft version, and dependencies all match the selected instance. Test the profile without recently added mods if you need to isolate a conflict.
- Movement works but menus or text entry do not: Check whether the chosen mod supports GUI navigation and an on-screen keyboard, or keep a keyboard available. A keyboard-and-mouse remapper does not by itself guarantee controller-friendly menus.
Support limits for modded Minecraft
Modded behavior is community-supported rather than covered by official Minecraft troubleshooting. Minecraft Support states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” Minecraft Support: Minecraft Mods.
