To get a Canadian IP address, connect to a VPN server in Canada: choose a service and plan that includes Canadian access, install its app, select a Canadian server, and connect. Then check the apparent country with an IP-location service. This changes the address websites see to the VPN endpoint’s address; it does not make you anonymous, and a Canadian connection does not guarantee access to Canadian streaming content.
How to get a Canadian IP address
- Choose a VPN plan with Canadian server access. Confirm that the specific plan includes Canada and supports the device you want to use.
- Install the VPN app and sign in. Download it from the provider and follow its setup steps.
- Select a Canadian server or city and connect. The available locations and city choices vary by provider and plan.
- Check the apparent location. Use an IP-location checker after connecting. If you are checking the location Netflix sees, Netflix recommends visiting fast.com, selecting “Show more info,” and checking the “Client” country field.
Location databases can disagree, and the city they report may not precisely identify the server’s physical location. If a service still sees another country, disconnect and reconnect to a different Canadian endpoint, then check again.

Free VPNs and Canadian endpoints
A free VPN and a free Canadian server are not the same thing. Proton VPN’s Canada page advertises a free option for Proton services and describes Canadian servers, but it does not establish that Canadian endpoints are included on the free VPN tier. Check the provider’s current plan details for Canadian access, device support, and any limits before relying on a free plan: Proton VPN’s Canada server information.

What to compare before choosing a VPN
Provider pages describe Canadian server options, but they are not a like-for-like independent performance or privacy test. Compare the details that matter for your use:
- Canadian access on your plan: Verify that the particular tier includes servers in Canada.
- Location selection: Check which cities are selectable if a particular Canadian location matters to you.
- Device and app support: Make sure the provider supports your phone, computer, browser, or other device.
- Privacy information: Read the privacy policy, logging disclosures, and any published audit evidence. A VPN moves trust from your network provider to the VPN provider; it does not remove the need to consider who handles your traffic.
- Your actual use case: Network conditions affect performance. No comparative speed testing is established here, so provider server claims are not a basis for promising a particular speed.
- Current terms: Check price, refund terms, and any extra charge for a dedicated IP directly with the provider.
For reference, NordVPN and Private Internet Access document Canadian server selection on their own sites. PIA also describes dedicated Canadian IP options. These are provider-reported features; availability and terms may change.

Will a Canadian VPN server unlock Canadian streaming?
Not necessarily. Netflix says that when viewers use a VPN, they may see only titles for which it has worldwide licensing, and they may need to turn off the VPN to see titles available in their region. Netflix also says VPNs cannot be used for live events or its ad-supported experience. A Canadian IP address therefore does not guarantee a particular catalogue or that a streaming service will accept the connection. See Netflix’s guidance on watching through a VPN.
If Netflix reports VPN or proxy use, check its troubleshooting guidance and your provider’s instructions. Whether to disconnect depends on the service and content you want to access.

What a VPN does—and what it does not
A VPN routes traffic through the VPN provider’s network, so a site may see the provider endpoint’s IP address instead of the address assigned to your connection. That can change the apparent country, but it does not make you universally anonymous. Your VPN provider becomes a party you need to trust, and VPN protection depends on correct configuration and consistent use.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s general VPN guidance, ITSAP.80.101, says: “It is recommended that IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) be used for VPN (virtual private network) access as a primary consideration.” The guidance addresses VPN deployments broadly; it is not an endorsement of a particular consumer VPN.
