A homepage URL is not an image URL: putting it directly into IMAGE will not make Sheets browse and screenshot the page.
1. Set up the school list
Create columns for the school name, its canonical public website URL, and the thumbnail. For example, put the website URL in column B and reserve column C for the image. Start with a few schools to confirm the URLs and captures are useful before processing a larger list.

Use the school’s public website address rather than a search-results link. A site may redirect, block automated requests, or fail to load in a particular capture method, so check each result rather than assuming all school websites will render alike.

2. Capture each website as an image
Google Sheets displays images; it does not render a live webpage into a screenshot. Create a screenshot separately, either by capturing a small number of pages manually in a browser or by using a screenshot-rendering service for repeated work. The screenshot must be available as an image that the sheet can access. Google’s documentation describes adding images and using IMAGE, while services offer separate page-rendering workflows (Google Sheets image help).

A service is optional. Before choosing one, check its current capture limits, image formats, viewport controls, authentication options, privacy and retention terms, price, and compatibility with your intended Sheets workflow. Vendor integrations and instructions can change; do not assume that a formula or API request for one provider works with another.
3. Display a hosted screenshot with IMAGE
If the screenshot is at a direct image URL that Sheets can access, enter this formula in C2, assuming the image URL is in that cell’s referenced location:

Here, D2 contains the screenshot image URL. Keep the original school page URL in its own column; do not use it as the argument to IMAGE. Google documents four sizing modes:

- 2: stretch the image to fill the cell.
- 3: display the image at its original size.
- 4: specify custom height and width in pixels.
For a thumbnail, mode 1 is a sensible starting point. Adjust the column width and row height so the preview is visible at a useful scale. If you use mode 4, provide the height and width arguments as specified in Google’s IMAGE documentation.

4. Insert images with Apps Script
Apps Script is an alternative when you want to place image content in a scripted workflow. Google documents insertImage(url, column, row) for a publicly accessible image URL, and image-blob insertion for image bytes. Neither method turns a school homepage into a screenshot; you must first have the image. The documented blob insertion method supports blobs up to 2 MB. See Google’s Spreadsheet reference and Sheet reference for methods, parameters, and authorization requirements.
For a public image URL, the documented pattern is:
sheet.insertImage(imageUrl, column, row);
Use the actual Apps Script Sheet object and valid one-based column and row numbers in your script. If the image is not publicly accessible, use an appropriate image blob instead, subject to the documented size limit. Keep API credentials out of visible cells; follow the selected provider’s current guidance for secret storage and authorization.

5. Choose the workflow that fits

6. Troubleshoot missing or poor thumbnails
- The cell shows an error or no image: confirm the referenced value is a direct image URL, not the school homepage or a page that contains an image. Check whether the image can be accessed by Sheets.
- The formula points to a valid screenshot but it does not load: check the URL for typos, access restrictions, expiration, or provider-specific authentication requirements. Follow the provider’s current instructions; an authenticated API may need an intermediary rather than a direct formula.
- The picture is too large, small, or distorted: use the appropriate
IMAGEsizing mode and resize the sheet’s row and column. Mode 2 stretches to fill and can change the image’s proportions. - A capture is blank or incomplete: check whether the school site loads in a normal browser and whether the chosen capture method can reach it. The page may take time to render, require interaction, redirect, or restrict automated access.
- Apps Script rejects the image URL: confirm that it is a publicly accessible image URL. If using a blob, check the documented 2 MB maximum for that insertion method.
- A vendor-specific formula or script fails: check the provider’s current documentation for its authentication, response format, quotas, and integration steps. A formula advertised by one service is not a universal Sheets feature.
