To show a thumbnail of a blogroll destination, capture the destination URL as an image with a screenshot service, use a WordPress links-gallery plugin that generates screenshots, or display the destination’s Open Graph preview image if it has one. WordPress’s Site Icon is a small identity mark, and a featured image is an image attached to your own WordPress content; neither automatically captures a remote website.
Choose the kind of thumbnail you need
First decide whether the blogroll should show what a destination page looks like or simply identify the site. A screenshot shows page content and layout; a Site Icon or favicon is a compact logo-like mark. A link card using Open Graph metadata can show an image chosen by the destination, but it is not necessarily a screenshot.

Generate thumbnails with a screenshot service
For an actual website screenshot thumbnail, a service captures the remote URL and returns an image that your WordPress page can display. Its README describes using the Urlbox API to generate URL screenshots and display them with a shortcode. The documented prerequisites are WordPress, a Urlbox account, and an API key and secret. The example shortcode is [urlbox url=urlbox.com thumb_width=600]; the README also documents a full_page=true option. Check the plugin’s current compatibility and the service’s current account terms before relying on it.
Plan how the image will appear
- Choose whether a thumbnail should show the visible viewport or the full page. A full-page capture can be much taller than a blogroll card, so consider how your theme crops or scales images.
- Decide whether the screenshot is refreshed manually, on a schedule, or only when you update a link. The documented WP Links Page gallery, for example, describes scheduled or on-demand screenshot updates.
- Decide where the image is served from. A link-card plugin may load a destination’s preview media remotely; a capture workflow may instead produce an image for your site to display. The details depend on the plugin and service.
- Check how the thumbnail behaves at the sizes your theme uses, including on narrow screens. A screenshot can include small text that becomes unreadable when reduced.
Use a links-gallery plugin
If you want WordPress to manage a set of external links as a gallery, WP Links Page describes a dynamic links gallery that automatically creates screenshots. Its listing describes grid and list layouts, titles and descriptions, scheduled or on-demand screenshot updates, and shortcode output. This route may suit a blogroll that needs more than a row of manually selected links. Verify the plugin’s current maintenance and compatibility before installing; the feature description alone does not establish how it will behave with your theme or current WordPress setup.

Use the destination’s Open Graph image
If a linked site already provides an Open Graph image, a link-card plugin can use that image instead of generating a screenshot. Simple Link Embed describes fetching metadata for a selected URL and using its Open Graph image and favicon when available. Its description also says preview media may load from the linked destination when a card is shown.
This is a simpler option when a destination supplies a suitable image and you are comfortable depending on that external page’s metadata and availability. It does not guarantee a current view of the page: the destination chooses its preview image, and may change or remove it.

Use a WordPress image or Site Icon only for the job it does
Featured images for manually chosen artwork
If you want complete control over each blogroll image, attach or select an image in WordPress and use it for the corresponding link entry. WordPress’s theme functions can output an attached post thumbnail at a registered image size. The developer documentation notes that the_post_thumbnail() uses the post-thumbnail size by default when the theme has registered post-thumbnail support. This is a way to display an image you chose, not to capture the remote page.
Site Icons for site identity
A Site Icon is intended to identify a site in places such as browser tabs and bookmarks. WordPress says it should be square and at least 512 by 512 pixels. It can work as a compact mark alongside a blogroll link, but it does not show the appearance of the destination’s page.

Check the result in your blogroll
- Open the published page containing the blogroll and confirm that each link points to the intended destination.
- Check that screenshots or preview images load, and inspect their crop and dimensions in the layout visitors actually use.
- For a screenshot workflow, confirm that the image reflects the intended page state rather than a consent dialog, popup or transient loading screen. If the result is blank or blocked, investigate the capture or destination before publishing it as a preview.
- For a metadata-based card, check that the destination actually supplies an appropriate Open Graph image and that the remote image remains available.
- Recheck after changing themes or plugins; shortcode output and image presentation depend on the implementation you chose.
Common problems and fixes
- The thumbnail is a logo, not a page view: the selected feature may be using a Site Icon or favicon. Use a screenshot workflow if the goal is to show page appearance.
- No Open Graph thumbnail appears: the destination may not provide an Open Graph image, or its metadata may be unavailable. Use a screenshot capture or a manually selected WordPress image instead.
- The screenshot shortcode does not render: confirm that the plugin is installed and configured with the required account credentials, and check the shortcode spelling and supported options in its current documentation.
- The plugin conflicts with the site: check its current WordPress and theme compatibility and maintenance status before adoption. If it is not suitable, consider a service-based capture, a metadata card, or a manually chosen image.
- The thumbnail looks poor at card size: inspect the crop and rendered dimensions; a full-page image may be difficult to read when reduced. Use a more appropriate capture or a deliberately chosen image.
- A remote preview disappears or changes: metadata-based media depends on the destination. Switch to an image hosted or managed through your own WordPress workflow if you need control over the displayed artwork.
