Generate each thumbnail by rendering the restaurant’s website in a browser and capturing the same card-sized viewport or a useful page element. For a directory, standardize the image dimensions and format, wait for JavaScript-heavy pages to finish rendering, and keep a fallback for sites that fail to load. A screenshot is a preview of the website—not a map or a restaurant’s food photography.
Choose what the directory card should show
First decide whether the card needs a preview of the restaurant’s website or location context. A website screenshot shows the page as a visitor sees it; a static map image serves a different purpose. Apple’s Maps Web Snapshots, for example, are signed-URL map imagery, not website captures.

For website previews, choose a consistent width, height, aspect ratio and file type. Use the initial viewport when you want to show the page’s overall design. If a useful section is consistently identifiable, capture a particular element instead. A uniform output contract makes cards easier to scan, even though each restaurant’s site may have a different layout.
Choose a capture workflow
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot API or one-shot browser action | Send a URL and receive an image without managing browser processes. | Check dimensions and formats, render-completion controls, throughput limits, pricing, retention, error handling and permitted use. |
| Scripted browser automation or browser session | Sites that need navigation, interaction, custom waits or per-site handling. | Offers more control over navigation and selectors, but adds operational complexity; assess session reuse, concurrency, reliability and cost. |
| Static map snapshot | A location or map card rather than a website preview. | Check geographic coverage, styling, signing or credentials, usage terms and whether a map suits the card. |
Cloudflare Browser Run documents both stateless Quick Actions for individual tasks and browser sessions for direct control with tools such as Puppeteer, Playwright, CDP or Stagehand. Its screenshot endpoint accepts a URL or custom HTML. Webshrinker also documents a browser-rendered screenshot API; the available information here does not establish comparative quality or reliability for either service.

Generate thumbnails with a hosted screenshot endpoint
A hosted endpoint is a straightforward option when the input is a restaurant URL and the desired output is an image. Cloudflare says its /screenshot endpoint processes HTML and JavaScript before capture. Its documentation describes URL or HTML input, viewport settings, full-page capture, selector capture and JavaScript-aware waiting. The documented default viewport is 1920 × 1080; override it to match your card requirements rather than relying on that default. See the Cloudflare Browser Run documentation for endpoint details.
- Read the canonical website URL from the restaurant’s directory record and validate that it is a URL your capture system should request.
- Set a consistent output contract: viewport width and height, aspect ratio, file type, and whether you need the initial viewport, full page or one element.
- Submit the URL to a screenshot endpoint and save the response as the image associated with that listing.
- For pages that render content after initial navigation, wait for a suitable completion condition or a known content selector. Cloudflare documents
networkidle0,networkidle2andwaitForSelectorapproaches. - Store the capture’s source URL and capture time with the listing. Refresh when the URL or page changes, and display a fallback when rendering fails. There is no universal refresh interval established for directory thumbnails.
When browser automation is a better fit
Use a scripted browser session when the workflow must navigate or interact with a site before the capture, or when different sites need specific handling. A one-shot action is more suitable for simple URL-to-image requests. The added control comes with browser-session operations to manage; compare the costs and concurrency implications against your workload instead of assuming one approach will always be cheaper.
Wait for JavaScript-rendered content
A page-load event does not necessarily mean a modern restaurant website has finished drawing its content. Cloudflare warns that its default load behavior may capture a JavaScript-heavy single-page application too early. If a screenshot is blank or missing the main content, wait for a page-specific selector when possible. A network-idle condition can help when the page’s network activity settles predictably, but a known content selector is often a clearer signal that the part you need is present.

Full-page capture is useful when the content you need is below the fold, but it may not suit a compact listing card. For a directory thumbnail, a fixed viewport or a selected element usually keeps the output consistent across listings.

By using this server book, you can efficiently maintain organization and have all necessary items easily accessible while serving customers, ultimately enhancing your efficiency in providing exceptional service.
Store, refresh and handle failures
- Associate each image with its restaurant listing, source URL and capture time so you can identify stale or misattributed thumbnails.
- Refresh when the restaurant’s URL changes or the page is known to have changed. Choose a refresh schedule based on your directory’s needs; vendor documentation does not prescribe a universal interval.
- Provide a fallback image if the page cannot be rendered, times out or returns no useful content, rather than leaving a broken image in the card.
- Track failures separately from successful captures so transient problems can be retried without silently replacing a usable thumbnail.
Understand hosted-rendering limits and cost
Cloudflare’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 10 minutes of browser time per day on Workers Free and 10 hours per month on Workers Paid. It lists $0.09 per additional browser hour on Workers Paid. Browser Sessions beyond the included monthly average have a listed concurrency charge of $2 per additional browser. These are published plan terms, not a cost estimate for a particular restaurant directory; actual cost depends on browser time, plan and concurrency. Check Cloudflare’s current pricing before estimating or publishing a budget, because rates and limits can change.
For any provider, estimate work using your expected number of listings, recapture frequency and behavior on slow or failed sites. Test the actual workflow and error handling at the volume you expect; published capability descriptions do not establish real-world reliability or total cost for your workload.

Permission is separate from technical ability
The ability of an endpoint to render a public restaurant URL does not establish that your directory may capture and republish that site. Permission can depend on the site, intended use and applicable jurisdiction. Review the relevant site terms and obtain advice for your use case when needed; there is no blanket permission conclusion established here.

ScreenshotNeo turns a URL into a screenshot with one GET request. Cookie banners are accepted and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot is blank or missing the main content | The page is JavaScript-heavy and the capture occurred before it rendered. | Wait for a known content selector or use a documented network-idle wait condition. |
| The useful section is missing from the image | The target is below the fold or the full page was not captured. | Use full-page capture or capture the relevant element by selector. |
| Cards look inconsistent | Different viewport dimensions or capture choices produce different compositions. | Apply one viewport and output contract across listings; use element capture only where the target is reliably identifiable. |
| A listing shows no image | The site failed to load, timed out or could not be rendered. | Use a fallback image, record the failure and retry according to your workflow. |
| A map image is being treated as a site preview | Map imagery and rendered website screenshots are different outputs. | Choose a website capture for a site preview, or a map snapshot for location context. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API capture a JavaScript-rendered restaurant website?
Yes. Cloudflare documents that its screenshot endpoint processes HTML and JavaScript, but a JavaScript-heavy page may need an explicit wait for a selector or network activity to settle.
