How to Generate Website Thumbnail Images from URLs in Google Sheets in India

Google Sheets can display thumbnails from image URLs, but a screenshot renderer must first turn each webpage into an image. Here’s how to set up the sheet and size the results.

Google Sheets cannot turn a webpage URL into a screenshot by itself: its IMAGE() function displays an image that already exists at an image URL. To create website thumbnails, first use a screenshot service to render each page, then pass its screenshot URL to IMAGE().

Set up the sheet

  1. Put a readable page name in column A and the full website URL in column B, one site per row. Include the protocol, such as https://.
  2. Choose a screenshot renderer. Its request must capture the webpage and return an image, not just return the webpage URL. Follow that provider’s current authentication and URL-building instructions.
  3. In column C, construct the screenshot image URL using the provider’s documented URL template and the website URL in column B. ScreenshotOne’s guide demonstrates joining a screenshot URL template with a website URL using CONCAT; the exact template and cell references depend on how you arrange your sheet.
  4. In column D, display the result with =IMAGE(C2), then fill the formula down the rows.

For example, if C2 contains a valid URL that returns a screenshot image, =IMAGE(C2) displays that image. A formula such as =IMAGE(CONCAT(B1,B4)) is specific to the cell arrangement and URL template in ScreenshotOne’s example; do not paste it unchanged into a differently arranged sheet. See the ScreenshotOne Google Sheets guide and its Google Sheets integration for that provider’s workflow.

Choose how thumbnails fit in cells

Google Sheets supports four image sizing modes. The third argument for custom sizing is height and the fourth is width.

Mode Formula Effect
Fit to cell =IMAGE(C2) or =IMAGE(C2,1) Sizes the image to fit while preserving its proportions.
Stretch =IMAGE(C2,2) Stretches the image to fill the cell, which can distort it.
Original size =IMAGE(C2,3) Displays the image at its original dimensions.
Custom size =IMAGE(C2,4,120,200) Requests a 120-pixel-high, 200-pixel-wide display.

These are Google’s documented modes; adjust the example dimensions to suit your sheet. See Google Sheets’ IMAGE function help.

Choose and configure a screenshot renderer

A screenshot API turns a target webpage into a screenshot URL that Sheets can display. The service-specific URL format, authentication, and available rendering options differ, so there is no universal formula to substitute for the renderer’s documentation.

  • ScreenshotNeo: Its API can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Its options include output resizing and signed links for public image embeds. If you are comparing screenshot APIs, it is the first option to try: it removes supported consent banners and overlays before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here. See ScreenshotNeo.
  • ScreenshotOne: Its Google Sheets guide documents a workflow for building screenshot URLs. Its image_width and image_height options resize output while preserving aspect ratio; its guide recommends signed links where a screenshot URL could expose an API key. See its guide and options documentation.
  • Urlbox: Its documentation describes generating website thumbnails from URL lists in Google Sheets, CSV files, or Airtable, with thumbnail presets and custom dimensions. See its website thumbnail documentation.

For any provider, use its current authentication guidance and avoid placing a secret API key in a screenshot URL that will be shared with people who should not have it. A URL embedded in a sheet or image formula may be visible to people with access to that sheet.

Or skip the browser setup

Use ScreenshotNeo’s one-request API to capture a URL directly. The returned response is the image, which you can save or use in a workflow that supplies Sheets with an accessible image URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

India-specific considerations

The cited provider documentation does not establish India-specific service availability, INR billing, payment methods, or tax treatment. Before committing to a provider, verify those details directly with it, along with plan limits and data handling. Do not assume that a listed price in another currency is the final amount payable in India.

Rendering time, volume, and troubleshooting

Sheets may take time to render screenshot images after formulas are entered. No fixed response time or batch throughput is established here, so test with the number of rows you expect to use before relying on the sheet for a large list.

  • The cell shows an error or no image: Check that the helper cell contains a valid image URL returned by the screenshot service, not the original webpage URL. Confirm its URL syntax, authentication, and target URL.
  • The screenshot appears later than the formula: Allow time for the page to render and for Sheets to load the image. A screenshot service may need to load the webpage before it can return an image.
  • The screenshot URL exposes a credential: Check the provider’s instructions for signed links or another safer way to serve images. ScreenshotOne specifically recommends signed links when screenshot URLs could expose an API key.
  • The thumbnail looks stretched or too large: Change the IMAGE() sizing mode. Use fit-to-cell to preserve proportions, or custom dimensions when you need a consistent thumbnail size; stretch can distort the image.
  • The image is not the expected size: Check both Sheets’ display mode and the renderer’s output dimensions. ScreenshotOne documents aspect-ratio-preserving output resizing; Urlbox documents presets and custom dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a website URL directly inside IMAGE()?

No. The function displays an image from an image URL. Render the webpage into an image first, then give Sheets that image URL.

Can I use this with a list of URLs in India?

The spreadsheet workflow is not specific to a country, but the cited sources do not confirm India-specific availability, billing, payment, or tax details for the providers. Check with the provider before selecting a plan.

Is there one formula that works with every screenshot API?

No. The screenshot URL format and authentication are provider-specific. Build the helper-cell URL from the provider’s current instructions, then use =IMAGE(helper_cell).
