How to Generate Website Screenshots for a Directory Using PHP in India

Use PHP with a headless browser to capture each site in a directory, save predictable files, and handle failures without losing the rest of the batch.

To generate screenshots for a directory of websites, have PHP launch a headless Chrome/Chromium browser, visit each URL, and save the resulting image under a safe, predictable filename. A practical workflow is to validate the output directory, capture each site independently, and log failures so one unavailable page does not stop the batch. The approach is the same in India; check that your particular server supports the browser and runtime versions required by your chosen library.

Choose a PHP browser integration

PHP coordinates the work, but the documented approaches render pages in a real browser. Choose an integration based on how much browser control you need and what your host can run.

Option Best fit Requirements and considerations
Chrome PHP Direct control of Chrome or Chromium from PHP. The project documents PHP 7.4–8.5, Chrome/Chromium 65+, navigation, viewport settings, and screenshot saving. Recheck current requirements before installation.
Playwright PHP Playwright-style page and element capture, including viewport and full-page screenshots. Its examples list PHP 8.2+ and Node.js 20+. Confirm both runtimes and browser support on the deployment host.
Spatie Browsershot A higher-level wrapper around Puppeteer and Chrome for URL or HTML input and image output. Check its current installation instructions and runtime requirements; the README says its older v2 CLI path is no longer maintained.

Chrome PHP is a reasonable starting point when you want PHP to control Chrome directly. Prefer Playwright PHP if its page and element capture model fits your application. Consider Browsershot for a compact wrapper, while following its current supported setup rather than relying on the older v2 CLI path. In every case, the server must be able to run the browser process and write to the destination directory.

Prepare the URL list and output directory

Keep URLs as data rather than treating them as filenames. Use an index or an application record ID for output names, or derive a sanitized slug and make it unique; raw URLs contain characters that are unsafe or awkward in paths, and different URLs can normalize to the same slug.

  1. Validate the input. Process only intended HTTP or HTTPS URLs and decide how the directory should handle duplicate entries.
  2. Create or verify the destination. Ensure the PHP process has write permission before starting a potentially long batch.
  3. Choose a stable naming rule. For example, pair a record ID with a sequence number, and choose a consistent image extension.
  4. Keep a result record. Associate each input URL with its output path and status so a missing file is not mistaken for a successful capture.

Playwright PHP’s ScreenshotHelper reference lists filename-generation, directory-creation, cleanup, and directory-information helpers. Those utilities may help if you use that integration; the naming and permission checks are useful regardless of library.

Capture each website and handle failures separately

Use a loop that treats every URL as an independent job. For each entry, navigate, wait for a state appropriate to the page, capture the requested extent, and record success or failure. Set a timeout that fits your workload and continue to the next URL when one site cannot be reached or does not finish loading. The package documentation describes browser navigation and capture mechanisms; the per-URL batch policy is an application-level choice.

  • Wait deliberately: a navigation event alone may not mean that the content you need is ready. When correctness matters, wait for a target selector or otherwise assert the relevant page state before saving.
  • Choose the output extent: a viewport capture shows the current screen; full-page capture includes below-the-fold content; element capture isolates a selected component.
  • Preserve failure details: log the URL, error, and attempt outcome. Do not silently create an empty or misleading file for a failed visit.
  • Control batch size: browser sessions consume server resources. Process a manageable number at a time rather than assuming the host can handle an unbounded queue.

The exact API calls differ among Chrome PHP, Playwright PHP, and Browsershot. Follow the selected package’s current installation and capture examples rather than combining snippets from different libraries.

Deploying from an Indian server

The reviewed package documentation does not establish a workflow, benchmark, legal requirement, or hosting-provider recommendation unique to India. Apply the same browser-automation approach, then verify the specific server or hosting plan you intend to use.

  • Check the installed PHP version against the selected package’s current requirements.
  • Check whether Chrome/Chromium is available and whether the host permits PHP to start browser processes.
  • If your selected integration requires Node.js, verify its version and availability too.
  • Confirm process and memory limits are adequate for your batch size, and that the screenshot directory is writable.

For version-sensitive details, use the project documentation linked above and check it again when deploying; package requirements can change.

Keep screenshots useful and safe

Screenshots can contain credentials, personal information, or other sensitive page content. Limit access to generated files and retain them only as long as the application needs them. For visual comparisons, keep important rendering inputs consistent: viewport, fonts, animations, page data, browser version, and execution environment can all affect pixels even when the site has not meaningfully changed.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.

For a PHP directory job, make a request for each URL and save the response body using your own stable filename and failure-handling logic. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

<?php
$url = 'https://stripe.com'; // Replace with the current URL from your directory
$apiKey = getenv('SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY');
if (!$apiKey) {
    throw new RuntimeException('Set SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY before running this script.');
}

$query = http_build_query([
    'access_key' => $apiKey,
    'url' => $url,
]);
$ch = curl_init('https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?' . $query);
curl_setopt_array($ch, [
    CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true,
    CURLOPT_TIMEOUT => 90,
]);
$body = curl_exec($ch);
$status = curl_getinfo($ch, CURLINFO_RESPONSE_CODE);
$error = curl_error($ch);
curl_close($ch);

if ($body === false || $status < 200 || $status >= 300) {
    throw new RuntimeException('Screenshot request failed: ' . ($error ?: 'HTTP ' . $status));
}

if (!is_dir(__DIR__ . '/screenshots') && !mkdir(__DIR__ . '/screenshots', 0755, true)) {
    throw new RuntimeException('Could not create screenshots directory.');
}
file_put_contents(__DIR__ . '/screenshots/site-001.webp', $body);
?>

This example saves a successful response as WebP and uses a fixed filename to make the mechanics clear; in a directory batch, replace it with a collision-safe name tied to the corresponding record. Add per-URL exception handling and logging so a request failure does not prevent later entries from being processed. Troubleshooting the self-hosted workflow

  • Browser executable not found: install or configure the Chrome/Chromium executable required by the package, and confirm the PHP process can access it.
  • Process launch or permission error: check whether your host permits browser subprocesses and whether the account running PHP can access required files and write to the screenshot directory.
  • Timeouts or incomplete pages: use an appropriate navigation timeout and wait for the page state or selector needed by the capture instead of assuming all sites load identically.
  • Missing content below the fold: use the library’s full-page capture option rather than a viewport screenshot.
  • Unexpectedly different comparison images: align viewport, fonts, animation state, page data, browser version, and environment before interpreting pixel differences.
  • Batch stops after one bad URL: isolate each capture in its own error-handling branch, record the failure, and continue with remaining URLs.
