How to Generate Test Automation with ChatGPT

Use ChatGPT to draft tests with project context, explicit expected behavior, and edge cases—then review every assertion and run the tests in your real environment.

ChatGPT can draft automated tests, but the useful result depends on the context you give it and the checks you make afterward. Provide the code or a narrowly scoped repository task, the expected behavior, your language and test framework, and examples of existing tests. Ask for normal cases, boundaries, invalid inputs, and failure paths; then inspect every assertion and run the tests in your project.

What ChatGPT can—and cannot—do for test automation

ChatGPT can help turn a described behavior into a first draft of unit, integration, or property-based tests. It can also help adapt tests to patterns you show it and diagnose failures when you provide the actual output. OpenAI describes Codex as a coding-focused experience for writing and debugging code, running tests and commands, reviewing changes, and working with a repository; ChatGPT Chat is conversational assistance. Available Codex features and access can vary by plan and workspace, so check current OpenAI availability information before relying on a particular setup.

A generated test is not proof that the software is correct. It may misunderstand a requirement, make an assumption about an edge case, or merely encode what the current implementation happens to do. OpenAI’s Codex guidance says users still need to review and validate agent-generated code before integration and execution. No reviewed published statistic establishes a general reliability rate or defect-finding ability for ChatGPT-generated tests, so treat each result as a draft to validate—not as a correctness guarantee.

Choose the test level that matches the behavior

Unit tests

Use a unit test when the behavior can be checked at the level of a function or small module. Supply its inputs, expected outputs, and relevant conditions. Keep the request focused enough that the test’s purpose and assertions are easy to verify.

Integration tests

Use an integration test when the requirement concerns how components work together. Tell ChatGPT which boundary or interaction matters and what dependencies or setup the project uses. A test that only mocks away the behavior in question may not verify the integration you intended.

Property-based tests

Use property-based testing when you can describe an invariant that should hold across many generated inputs, rather than only listing a few examples. State the invariant clearly and ask the model to identify assumptions about the valid input domain. OpenAI’s coding-use-case material names unit, integration, and property-based tests as possible tasks; it does not establish one framework as the right choice for every project.

Give ChatGPT enough context to write useful tests

Start with one function, module, API behavior, or similarly bounded task. Include the smallest relevant code and context needed to make the behavior unambiguous:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Code or repository scope: Paste the function or describe the specific files and behavior to work on. If you use a repository-aware coding workflow, keep the requested change narrowly scoped.
  • Language and test framework: Name the language, framework, and any conventions that affect syntax, setup, fixtures, or assertions.
  • Existing examples: Provide one or two representative tests from the project so the draft can follow local naming, organization, and helper patterns.
  • Expected behavior: Describe what should happen for ordinary inputs and important states. Include expected values or outcomes where you can.
  • Edges and failures: Specify boundary values, empty inputs, maximum lengths, null inputs where relevant, invalid states, malformed inputs, and failure behavior.
  • Assumptions: Ask the model to call out behavior it cannot determine from the prompt instead of silently choosing a rule.

Vague prompts leave requirements unstated. For instance, “write tests for this” does not tell the model whether an empty input is valid, whether an error should be thrown or returned, or how the test suite is organized. Those decisions belong to the project, not to a guess in generated code.

A prompt template for generating tests

Adapt this sample to your code and project; it is a prompt pattern, not a guaranteed formula:

Using the existing [framework] conventions, write tests for this function: [paste function or describe the narrowly scoped behavior]. It is written in [language]. Follow the patterns in these existing tests: [paste relevant example(s)]. Cover the documented behavior, boundary values, empty and invalid inputs, and failure cases that apply. For each test, explain what its assertion checks. Call out assumptions you had to make or behavior that is unclear. Generate the tests first; do not change the implementation unless I ask.

When you have a specific requirement for an edge case, state the expected outcome rather than asking ChatGPT to invent one. For example, say whether invalid input should raise a particular error, return a defined result, or be rejected by validation. This helps keep tests tied to the intended contract.

Generate, review, and run tests in a controlled workflow

  1. Pick one behavior. Avoid asking for an entire application to be automated at once. A narrow request makes it easier to provide relevant context and judge the result.
  2. Describe the contract. Supply the code or task scope, expected behavior, framework, conventions, and important edge and failure cases.
  3. Ask for a limited draft. Request a small, relevant set of tests and an explanation of each assertion. Have the model list assumptions rather than burying them in test code.
  4. Review each test against the requirement. Check that assertions express intended behavior—not just the behavior of the current implementation. Confirm that the test would fail if the relevant behavior were broken.
  5. Run the project’s normal test command. Use the project’s ordinary dependencies, configuration, and environment. In a repository-aware Codex workflow, OpenAI describes running tests and commands as part of coding work, but you still need to inspect the results.
  6. Investigate failures using evidence. Share the exact failure output and relevant context if you ask ChatGPT to diagnose it. Decide whether the issue is a mistaken test, a code defect, or an environment/setup problem before accepting a proposed change.
  7. Review changes before integration. Inspect generated test code and any suggested implementation edits yourself, then validate them in the project before incorporating them.

How to decide whether a test draft fits your project

There is no single framework recommendation that applies to every codebase. When selecting or evaluating a test approach, check these practical questions:

  • Does it work with the project’s language and existing test setup?
  • Can it exercise the behavior at the level that matters—unit, integration, or property-based?
  • Does it follow repository conventions instead of introducing an unrelated style or helper pattern?
  • Can it run through the project’s normal local and continuous-integration workflows?

Ask ChatGPT to use the framework already present unless you have a concrete reason to change it. If framework-specific setup is unclear, verify it against that framework’s current official documentation rather than treating generated setup instructions as authoritative.

Troubleshoot common problems

The tests do not compile or import

The draft may use a different framework version, assertion API, module path, fixture, or project convention. Compare it with working tests in the repository and the project’s installed dependencies. Ask for a revision using the exact compiler or test-runner error and a nearby example that works.

A test fails on an edge case

First check whether the test’s expected result matches the requirement. If the requirement is unclear, resolve it before changing either test or implementation. Then determine whether the failure points to a code defect, an incorrect generated assertion, or an unmet environmental prerequisite.

The tests pass but do not provide meaningful coverage

Passing tests only show that the tested assertions passed in that run. Inspect whether each test would detect a violation of the requirement, and add cases for important boundaries, invalid states, or failure paths that the draft missed. Do not infer completeness from a green test run alone.

ChatGPT invents behavior or project details

Supply the missing code, examples, or expected behavior, and ask it to list unresolved assumptions. Remove tests that assert a rule the project has not established. A test should encode a requirement, not an unapproved guess.

The output is too broad or difficult to review

Reduce the request to one function or behavior and ask for a small set of tests. Provide the project’s existing pattern and ask the model to avoid unrelated refactoring or implementation edits.

Or skip the browser setup

If your automation task includes capturing pages for visual checks, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the API’s documentation lists its options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
