Cloudinary can turn an image asset into a branded social preview image by applying transformations such as resizing, cropping, and text or image overlays. To make that image appear when someone shares a page, your application must also put its Cloudinary URL in the page’s Open Graph metadata. For Next.js, Cloudinary documents the CldOgImage component and getCldOgImageUrl helper for this workflow.
This creates an image for a webpage; it is not the same as taking a screenshot of an arbitrary webpage. The Cloudinary documentation covered here describes image transformations and social-card helpers, not automatic webpage rendering or extraction of page content.

Choose how to create the image
There are two practical starting points: use an image already stored in Cloudinary, or fetch a remote image and deliver a transformed version through Cloudinary. In either case, your application supplies the page-specific content and decides how it becomes artwork—for example, by combining a background image, a title, and a logo.

Cloudinary describes its dynamic URL transformations as a way to generate variations of original images on demand. Transformation operations may count toward account usage; check the applicable plan rather than assuming they are free. Exact plan pricing and limits are not covered here.

Generate a social card with Next.js
Cloudinary’s Next.js SDK documents two relevant options: CldOgImage, a component for generating Open Graph images through the transformation API, and getCldOgImageUrl, a helper for generating a social-card URL for App Router metadata. Use the component or helper according to the rendering approach in your application, then make sure the generated image URL is present in the page’s Open Graph image metadata.
- Build the card from page data. Pass the title, branding, and any other page-specific content your card-generation logic needs. Do not expect Cloudinary to discover the page’s title or description automatically.
- Generate the image URL. Use
CldOgImageorgetCldOgImageUrlas documented for the version of the Next.js SDK installed in your project. Their version-specific props and metadata integration should come from the current SDK documentation; they are not interchangeable with an arbitrary webpage-screenshot function. - Set the page metadata. Put the generated URL in the page’s Open Graph image metadata using the metadata mechanism for your Next.js App Router page. A valid Cloudinary image URL alone does not configure your page’s metadata.
- Verify the output. Check the generated image URL and the page metadata separately. If either is missing or points to the wrong image, a correct transformation URL by itself will not fix the page’s social preview.

Build a Cloudinary delivery URL in another stack
For a stack without the Next.js-specific helpers, the general pattern is to construct a Cloudinary delivery URL, then set that URL as the page’s Open Graph image value in your framework’s metadata or HTML output. Cloudinary’s documented URL structure comprises the cloud name, asset type, delivery type, optional transformations, version, public ID, and extension. SDK URL helpers can construct delivery URLs, and image-tag helpers can use them in HTML.

- Apply transformations for the card’s composition: for example, resize or crop the source and add a title or logo as an overlay.
- Use the resulting delivery URL as the page’s Open Graph image URL in the metadata mechanism used by your framework.
- Check both the delivered image and the final page metadata when debugging. These are separate parts of the implementation.
Text overlays can specify a font and size, add styling, and control placement. Image overlays can also be layered and transformed. The exact design depends on your source asset and target layout; the documentation covered here does not establish a universal social-card crop or dimension.

Handle remote images and changing content
Cloudinary Fetch can retrieve remote images and deliver them through Cloudinary URLs with transformations. Whether a particular remote URL works depends on your environment’s fetch settings: fetching may be unrestricted or may require a signed URL, and an allowed-fetch-domain list can reject a host that is not on the list. The remote URL must resolve to supported media.
Fetched assets are cached. Updating the file at its original remote URL does not necessarily refresh the fetched asset or its transformed versions automatically. If your page-specific source image changes, plan how the Cloudinary asset and derived image will be refreshed. Do not expose credentials in a fetch URL delivered to a client.

Screenshot a page instead of composing a card
If the desired preview is a picture of the rendered webpage itself, that is a different task from composing a designed card with Cloudinary transformations. Cloudinary’s documented image and Open Graph tools described above do not establish arbitrary webpage rendering or automatic page-content extraction. Troubleshoot common failures
- The image URL works, but the share preview is missing or wrong: Check that the page’s Open Graph image metadata actually contains the generated URL. Image delivery and page metadata are distinct steps.
- A remote source cannot be fetched: Check the environment’s fetch settings, whether the URL needs signing, whether its host is allowed, and whether it resolves to supported media.
- The remote source changed but the delivered image did not: Fetch and transformed assets are cached, so a source-file change may not automatically update the delivered result. Use an explicit refresh strategy appropriate to your application.
- The card lacks the page title or branding: Supply that content to the card-generation logic and configure text or image overlays. The documented Open Graph helpers do not establish automatic extraction of a webpage’s content.
- Transformation usage is higher than expected: Transformations may count toward account usage. Review the applicable Cloudinary plan and how your application requests transformed assets.
