To generate a personalized Open Graph image with Satori, resolve the page’s content, pass it into a reusable JSX template, and serve the SVG Satori returns from a public URL referenced by that page’s og:image metadata. In Next.js, the framework’s ImageResponse can turn a JSX tree into an image response from a metadata file or route. A 1200 × 630 card is a common documented example, not a universal requirement for every social platform.
How the Satori Open Graph image flow works
Keep the design stable and make the content request-specific. For a post, for example, look up its title, author, and optional image using the route slug, then pass those values to a pure render template. The resulting image endpoint must be publicly reachable so services that read page metadata can request it.

- Resolve content: use a route parameter, query parameter, or other request context to find the page’s data.
- Render the card: build a supported JSX tree and provide font data and output dimensions to Satori.
- Return an image: Satori itself returns SVG. A framework helper such as Next.js
ImageResponseprovides a convenient image-response route. - Expose the URL: set the page’s absolute image URL as
og:imagemetadata, then deploy the endpoint so it can be fetched publicly.

Build a reusable Satori template
Satori converts JSX or a React-like element object to SVG. It is not a browser: it implements a subset of HTML and CSS, with Flexbox as its main layout model. Use supported elements and inline style objects, and inspect generated output rather than expecting pixel-identical browser rendering.

This core example returns SVG, not PNG. It assumes interBuffer has already been loaded as a Node.js Buffer or web ArrayBuffer from a compatible font file, and that title is the string to display:

Make variable content safe to render
Titles can be much longer than the space in a card. Set a deliberate layout, constrain the text region, and use wrapping or truncation that preserves meaning. Provide a fallback when a record is missing or its title is empty. These are implementation safeguards; Satori does not automatically know how much of a title your design can accommodate.

For a post-specific card, the route should pass the same content version used for the page’s title and metadata. Otherwise, a fetched or cached image can show a different title from the page that points to it.
Provide fonts and account for text direction
Text rendering requires explicit font data. The current Satori README lists TTF, OTF, and WOFF formats and says WOFF2 is unsupported. Supply the family name, weight, and style that match the font data. Check that the font license permits your intended server-side use. If the font does not change between requests, the README recommends reusing global font objects for performance.
Satori outlines glyphs into SVG paths by default, so later SVG processing does not need the original font file. Setting embedFont: false produces <text> elements instead; use that only if the software that consumes the SVG can provide suitable fonts.

You can supply a locale using lang, and Satori can dynamically load missing emoji or font assets. HarfBuzz helps shape complex scripts such as Arabic, but full Unicode bidirectional layout is not supported. Test mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text directly in the generated image.
Choose a Next.js route and publish its metadata
In the Next.js App Router, an opengraph-image.tsx metadata file can read route params, fetch matching content, and render it with ImageResponse. This is a framework-native path for images associated with a route. A custom API route is another option when you want an explicit endpoint or need to share rendering across routes.
Next.js documents generated metadata images as statically optimized by default; fetch behavior or route-segment options can change that. Decide whether content should be fixed at build time or personalized at request time, and configure the route accordingly. For a custom endpoint, use the same principles: resolve the request’s content, create the Satori tree, and return the desired response format.

Set the absolute URL of the generated image as the page’s og:image. Next.js metadata files can emit image type, dimensions, and alt metadata as well. Confirm that the deployed endpoint is public and returns the intended image response.
SVG output versus an image response
- Direct Satori call: useful when SVG is the format you want to return or process. It does not itself convert the SVG to PNG.
- Framework image response: Next.js
ImageResponseis a convenient way to return an image from a metadata file or route. Follow the framework’s documented rendering setup rather than treating the bare Satori example as a PNG encoder.
Check runtime, assets, and caching
The Satori README lists direct use in browsers, Node.js 16+, and Web Workers. In constrained WASM environments such as Cloudflare Workers, its standalone build requires the Yoga yoga.wasm file to be supplied and initialized.

Images can be included with <img>; explicit width and height are recommended. Background images stretch by default when no size is set, so specify sizing deliberately when using them in a card.

Cache behavior depends on the framework, route, and host. Next.js documents static optimization by default for metadata image output, with behavior affected by fetch and route-segment settings. Vercel says @vercel/og adds CDN headers to cache computed images. Neither statement establishes a universal freshness period or invalidation method: verify the behavior of your deployed route and decide how changed post data should update its image.
Troubleshoot common Satori problems
- Unsupported CSS or layout differs from the browser: Satori implements only part of HTML and CSS. Reduce the card to supported static elements and inline styles, use Flexbox for layout, and inspect the generated output.
- Text is missing or the font looks wrong: confirm that the font bytes are loaded and passed with the correct family, weight, and style. Use a listed font format; WOFF2 is not supported according to the current README.
- Long text runs out of space: constrain the text area and choose wrapping or truncation rules; test the longest titles and names your content can contain.
- Arabic or mixed-direction text is misplaced: test the actual locale and text. HarfBuzz helps with shaping complex scripts, but full Unicode bidirectional layout is not supported.
- Standalone worker build cannot initialize: check that Yoga’s
yoga.wasmis available and initialized as required for that build. - The social preview is missing or stale: fetch the deployed image URL directly, confirm it is public and returns the expected response, inspect the page’s absolute
og:imagevalue, and check static generation and cache behavior for that host.
