To generate a PDF invoice with DocRaptor, render your invoice data into HTML, send that HTML in a server-side JSON POST to https://api.docraptor.com/docs with type set to pdf, then save the response bytes as a PDF. Keep your API key on the server. The example below uses Python and returns a downloadable PDF from a small web application; adapt the HTML and delivery step to your stack.
Choose how DocRaptor should receive and return the invoice
DocRaptor converts HTML or XML to PDF. For an invoice your application has already rendered, send its markup as document_content. Alternatively, use document_url when DocRaptor should fetch a page itself. These are alternative inputs; the basic PDF request sets type to pdf. See the API reference and API overview.

The direct REST API accepts JSON at https://api.docraptor.com/docs. DocRaptor’s preferred direct REST authentication is HTTP Basic Authentication with the API key as the username and a blank password. Do not put the key in browser JavaScript: DocRaptor warns that a browser library exposes it in publicly accessible page source. See the HTML and JavaScript tutorial.

Keep invoice values in structured application data rather than concatenating untrusted input into markup. A typical template needs seller and customer details, an invoice identifier and dates, line items, quantities, unit prices, applicable taxes, totals, and payment instructions. Escape customer- or user-supplied text for HTML and validate numeric values before rendering; these are general secure application practices, not a DocRaptor-specific invoice schema.

The following Python example uses Flask and the requests package. It renders a small fixed example invoice, asks DocRaptor for a test PDF, and returns the binary response as a download. Install dependencies with python -m pip install Flask requests, set DOCRAPTOR_API_KEY in the server environment, save as app.py, and run with python app.py. Open http://127.0.0.1:5000/invoice.pdf. The test PDF is watermarked; switch test to false only when you intend to create a non-test document.

Log an appropriate request identifier and error details on the server, return a generic error to the client, and store or stream successful bytes according to your application’s access-control and retention rules.
Submit a minimal request in other common environments

This command sends inline HTML and writes the PDF response to invoice.pdf. Replace the example HTML with the markup generated from your invoice data. Keep the key in a server-side environment variable.

Use a server-side Node.js runtime with DOCRAPTOR_API_KEY set. This example checks the HTTP result before saving bytes, so an API error is not silently written with a .pdf extension.

Use test mode while adjusting layout
Set test to true while checking page breaks, totals, typography, logos, and print styles. DocRaptor says test documents are unlimited and do not count toward monthly plan limits, but test PDFs carry a watermark and are previews, not final customer deliverables. Change the flag to false for a production document. The API reference describes the test option.
Keep static invoice HTML static where practical
JavaScript is disabled by default, so a server-rendered invoice usually needs no script execution. Enable the relevant javascript option only if the document depends on client-rendered content or scripts. DocRaptor documents two JavaScript engines and cautions that enabling both can cause scripts to execute twice. Review the JavaScript execution documentation and API reference before enabling an engine.

Use print CSS for predictable pagination
Design and test for the page size and margins your invoices need. Use print styles to keep headings with relevant content, avoid splitting short totals blocks across pages, and control repeated table headers where the renderer supports the CSS behavior you choose. Check multi-page invoices as well as one-page examples: a template that looks fine in a browser window may paginate differently in a PDF. DocRaptor converts your supplied markup; successful rendering does not validate invoice facts or guarantee jurisdiction-specific compliance.

Choose synchronous, asynchronous, or hosted delivery deliberately
A synchronous request is simplest when generation finishes comfortably within the request window: the successful response contains PDF bytes, which your app can store or return to the user. For longer-running jobs, the asynchronous flow returns a status_id that your application uses to retrieve the result later. Hosted generation returns a public URL; treat that URL as a delivery choice with access implications, not as a private file by default. The API overview explains the response modes.
DocRaptor’s API limits page, accessed in 2026, lists a one-minute synchronous generation limit, a ten-minute asynchronous generation limit, 30 simultaneous requests, and a 100 MB hosted-document output limit. The same page says there is no hard page-count or document-complexity limit, while noting complex documents can take several minutes. These operational figures may change, so verify the current API limits before launch. Queue work and apply backpressure if your expected concurrency could exceed the listed cap; do not assume a synchronous endpoint will wait indefinitely.

Plan for usage and hosted-document charges
DocRaptor plans have monthly document quotas. Its overage documentation gives Professional as an example with 325 documents in a billing cycle and an example overage price of 9 cents per document; the quota is an illustration, not a guaranteed current plan allowance. Hosted documents have a separate plan-based fee model: the hosting page says each document incurs a small monthly hosting fee and downloads after the first five are billed at a plan-based rate. Verify your current plan, pricing, hosting terms, and overage rates directly before estimating production costs: overage documentation and hosted-document details.

- The response is an error, not a PDF: Check the HTTP status and response body before saving anything as a PDF. Confirm the API key, JSON encoding, required
type, and that exactly one intended input (document_contentordocument_url) is supplied. The API overview covers errors and responses. - The key works locally but is exposed to users: Move the request to a backend service and read the secret from server configuration. Do not ship the key in public browser JavaScript, as DocRaptor specifically warns in its tutorial.
- The PDF is missing script-generated content: Scripts do not run by default. Enable only the needed JavaScript option and test whether the template depends on one or both engines; both enabled can cause duplicate execution.
- The layout is clipped or split unexpectedly: Inspect the rendered HTML and print CSS, verify the chosen page dimensions and margins, and test with the longest realistic invoice. Check table widths, long descriptions, and page-break behavior rather than relying on a short sample.
- A synchronous request times out: Compare observed render time with the documented one-minute synchronous limit. Use asynchronous generation for longer jobs and retrieve the result through its status flow.
- A test PDF has a watermark: That is expected in test mode. Use
test: falseonly for the final, billable generation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does generating a PDF invoice with DocRaptor make it legally compliant?
No. PDF rendering confirms only that a document was generated; it does not establish that the invoice meets tax, numbering, retention, or e-invoicing rules in a particular jurisdiction. Check the applicable tax authority or qualified legal guidance.
Can DocRaptor create an invoice without sending HTML?
Yes. The API can fetch a source page using document_url instead of receiving markup in document_content, provided the URL is accessible to DocRaptor.
