Before publishing or monetizing the track, check the service’s current terms: permission to use a track commercially is not the same as owning copyright in it.
How to generate an instrumental track
- Decide where the music will go. Choose a practical use, such as background music for a podcast, video, livestream, game session, or presentation. The placement helps define what the track needs to do: music under narration, for example, should leave room for speech.
- Write a concrete direction. Include the scene or purpose, style, mood, instruments, and desired tempo or energy. Suno’s AI instrumental generator guidance describes these as useful details for a written direction.
- Select the instrumental option. In Suno’s generation workflow, choose the instrumental setting before generating. Interface labels and placement can change, so consult the current service interface if the control has moved.
- Listen and revise. Note what works and what does not: perhaps the result needs a calmer mood, a different lead instrument, or a faster pulse. Suno describes regenerating with a revised direction as a way to change the feel, instrumentation, or tempo.
- Choose for the placement, not just the prompt. Listen for whether the music competes with speech and whether its energy fits the visuals or activity. These are practical listening checks, not guaranteed controls or outcomes offered by the service.
- Check the terms before release. Confirm that the plan and service terms allow your intended distribution and monetization. Terms differ between services and can change.
How to write a useful instrumental prompt
A simple structure is: use or scene + genre or style + mood + instruments + tempo or energy + instrumental. For example: “Instrumental ambient piano and soft strings for a reflective travel-film montage, gentle pulse, spacious and calm, gradual lift, no vocals.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested formula or a guarantee of a particular result.

Keep the details that matter to the project and make revisions specific. If the first track is too busy, ask for a simpler arrangement; if the lead sound is wrong, name a different instrument; if the pacing does not fit, describe a slower or more energetic feel. The Associated Press reported a Suno demonstration prompt that included “Afrobeat, flute, drums, 90 beats per minute.” That is an example from a reported demonstration, not a required prompt format.

| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Instrumental workflow | Can you request music without vocals and refine the result toward your intended use? |
| Direction and revision | Can your prompt describe the style, mood, instruments, tempo, energy, or scene you need? |
| Intended use | Do the current plan and terms cover your distribution and monetization—for example, a monetized video, podcast, client project, app, or game? |
| Rights and conditions | What does the service permit, and what limits or plan-specific conditions apply? |
Commercial use and copyright are different questions
A service may allow commercial use under its terms without that permission establishing that the output qualifies for copyright protection. Check both issues separately, and do not assume a rule for one service applies to another.
Suno: plan permissions and copyright
Suno’s paid-subscription guidance says commercial-use rights apply to songs made while subscribed. Its copyright explainer describes this as permission to attempt monetization without Suno claiming a share of royalties, while distinguishing that permission from copyright ownership. Suno says songs made on the free plan are for non-commercial use; its support guidance says a later subscription does not, by default, provide retroactive commercial-use licensing for those songs. Check the current terms for your account and the specific track.

Suno’s Help Center says music made entirely with AI would not qualify for copyright protection because a human did not write the lyrics or music, and that writing the prompt does not constitute creating the song. It notes that treatment may differ by region or registrar. Treat those statements as Suno’s explanation of its position, not universal legal advice.

Stable Audio: service use and self-hosted models
Stability AI’s Stable Audio licensing guidance says commercial use is permitted subject to its Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy, and gives examples including monetized social or video content, advertisements, podcasts, client projects, apps, games, and digital distribution. The page also says users self-hosting certain models under the Community License cannot rely on that license if they or their affiliates exceed $1 million in annual revenue, individually or in aggregate, and must request separate licensing. That threshold applies to the identified self-hosted models, not to all Stable Audio services or plans.

U.S. copyright guidance
In its January 29, 2025 announcement summarizing Part 2 of its AI report, the U.S. Copyright Office said generative AI output can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. It says relevant human contribution may include authored material perceptible in the output or creative arrangements or modifications, but not the mere provision of prompts. This is U.S. guidance; other jurisdictions may differ.
