DocRaptor converts the document; it does not determine GST treatment, check every legal invoice requirement, or obtain an e-invoice IRN. If e-invoicing applies to the transaction, complete the applicable GST portal or IRP workflow separately and include its returned data in the PDF as appropriate.
What you need before generating the PDF
Keep invoice facts in your billing system as structured data. Your application—not the HTML template—should assign invoice numbers, validate dates, determine taxable values and tax breakdowns, and store any applicable e-invoice response fields. Rule 46 lists particulars for tax invoices, with conditional requirements that depend on the issuer and transaction. Review the Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017 and have a qualified GST professional check the template for your circumstances.

- Supplier name, address and GSTIN.
- A consecutive invoice serial number unique for the financial year, no longer than 16 characters. Rule 46 permits letters, numerals, hyphen or dash, and slash.
- Issue date.
- Recipient identity and GSTIN/UIN when registered, plus applicable details for unregistered recipients.
- HSN code, description, and quantity and unit for goods.
- Total supply value, taxable value after applicable discount or abatement, and applicable tax rates and amounts.
- Additional particulars where required, including export or SEZ details and details associated with invoices issued through the Rule 48(4) e-invoice process.
This is a working checklist, not an exhaustive legal opinion. Rule 46 is subject to Rule 54 and transaction-specific conditions. The GST Portal’s IFF user guide says invoice dates cannot be future dates or precede GST registration, and invoice numbers should be unique within a financial year. Treat those as input checks alongside the rules that apply to your supply and issuer.

- Prepare validated invoice data. Retrieve the saved invoice record and confirm its required fields, number, date, tax values and any applicable e-invoice information.
- Render the record into HTML. Use an HTML template that includes the particulars applicable to this invoice. Add CSS for print layout and include only data from the trusted invoice record.
- Submit the HTML to DocRaptor. Send JSON to
https://api.docraptor.com/docswithtypeset topdfanddocument_contentcontaining the HTML. Alternatively, usedocument_urlfor content DocRaptor can retrieve. Direct REST requests use HTTP Basic Authentication with the API key as the username and a blank password; the API reference also documents query-parameter authentication. - Handle the response as a document-generation result. For direct output, check the HTTP status and save the response bytes as a PDF. Hosted-document requests return a public URL, while asynchronous requests return a status identifier to poll. Handle errors instead of assuming every response contains PDF bytes.
- Deliver the saved document through your own workflow. Apply the access controls and retention policy appropriate to your business and the applicable requirements.

Set up the PDF layout
Use a deliberate page size
DocRaptor’s default is US Letter. For an Indian business invoice, select the intended paper size and margins rather than inheriting that default. Its page-size guide shows the CSS form @page { size: A4; }.

Check print styles
Print media rules are applied by default. If the invoice CSS was designed for screen display, review the selected media setting and test the rendered result. See DocRaptor’s print media guidance.
Plan for line-item pagination
CSS properties such as break-before, break-after and break-inside can suggest where page breaks should occur. The renderer attempts to follow those suggestions when possible; they cannot keep a block larger than a page together. See the page-break guide.

Make CSS and assets retrievable
DocRaptor supports embedded, inline and external CSS. Embedding styles can avoid a separate stylesheet fetch. If the HTML references external stylesheets, images or fonts, ensure the renderer can retrieve them; relative URLs need a valid base URL. See the CSS guidance and API reference.
Use test mode only for layout iteration
DocRaptor test documents do not count against monthly limits, but the resulting PDFs carry a watermark. Do not deliver a test-mode PDF as a final invoice. Check the API reference for the test option and its behavior: DocRaptor API documentation.

Keep e-invoice reporting separate from PDF conversion
For notified classes of registered persons, Rule 48(4) requires the invoice to be prepared with Form GST INV-01 particulars and information uploaded to the common GST portal to obtain an Invoice Reference Number (IRN). Under Rule 48(5), an invoice issued by a person subject to sub-rule (4) in another manner is not treated as an invoice. Rule 46 includes an IRN-embedded QR-code provision for invoices issued through that process. Read the applicable text in the CGST Rules and CGST Act.
DocRaptor’s QR-code tutorial explains that QR codes can be included as HTML images, but DocRaptor does not generate the QR code itself. If e-invoicing applies, use the QR image or data returned by the applicable e-invoice process; do not invent an IRN or substitute a decorative code.

The E-Invoice Registration Portal describes direct API integration as suitable for taxpayers with internal IT teams, large transaction volumes and a need for real-time generation. A dated IRIS IRP release note states that taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover (AATO) of ₹10 crore or more must report covered invoices, credit notes and debit notes within 30 days from invoice date, effective 1 April 2025. This is a scoped portal notice, not a complete statement of current e-invoice applicability. Check current official notifications and confirm whether the requirements apply to your taxpayer and transaction at the E-Invoice Registration Portal.
Check and troubleshoot the generated document
- The response is an error, not a PDF: Inspect the HTTP status and response body before saving output as a PDF. Confirm the endpoint, JSON request, authentication and required document input against the API reference.
- Styles or images are missing: Check whether external assets are reachable by the render service and whether relative asset URLs have a valid base URL. Consider embedding CSS or other suitable assets.
- The page looks like a screen layout or has the wrong paper size: Review print media behavior and set the intended page size and margins explicitly. DocRaptor defaults to US Letter, and print media rules are applied by default.
- A table row or block splits unexpectedly: Use page-break properties as suggestions, then inspect the rendered output. A block taller than one page cannot be kept intact by a break-avoidance rule.
- The PDF has a watermark: Test mode creates watermarked PDFs. Generate the final document using the appropriate non-test configuration.
- The document is missing an IRN or QR code: PDF rendering does not report invoice data to the IRP or create its QR code. Complete the applicable reporting workflow and render the returned information.
- You need conversion diagnostics: Inspect the response headers; DocRaptor includes
X-DocRaptor-Num-Pages, which can help diagnose the rendered document.

No. Your application must supply accurate invoice and tax data and check the particulars applicable to the transaction; DocRaptor renders the supplied content.
Does generating a PDF with DocRaptor obtain an IRN?
No. Where e-invoicing applies, reporting and IRN acquisition are a separate GST portal or IRP step.
