The connection command is claude mcp add --transport http FLUX https://mcp.bfl.ai. BFL says generations are billed at its API rates to the organization you select during sign-in, so check that organization’s credits and current pricing before generating.
What the FLUX MCP does in Claude Code
The FLUX MCP connects Claude Code to Black Forest Labs’ hosted image service. BFL describes it as a way to generate, edit, and browse FLUX.2 images inside MCP-compatible apps without writing API code or pasting keys into chat. The server is remote and uses OAuth authentication; this is distinct from third-party projects with similar names.

According to BFL’s official FLUX MCP repository, its generate_image tool supports text-to-image requests, prompted edits, composition using multiple reference images, style transfer, inpainting-style changes, and outpainting. A request can generate one to eight images in parallel. You can also ask for variations based on a previous result and browse recent generation history.
Connect the server and sign in
- In a terminal, run
claude mcp add --transport http FLUX https://mcp.bfl.ai. This adds BFL’s hosted server under the nameFLUX. - When the browser opens, sign in to your BFL account and choose the organization to bill. BFL says OAuth tokens refresh automatically. The selected organization is charged directly at BFL’s API rates; review the BFL site for current pricing rather than relying on an older quoted rate.
- In Claude Code, run
claude mcp listto check that the server appears. Use/mcpto inspect its status or reauthenticate. - Before requesting paid generation, confirm the selected organization has credits. To switch organizations, disconnect and reconnect, then select the intended organization during sign-in.
Choose a model for the job
The model names and use cases below are BFL’s current guidance in its repository, not independently measured rankings. The documentation does not provide benchmark results comparing their quality or speed.

These descriptions are selection cues, not guarantees: choose based on the finish you need, iteration speed, number of reference images, and whether accurate text matters, then inspect the output.
Write a useful generation or edit request
BFL’s prompting guidance recommends leading with the main subject, describing lighting, using hex color values when a precise color matters, putting exact rendered wording in quotation marks, avoiding negative prompts, and refining from generated results with edits or variations.

Generate several directions
For example, BFL’s repository suggests a natural-language request such as: “Generate 4 editorial portrait variants — varied lighting, palette, and mood.” You can specify visual differences you want across the set, then compare the results and request a variation or targeted change.

Attach or otherwise provide the image in Claude Code, then describe the change directly. The repository’s example is: “Add a camel on the sand.” For more controlled edits, state what should change and what visual qualities should guide the result. Prompt-based editing does not guarantee that every detail of the original will remain intact, so inspect the result and iterate if preservation matters.

Use exact text and color cues
If the image must contain wording, quote the exact text and consider flux2_flex, which BFL recommends for typography and readable text. For color precision, include a hex value such as #2E6F78 alongside the plain-language color description.
Troubleshoot connection, uploads, and billing
- The FLUX tools do not appear: check
claude mcp list, then use/mcpto inspect status or reauthenticate. If the connection remains unavailable, runclaude mcp remove FLUXand repeat the add command. - Browser sign-in does not complete: first use requires browser-based BFL sign-in. A blocked pop-up or unfinished authentication can interrupt setup; complete sign-in and organization selection, then check
/mcpagain. - An attached-image edit fails: Claude Code must be allowed to upload the image to BFL. Sandbox restrictions on outbound HTTPS may block uploads; BFL’s repository suggests allowing
*.bfl.aior using a public image URL where appropriate. - A generation takes longer than expected: BFL notes that larger batches,
flux2_max, and complex edits may take longer. Its documentation does not establish a fixed generation time. - Billing fails: verify that the organization selected at OAuth sign-in has credits. Disconnect and reconnect if you need to choose a different organization.
These troubleshooting notes come from BFL’s documentation and cannot guarantee identical behavior across Claude Code versions, network policies, or account configurations.
