The right way to generate a preview image depends on what you want to show. If the page publishes an og:image, fetch and reuse that existing social card. If you need the page’s current, rendered appearance—including JavaScript—capture it with a browser screenshot service, then cache the result. A reliable system tries Open Graph first and falls back to a screenshot when necessary.
Choose between an Open Graph image and a screenshot
| Need | Best path | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| The publisher already designed a social card | Parse og:image |
Fast and preserves the publisher’s intended artwork | It depends on correct metadata and a reachable image URL |
| The preview must show the visible page | Browser screenshot API | Captures rendered HTML, CSS and JavaScript | Rendering takes longer and needs image caching |
| Every preview needs the same branded dimensions | Render, then crop or compose | Produces a consistent card format | Adds image-processing work |
| Content below the fold matters | Full-page capture | Captures the complete scrollable document | The output can become very tall |
Open Graph defines og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url as core properties. Its definition of og:image is an image URL representing the object in the graph. Pages can also provide og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, og:image:height and og:image:alt. When multiple values conflict, the first tag from top to bottom is preferred.
Build the Open Graph path first
1. Fetch the page on your server
Normalize and validate the submitted URL before fetching it. Server-side fetching lets you enforce redirect, timeout, DNS and network policies and prevents a browser-only client from becoming your crawler.
2. Parse the first usable image tag
Look for a meta element whose property is og:image. Resolve a relative value against the page URL, reject unsupported schemes and validate the response’s image content type before storing it. The companion secure URL can be used when available.

if not content_type.startswith("image/"):

In production, download the image into your own object storage instead of handing users a third-party URL. Record the source URL, retrieval time and image dimensions so you can refresh stale cards. Set size limits and reject private-network destinations to reduce server-side request forgery risk.
3. Cache the downloaded result
Cache by normalized page URL and image URL, honor your own freshness policy, and retain the original extension or detected media type. A publisher can change its card without changing the page URL, so periodic revalidation is safer than caching forever.
Capture a fresh screenshot when metadata is missing
A screenshot service renders the target in a browser and returns an image. OpenGraph.io documents a URL-encoded endpoint:
GET https://opengraph.io/api/1.1/screenshot/{encoded_url}?app_id=YOUR_APP_ID
Its options include format (jpeg, png or webp), quality, full_page, viewport presets (xs 375×812, sm 1024×768, md 1366×768 and lg 1920×1080), selector, exclude_selectors, dark_mode, capture_delay and navigationTimeout. The documented response includes a screenshot URL and dimensions; those URLs expire after 24 hours, so download the image when it must persist.

For JavaScript-heavy pages, use a deliberate delay or a network-idle setting. A screenshot taken immediately after navigation can contain an empty app shell, skeleton UI or missing images.
Use a browser-rendering endpoint for controlled captures
Cloudflare Browser Run documents POST https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/accounts/<accountId>/browser-rendering/screenshot. The request can contain a URL or HTML, full-page mode, viewport controls, selectors, cookies, HTTP basic authentication, extra headers and gotoOptions. For client-rendered pages, its documentation recommends waiting for networkidle0 or networkidle2 so the rendered content is present.
A typical request body is conceptually:
{
"url": "https://example.com/app",
"screenshotOptions": {"fullPage": false},
"viewport": {"width": 1366, "height": 768},
"gotoOptions": {"waitUntil": "networkidle2"}
}
Use a selector when the preview should contain one component rather than the whole page. Use full-page mode for complete documents, but set practical height and file-size limits before placing the output in a feed.
Make previews dependable
Normalize and validate input
- Accept only absolute
httporhttpsURLs. - Apply redirect, connection and total-operation timeouts.
- Block localhost, private address ranges and unexpected schemes.
- Limit response bytes and image pixel dimensions.
Choose dimensions deliberately
Match the viewport to the destination. A 1366×768 desktop capture is useful for a desktop-oriented card; a narrow preset better represents a mobile layout. If your destination requires one fixed aspect ratio, render at a suitable viewport and crop or compose afterward.

Wait for the content you need
Prefer a selector-based wait when a known element marks readiness. Otherwise use network idle or a measured delay. Lazy-loaded images may require full-page capture or scrolling support; if the service cannot trigger lazy loading, those images may remain absent.
Store provenance
Persist the source URL, capture timestamp, viewport, format, wait strategy and options with the image. This makes a bad preview reproducible and lets you regenerate it after a page redesign.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is the first service to try when you need an automated preview: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; each response reports the result through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, blocked ads or resource types, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

Troubleshoot common failures
The page has no preview image
Check the HTML returned to your server, not only the browser’s inspector. If there is no usable og:image, or the URL returns an HTML error page instead of an image, switch to a screenshot.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Increase the navigation timeout, wait for a readiness selector or network idle, and verify that required scripts and assets are not blocked. For a lazy-loaded page, use full-page capture where supported.

The provider URL stops working later
Some providers return temporary URLs. Download the bytes immediately and serve your cached copy rather than storing only the provider URL.
Captures are unexpectedly expensive or slow
Use Open Graph extraction when the publisher’s card is acceptable, avoid full-page mode unless needed, cache by URL and options, and batch work where the service supports it. ScreenshotNeo does not bill cache hits or failed, blank, timed-out and bot-blocked captures.
A practical implementation sequence
- Normalize and validate the URL.
- Fetch HTML server-side and inspect the first usable
og:image. - Resolve its URL, validate the media type and download it into your cache.
- If no usable image exists, call a screenshot endpoint.
- Choose viewport, format, selector and wait settings for the destination.
- Download temporary provider output and store capture metadata.
- Return the cached image URL to your application and refresh it according to your policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I always prefer an Open Graph image?
Prefer it when the publisher’s designed card is acceptable; use a screenshot when the preview must depict the rendered page or no usable metadata exists.
Can a screenshot show content loaded after the initial HTML?
Yes, if the renderer waits for the required selector, network-idle condition or capture delay. Without a wait strategy, client-rendered content can be missing.
When should I use full-page capture?
Use it when content below the fold belongs in the preview. For a compact card, a fixed viewport or selector capture is usually more appropriate.
