Snipping Tool is the built-in screenshot app in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open its snipping overlay, choose the area or mode you need, then edit, save, copy, or share the capture. Windows also includes separate keyboard shortcuts for saving the entire screen directly to a file or copying the screen to the clipboard.

What is the default screenshot app in Windows?

Microsoft’s default screenshot utility is Snipping Tool. It is included with Windows 10 and Windows 11 and can capture all or part of the display. After taking a snip, the result opens in the Snipping Tool window, where you can make changes or notes, save the image, copy it, or share it.

The app and the shortcut are not the same thing. Windows + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool’s screen-capture overlay; it is not the name of a separate screenshot program. You can also open Snipping Tool from the Start menu by searching for its name.

How to take a screenshot with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the snipping controls appear.
  2. Choose a capture mode from the toolbar.
  3. Select the area, window, or screen you want to capture.
  4. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to review the result.
  5. Use the available controls to annotate, copy, save, or share the image.

The shortcut is useful when you need a selected region quickly. If you want to set a delay, review previous captures, or work from the complete editor, open Snipping Tool first and use its controls.

Snipping Tool capture modes

Rectangular snip

Drag a rectangle around the portion of the screen you want. This is the usual choice for a dialog box, a paragraph, a product detail, or a defined section of a webpage.

Window snip

Select one open window. Snipping Tool captures that window rather than requiring you to draw around it manually.

Full-screen snip

Capture the entire visible display. This is useful when you need everything currently shown on a monitor, including the taskbar and other visible areas.

Freeform snip

Draw an irregular outline around the part of the screen you need. The result follows the freeform selection instead of a rectangle.

Video snip in current Windows 11 instructions

Current Windows 11 instructions also describe video snipping. Press Windows logo key + Shift + R to start a video snip, then select the region to record. Availability and controls can vary by Windows version, so use the Snipping Tool interface on the PC where you are working.

Where Windows saves screenshots

Captures made with Snipping Tool

A snip first appears in the Snipping Tool window. It is not necessarily saved as a file until you choose the save command and select a location. You can also copy the image to the clipboard and paste it into another app without creating a permanent file.

Captures made with Windows + PrtScn

Press Windows logo key + PrtScn to capture the screen and save the image automatically. Windows stores these files in Pictures > Screenshots.

Clipboard-only captures

Depending on your keyboard settings, pressing PrtScn can copy a screenshot to the clipboard. Open an image editor, document, email, or chat and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Clipboard content can be replaced by the next copy operation, so save the image if you need to keep it.

Which Windows screenshot method should you use?

Goal Method Result
Capture a selected area Windows + Shift + S, then rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen mode Snip opens for editing, saving, copying, or sharing
Save the entire screen immediately Windows + PrtScn Image file in Pictures > Screenshots
Paste the screen into another app PrtScn, subject to your keyboard setting Screenshot copied to the clipboard
Record a selected area Windows + Shift + R in current Windows 11 instructions Video snip workflow in Snipping Tool

The first method gives you the most control over what is included. The second is fastest when you need a full-screen file. The third is convenient when the destination app is already open and you do not need a file yet.

Why does Print Screen open Snipping Tool?

Windows can be configured so that the PrtScn key opens screen snipping instead of behaving as a simple clipboard command. Microsoft documents this as a keyboard accessibility setting, so two Windows PCs can respond differently to the same key.

Check the Print Screen setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility.
  3. Open Keyboard.
  4. Find the setting that controls whether the Print Screen key opens screen snipping.
  5. Turn it on or off according to the behavior you want, then test the key again.

If the key still behaves unexpectedly, check whether your keyboard requires a function layer, whether another utility has remapped the key, and whether you are pressing the correct key on a compact laptop keyboard.

What if the keyboard has no Print Screen key?

Some hardware does not include a dedicated PrtScn button. Microsoft notes that certain devices can use Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar for a screenshot. The exact key combination depends on the device, so consult the keyboard markings or manufacturer instructions if that shortcut does not respond.

Troubleshooting Windows screenshots

Windows + Shift + S does nothing

  • Press the Windows key and Shift together before pressing S; pressing S alone only types the letter.
  • Open Snipping Tool from Start to confirm that the app is installed and launches.
  • If you use a managed work computer, a policy or keyboard utility may have disabled or remapped the shortcut.

The screenshot is not in Pictures > Screenshots

That folder is the automatic destination for Windows + PrtScn. A capture made with the snipping overlay may still be open only in Snipping Tool or copied to the clipboard. Save it manually from the Snipping Tool window.

PrtScn copies instead of opening the overlay

This is usually the configured behavior. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and change the Print Screen option if you want the key to launch screen snipping.

The wrong window was captured

Use window snip and select the target window, or use rectangular snip to draw the exact area. A full-screen snip captures everything visible, so it is not suitable when other windows contain private information.

A laptop shortcut does not work

Try the device’s Fn layer, including Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar where supported. External keyboards can also place PrtScn under a secondary key, so inspect the key labels before troubleshooting Windows itself.

You need to capture a page longer than the display

Snipping Tool captures the selected screen content; it is not a general webpage-rendering service. For a long webpage, capture it in sections or use a tool designed to render a URL as an image or PDF.

When a Windows app is enough—and when it is not

Snipping Tool is the right default for ad hoc work: documenting an error, sharing a section of an app, marking up a screen, or saving a full-screen image. It runs locally and does not require a separate screenshot subscription.

A different workflow is needed when a developer must capture URLs automatically, repeat the same capture with fixed settings, process many pages, wait for dynamic content, or integrate screenshots into an application or AI workflow. In those cases, a website screenshot API avoids manually opening a browser and selecting a region.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF for a URL. Before capture, it can accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each step can be turned off.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
