To create a password for a website, use Use Suggested Password in the 1Password browser extension for the quickest flow, or open Password Generator to customize it. In a 1Password app, edit the website’s Login item, select its password field, choose Create a New Password, then save the updated item and submit the new password on the website. Changing the saved item alone does not change the website password.
Generate a password while changing it in your browser
This route lets 1Password suggest and fill a password directly into a website’s change-password form. Make sure you update the right Login item and complete the change on the site. See 1Password’s password generator instructions for changing and strengthening passwords.

- Sign in to the website and open its change-password page. Confirm that the current password is saved in 1Password.
- If the site asks for your current password, select that field and choose the saved login using the 1Password field icon.
- Select the new-password field and choose Use Suggested Password. To customize the result, open the inline settings and choose Password Generator. If no suggestion appears, select the 1Password icon in the field.
- When prompted to update the saved login, accept the update. If 1Password suggests the wrong Login item, choose Update Existing and select the correct one.
- Submit or save the change on the website. The website must accept the new password for the change to take effect.
Generate a password in a 1Password app
Use this route when you want to make the password in the app first, or when filling from the browser is not working. You will need to put the generated password into the website’s change-password form yourself.
- Open the website’s change-password page and retrieve the saved current password if the site requires it.
- In 1Password, find the website’s Login item and choose Edit.
- Select the password field and choose Create a New Password. Adjust the generator settings to meet the website’s rules, then choose Use and save the Login item.
- Copy the new password from the saved item, paste it into the website’s new-password field, and submit the change.
On mobile, autofill may need to be set up. If filling does not work, copying and pasting from the saved Login item is the documented fallback.

Choose the right generation route

The browser extension also offers a generator in its pop-up, where you can adjust settings and copy or fill the result. 1Password’s browser extension guide describes these options and Password Generator History. Menu labels and available options can vary as the apps change, so check the guide if your interface differs.
Make a password for your 1Password account
Your 1Password account password is different from the passwords saved in website Login items. For the account password, 1Password recommends making it unique, random, and memorable with its generator; its guidance says no particular number, symbol, or capitalization requirements apply. Because 1Password says it cannot access or recover this password, write it in your Emergency Kit and keep the kit somewhere safe. Read 1Password’s account-password guidance for the full advice.

1Password says Watchtower checks saved information locally on your device. For compromised-password checks, its Watchtower privacy explanation says a 40-character hash is created and only its first five characters are sent to Have I Been Pwned; candidate results are compared locally. That means the website matching is local, but a hash prefix is transmitted for this vulnerable-password check.
