How Metricbeat gathers and delivers server metrics
One agent on each host
Metricbeat is a lightweight collector that runs locally on the server being monitored. The agent reads operating-system and service interfaces, turns observations into structured events, and publishes those events to a configured destination. A single central installation does not automatically discover every host; each server normally needs its own Metricbeat service unless your architecture deliberately uses another collection pattern.

Modules define what is collected
Metricbeat is modular. A module contains collection logic for a service or platform, while a metricset is a related group of measurements fetched and structured by that module. The System module is the starting point for host-level CPU, memory, network, filesystem, process, and uptime data. Service modules add telemetry for applications such as web servers, databases, or message systems when those modules are available for your release.
Keep module configuration in modules.d; this is the recommended layout. Settings in a file there take precedence over equivalent settings for that module in metricbeat.yml. That precedence matters when troubleshooting a value that appears to be ignored.

Elasticsearch stores events; Kibana displays them
In the standard workflow, Metricbeat publishes events to Elasticsearch. Elasticsearch indexes and searches the documents, and Kibana queries those indices for dashboards and ad-hoc views. The setup command can install index templates and, where supported by the package and release, load dashboards so Kibana knows the field types and has ready-made visualizations.
Plan the deployment before installing agents
Write down the hosts, services, and signals you actually need. Collecting every available metricset at the shortest possible interval increases event volume, storage use, and host overhead without necessarily improving an operational decision.
- Inventory: list each server, operating system, network route to the destination, and the services that require a module.
- Destination: obtain the Elasticsearch endpoint, authentication method, certificate requirements, and the index or data-stream policy used by your environment.
- Access: prepare the least-privileged account or API credential that can publish Metricbeat data and, during setup, perform the template and dashboard actions your release requires.
- Signal policy: decide which metricsets are needed, how quickly each signal must update, and how long the resulting data should be retained.
- Security review: identify operating-system controls such as AppArmor or other Linux security modules that could block access to protected process or kernel interfaces.
Keep clocks reasonably aligned across hosts and the Elasticsearch cluster. Consistent timestamps make rate calculations, process deltas, and Kibana time filtering meaningful.
Install Metricbeat on each monitored server
Install the package supplied for the target operating system and Metricbeat release. Package names, repository steps, configuration paths, and service names can vary by platform, so use the instructions for that exact release rather than copying a command intended for another distribution.
- Install the Metricbeat package with your operating system’s supported package manager.
- Confirm that the executable is available, for example with
metricbeat version. - Check the generated configuration before starting the service. On package-based Linux installations, a typical command is
sudo metricbeat test config; use the equivalent syntax supplied for your platform. - Restrict access to configuration files that contain credentials. Store secrets through the deployment system or keystore mechanism supported by your release instead of leaving reusable passwords readable by ordinary users.
Do not start collecting until the output and module configuration are complete. Starting an agent with an incorrect destination can create a long stream of local errors and no searchable data.
Configure an authenticated Elasticsearch output
Edit metricbeat.yml and configure an authenticated output. A minimal pattern is:

output.elasticsearch:
hosts: [https://elasticsearch.example.internal:9200]
username: ${ELASTIC_USERNAME}
password: ${ELASTIC_PASSWORD}
Replace the endpoint and credential mechanism with the values for your environment. If the cluster requires a custom certificate authority, mutual TLS, or an API key, add the corresponding settings documented for the installed release. Keep TLS verification enabled unless you have a documented, temporary reason to do otherwise.
Test connectivity after saving the file. A common package command is sudo metricbeat test output. A successful configuration test only proves that the file parses; an output test should also confirm that the host can reach Elasticsearch and that authentication is accepted. If the test fails, check DNS, firewalls, proxy settings, certificate trust, credentials, and the account’s publish permissions before changing module settings.
Enable and tailor the System module
Enable the module
Use the module-management command supplied with your package, commonly:
sudo metricbeat modules enable system
This creates or activates /etc/metricbeat/modules.d/system.yml on many Linux packages. Verify the actual path on your installation. The System module applies to the local server, so it does not need a hosts setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose metricsets and a collection period
The documented System defaults include cpu, load, memory, network, process, process_summary, socket_summary, filesystem, fsstat, and uptime. You can reduce that set when a team does not need a signal, or add a supported metricset when the release provides one. A focused Linux-oriented configuration is:
- module: system
metricsets:
- cpu
- memory
- network
- process
- filesystem
- uptime
period: 10s
process.cgroups.enabled: true
The 10-second period is an example, not a universal requirement. Set the period per metricset or module according to the freshness needed by an alert or dashboard. A shorter period gives faster visibility but creates more events and more read work on the host; a longer period lowers overhead but can hide short-lived changes. If different signals have different urgency, configure separate metricset entries or module instances where your release supports that arrangement.

What the main System metricsets represent
| Metricset | Typical operational question | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
cpu |
How busy are the host’s processors and how is time divided? | Interpret values with the host’s CPU count and workload in mind. |
load |
Is runnable or waiting work accumulating? | Load is an operating-system signal, not a direct percentage of CPU use. |
memory |
How much memory is used, available, or reclaimable? | Use the operating system’s definitions when setting thresholds. |
network |
How much traffic and error activity exists on each interface? | Interface names and counters differ across operating systems. |
filesystem |
Which mounted filesystems are filling? | Exclude transient or irrelevant mounts when the release supports filters. |
fsstat |
What aggregate filesystem statistics are present? | Use it alongside filesystem-level data when aggregate views are useful. |
process |
Which processes exist and what resources do they consume? | Produces one document per observed process and can increase event volume substantially. |
process_summary |
What is the host-wide process summary? | Useful for broad dashboards without retaining every process document. |
socket_summary |
What is the overall socket state? | Interpret states in the context of the host’s network role. |
uptime |
How long has the operating system been running? | Useful for reboot tracking and maintenance verification. |
Add service-specific modules only where they add value
After host metrics are working, enable modules for the services you operate. The exact module name, metricsets, fields, and connection settings depend on the Metricbeat release and the service.
- List modules available in the installed package, using the package’s module-list command.
- Enable the required module, for example with
sudo metricbeat modules enable <module-name>. - Edit its file under
modules.dand set the service endpoint, credentials, metricsets, and period. - Apply the service account’s minimum read permissions; do not reuse a broad administrator credential merely because it is convenient.
- Validate the configuration and output, then inspect the module’s events after the service starts.
Unlike the local System module, many service modules need a hosts value because they query a service endpoint. Keep those endpoints and credentials in the module file, and remember that a value in modules.d overrides an equivalent value in metricbeat.yml.

Run the setup action documented for your installed package and release before starting the long-running service. On many installations the command is:
sudo metricbeat setup
This step commonly loads index templates and Kibana assets. It must be able to authenticate for the actions it performs; a credential that can publish events may not have permission to install templates or dashboards. If your security policy separates those duties, run setup once with an approved administrative workflow, then run the agent with its narrower publishing credential.
Start Metricbeat and enable it at boot using the service manager for your operating system. A typical Linux systemd sequence is:
sudo systemctl enable --now metricbeat
sudo systemctl status metricbeat
Use the equivalent service commands on non-systemd platforms. Review the service log immediately after startup. You want to see successful output connection messages and scheduled metricset activity, not repeated authentication, permission, or certificate errors.

Confirm events in Kibana
- Open Kibana connected to the same Elasticsearch environment that receives Metricbeat events.
- Use the data-view management screen to create or select a data view matching
metricbeat-*, if one was not created by setup. - Choose a time field supplied by the Metricbeat integration when Kibana asks for one.
- Open Discover or a Metricbeat dashboard and select the
metricbeat-*data view. - Expand the time range while validating the first events. Kibana’s default time filter shows only the last 15 minutes, so a host that was started earlier or is delayed by setup may appear empty until you widen the range.
- Filter by host identity and metricset name to confirm that the expected server and signals are present.
If the index pattern exists but no documents appear, separate the problem into three checks: is the service running, can it authenticate and publish, and is Kibana querying the right data view and time range? This prevents spending time changing dashboards when the agent never reached Elasticsearch.
Understand process metrics and their edge cases
The process metricset emits one document per process observed during a collection cycle. That detail affects both storage planning and filtering. Use the metricset’s regular-expression filtering support to keep only process names that matter to operations, such as a critical application or a known worker family.
CPU percentages derived from counter deltas require at least two observations of a process. The CPU field can therefore be absent on the first observation, and it may never appear for a process that exits before the next collection period. Treat a missing first value as an expected lifecycle condition rather than immediately declaring the agent broken.
Cgroup collection is enabled by default when the process metricset is active, and it can also be set explicitly as in the example configuration. Confirm that the host’s cgroup layout and permissions expose the information you expect; containers and restricted service accounts can present fewer fields.
Apply least-privilege permissions without losing required data
Grant only the permissions needed by the selected metricsets. Some System metricsets read protected operating-system interfaces. On Linux, AppArmor and other Linux security-module policies can deny process access even when Metricbeat does not directly invoke ptrace. The symptom may be a permission error in the Metricbeat log, missing process fields, or a metricset that starts but returns no events.
Diagnose permission failures in this order:
- Read the Metricbeat service log and identify the exact path or interface being denied.
- Check the operating system’s audit or security log for an AppArmor or other LSM denial.
- Confirm the service user, group membership, and file permissions used by the package.
- Adjust the narrowest policy rule that permits the required read operation, then reload the policy and restart Metricbeat.
- Re-test only the affected metricset; do not grant unrestricted root access as a first response.
Document any policy exception with the metricset that needs it. If a signal is not operationally important, disabling that metricset is safer than weakening host security controls.
Best Value
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The service exits immediately | YAML syntax, an unsupported setting, or an invalid module file | Run the configuration test for the installed release, inspect the reported file and line, and validate module files separately. |
| Output test cannot connect | DNS, routing, firewall, proxy, TLS trust, or an incorrect endpoint | Resolve the hostname from the monitored host, verify the port and certificate chain, and compare the endpoint with the configured URL. |
| Elasticsearch rejects events | Credentials lack publish rights or the cluster rejects the request | Read the rejection status in the Metricbeat log and grant only the index or data-stream permissions required by your deployment. |
| System metrics are missing | The System module is disabled, the file is malformed, or a metricset is not selected | Confirm module enablement, inspect modules.d/system.yml, and check the service log for metricset startup messages. |
| Process data is absent or incomplete | Protected OS interfaces, an LSM denial, filtering rules, or short-lived processes | Check security logs and filters; remember that delta-based CPU fields need a second observation. |
| Kibana shows an empty dashboard | Metricbeat is stopped, publishing is denied, the wrong data view is selected, or the time range is too narrow | Verify service status and output logs, select metricbeat-*, and widen the default 15-minute time range. |
| Storage or ingest volume is unexpectedly high | Too many metricsets, a short period, or unfiltered per-process documents | Increase periods where acceptable, remove unnecessary metricsets, and apply process-name filters. |
Choose the right collection model
Metricbeat is a strong fit when Elasticsearch is the required destination and the team wants packaged modules plus Kibana assets. Compare it with another collector using the same operational questions rather than assuming that every agent has the same trade-offs.
| Decision axis | Metricbeat implication | When another collector may fit better |
|---|---|---|
| Collection model | Runs on each host and reads local operating-system interfaces; service modules can query configured endpoints. | A remote-only model may be preferred where installing agents is prohibited. |
| Built-in coverage | Modules and metricsets provide structured host and service collection with release-specific dashboards. | A smaller custom collector may be preferable when only a few bespoke signals are needed. |
| Destination | Designed for an Elasticsearch and Kibana workflow. | Use a different agent when Prometheus-native scraping, vendor-neutral storage, or an existing organization-wide agent standard is mandatory. |
| Freshness versus overhead | Periods are configurable per metricset or module, allowing a trade-off between update speed and event volume. | A system optimized for aggregated time series may be more efficient for very high-cardinality or ultra-high-frequency workloads. |
| Permissions | Some host and process signals require access to protected operating-system interfaces. | A collector with a different privilege model may be easier to approve on locked-down hosts. |
| Visualization maturity | Setup can provide Metricbeat index templates and Kibana dashboards where supported. | A team already standardized on another visualization stack may not benefit from those assets. |
Operate Metricbeat reliably after the first deployment
Keep configuration reproducible
Manage metricbeat.yml and files in modules.d through the same configuration process used for other host agents. Record the Metricbeat release, enabled metricsets, periods, filters, destination, and required operating-system policy exceptions. This makes a replacement host behave like the original instead of silently collecting a different set of fields.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Watch the collector itself
A green Kibana dashboard does not prove that every host is still publishing. Alert on stale data, repeated output errors, service restarts, and abnormal event gaps. Distinguish a host that is down from a host that is running but blocked by credentials or a security policy.
Control event volume intentionally
Start with the smallest metricset set that answers your operational questions. Add process-level detail only when per-process investigation justifies the additional documents. Review collection periods after observing real alerting needs; a 10-second period may be appropriate for a fast-changing signal, while slower inventory-style measurements can often be collected less frequently.
Test upgrades and policy changes
Metricset names, fields, package paths, security requirements, and dashboard assets can change between releases. Validate configuration syntax, output authentication, templates, and representative dashboards in a staging environment before rolling a new package or tightening an AppArmor or other LSM policy across all servers.
Quick Recap
A repeatable quick-start checklist
- Install the Metricbeat package on every server in scope.
- Configure and test an authenticated Elasticsearch output.
- Enable the System module and select only the required metricsets.
- Set collection periods that balance freshness with host and storage overhead.
- Enable service modules in
modules.dwhen application metrics are required. - Run the release-appropriate setup command to load templates and dashboards.
- Start and enable the service, then inspect its logs.
- Select the
metricbeat-*data view in Kibana and widen the time range beyond 15 minutes when validating first events. - Resolve least-privilege and LSM denials before granting broader access.
- Remember that process CPU percentages may require a second collection cycle and that short-lived processes may never produce a delta.
