You can free PS5 space without deleting saved games: move installed games to USB extended storage, add a compatible M.2 SSD, or remove selected game files when Customize is available. Game installations and saved data are managed separately, so avoid the saved-data deletion controls unless you intend to remove a save.
Check what is using space first
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage. Review the categories to see whether games and apps, media, or saved data account for the space. Focus on game installations if your aim is to reclaim room while keeping progress.

Move games instead of deleting them
Archive games on USB extended storage
USB extended storage is useful for games you are not playing right now. To move a game, open Game Library, highlight the game, press the Options button, choose Move Games and Apps, select the items, and confirm the move.
PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. PlayStation says you need to move the game data back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play it. PS4 games can be played from USB extended storage. The drive must support SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later and have a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB; PlayStation notes that not every device is guaranteed to work. See PlayStation’s USB extended-storage requirements.

Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Formatting a drive as USB extended storage erases data already on that drive. Back up anything you want to keep before formatting, and do not confuse this game-storage format with a regular USB drive used for certain PS4 saves.
Install a compatible M.2 SSD for playable game storage
A compatible M.2 SSD adds storage from which PS5 and PS4 games can be downloaded, copied, and launched. Unlike USB extended storage, it does not require moving a PS5 game back to console storage before you play it. This is a hardware upgrade: the drive must meet PlayStation’s current specifications and cooling requirements, and installation includes fitting and formatting the drive. Check the instructions for your console model before choosing or installing one: PlayStation’s M.2 SSD installation guide.

Remove only selected game data when available
For supported games, you may be able to delete part of an installation rather than the whole game. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the relevant data, and choose Delete. If Customize appears beside a game’s title, PlayStation says you can select and manage portions of its data, such as unused add-ons or parts you have completed. Read the on-screen selection carefully so you know which files you are removing.

Will moving or deleting a game delete its save?
Moving an installed game is a game-storage operation, not the saved-data controls documented under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Keep clear of Upload or Delete from Console Storage if your goal is only to make room by moving an installation. Before deleting any save, verify that you have a backup you can use or that you truly want that saved progress removed.
Choose the storage option that fits
| Option | What it stores | Can you play a PS5 game from it? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | PS5 and PS4 game data | No. Move the PS5 game back to console or M.2 storage first. PS4 games can be played from it. | Useful for archiving, but playing an archived PS5 game requires moving it back. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | PS5 and PS4 game data | Yes | Requires a compatible drive, suitable cooling, and installation. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | PS5 and PS4 saved data | No; it does not store game installations | Requires PlayStation Plus and does not free space occupied by installed games. |
| Regular FAT or exFAT USB drive | PS4 saved data and screenshots/video clips, according to PlayStation’s guide | No | This is not USB extended storage. PlayStation says media copied to USB cannot be copied back to console storage. |
| Selective game-data deletion | Removable portions of supported game installations | Remaining installed portions may be playable | Only offered when a game has Customize; inspect the selection before deleting. |
Keep save management separate
PlayStation documents saved-data controls at Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), then Upload or Delete from Console Storage to manage saves. PlayStation Plus is required for its cloud-storage option. This is separate from USB extended storage for game installations.
