Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo make room for a Nintendo Switch 2 game update, open System Settings > Data Management > Quick Delete, select software you do not need installed right now, and confirm. The software can be downloaded again later, and deleting it does not delete its save data. Avoid the separate Delete Save Data option unless you intend to erase your progress.
Remove software without deleting your progress
On Switch 2, use Quick Delete to remove titles you can reinstall when needed. Nintendo says deleting software leaves save data unaffected, so you can resume your progress after downloading that software again. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Data Management FAQ explains the distinction.

- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management.
- Select Quick Delete.
- Choose the software you no longer need installed, checking the title before confirming.
- Confirm deletion, then retry the game update.
On Switch 2, update data and downloadable content cannot be deleted separately from their software. If those files are taking up room, deleting the software through Data Management is the relevant removal option; you can redownload it later.
Keep captures you want before deleting them
Screenshots and videos also use storage. If you want to keep any captures, first transfer them to a computer or upload them to the Nintendo Switch app, then delete the copies from the console. Nintendo lists both options in its Switch 2 Data Management FAQ.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do not confuse software deletion with save-data deletion
Delete Save Data is a separate Data Management action. Nintendo says save data is stored in the console’s system memory, cannot be moved to a microSD Express card, and cannot be recovered after deletion. It is not a routine way to free space for an update: remove software instead if you want to keep your progress. See Nintendo’s save-data help.
Check the available space and update requirement
Nintendo lists Switch 2 system storage as 256 GB, with some capacity reserved for system use, so the full amount is not available for games. The space an update needs varies by software and update; Nintendo does not give a universal amount. Its support guidance for individual software says sufficient free space in system memory or on a microSD card is required to download an update. Check System Settings > Data Management to see what is using storage, then make enough room for the particular update.

Choose between deleting software and adding a card
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Delete software with Quick Delete | Games you do not need installed at the moment | No purchase is needed, but you must download the software again before playing it. |
| Add a microSD Express card | Keeping more downloaded software installed | Requires buying a compatible card; compare verified compatibility, capacity, current price, and warranty. |
Nintendo documents microSD Express as the Switch 2 expansion-card format. It can store downloaded software, updates, DLC, and screenshots. Do not assume an ordinary microSD card supported by the original Switch is suitable for Switch 2 software expansion. Nintendo’s FAQ also says no individual game currently requires extra storage just to play; that does not guarantee a particular update will fit in the free space remaining on your console.

Move data when replacing a full microSD Express card
If you replace a full card with a larger one, Nintendo’s documented process is to copy the entire Nintendo folder from the old card to a computer, then copy that folder to the new card. Follow Nintendo’s microSD Express card migration instructions.
