Start by checking the free space on the drive where the game will be installed. Then review Windows’ cleanup suggestions, remove or move only files you understand, and check the target drive again. The space a game needs depends on its current installer and updates, so use the game’s current store or publisher requirements rather than a generic rule.
Check the drive the game will use
In File Explorer, open This PC and check the available space shown for the intended install drive. To see what is using space, open Settings > System > Storage. Freeing space on C: will not help if the game is being installed on a different drive.
Check the game’s current store page, publisher requirements, or installer for its space requirement. The figure can vary by game and update; there is no single free-space amount that applies to every large PC game.
Review Windows’ cleanup options
Cleanup recommendations
In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the suggested categories—Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps—and check the estimated space Windows says each selection will free. Select only items you are comfortable removing; these are suggestions to review, not a mandate to delete everything.

Storage Sense
Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and Recycle Bin items. Its behavior depends on your settings: it works on the Windows system drive, and it does not manage Downloads or cloud content by default unless you configure it to do so. Before enabling or running it, check what it is set to remove, particularly if you keep files in Downloads or use OneDrive. Cloud files may be online-only or stored locally, and the settings determine what happens to local copies. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.
Delete or move personal files deliberately
In File Explorer, inspect large folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Sort by size where useful, then delete only files you no longer need. Empty the Recycle Bin to reclaim space from items you deleted.

If you want to keep files, move them to another internal drive or an external drive instead of deleting them. An external drive must be connected whenever you need to access files stored on it. Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guide also covers moving files and using external storage.
Be cautious with the previous Windows installation
Removing a previous Windows installation, often stored in Windows.old, can free space, but it also removes the option to roll back to the previous Windows version. Treat this as a deliberate trade-off, not a routine first cleanup step.

Use another drive if the launcher supports it
Steam
In Steam, open Settings > Storage to add a library on a drive with enough free space. To move an installed game, select the drive where it currently resides, select the game, and choose Move. Steam cautions that installing Steam to an external hard drive can cause performance issues; where available, prefer a suitable internal drive for games. Follow Steam’s current instructions for moving an installation or games.
Epic Games Launcher
Epic Games Store Support documents a more involved relocation process: back up the game folder, uninstall the registered installation, begin installing the game in the new location, cancel after the download starts, copy the backup into the new folder, then resume the installation so the launcher can verify the files. Keep the backup until verification completes. Follow the Epic Games Launcher’s current relocation steps carefully.

Other launchers
Do not assume Steam’s or Epic’s process applies to another launcher. Use that launcher’s current install-location controls, and choose the destination drive when starting the installation if the option is available.

- After each cleanup or move, return to File Explorer > This PC and check available space on the actual target drive.
- Compare that figure with the game’s current store or publisher requirements and any space requirement shown by its installer.
- Start the installation only when the target drive has the space the game specifies. Do not rely on a universal buffer or assume that a cleanup estimate applies to a different drive.
