To free up space safely, use your phone’s built-in storage settings to remove files or apps you no longer need, and check the RPG’s save and account-linking options before deleting its data. Storage cleanup can help when low space is contributing to problems, but it does not guarantee higher frame rates or faster loading: memory, network conditions, heat, battery settings and the game itself can also affect performance.
First distinguish storage problems from performance problems
Storage is where files such as downloads, photos and app data are kept. Memory is working space used by apps and the operating system. Google explains the distinction in its Android storage guidance; freeing file storage is not the same as freeing working memory.

If a game reports that it cannot download an update or your device is nearly full, storage cleanup is a sensible first step. If play stutters, freezes or loads slowly despite available space, check other causes too. Apple lists network conditions, Low Power Mode, device temperature and battery health as factors to consider when an iPhone or iPad runs slowly. Neither Apple nor Google provides a universal estimate for how much a cleanup will improve a particular RPG’s frame rate, loading time or stability.

Free up space on Android
- Review what is using space. Open Settings > Storage. The exact labels and path can vary by Android version and device manufacturer.
- Remove files or apps you no longer need. Delete unneeded downloads and media, or uninstall apps you no longer use. Where available, Android app archiving removes an app while retaining its personal data; you can download it again if it remains available on Google Play.
- Use the game’s own download controls. If the RPG lets you remove optional or previously downloaded assets, use its in-game controls and check what will need to be downloaded again. Available options differ by game.
- Clear cache only for a specific reason. Find the game under its app entry in Settings and choose Clear cache if temporary data may be causing a problem. Google says clearing cache removes temporary data and the app may be slower the next time it opens.
Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage. Google warns that “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data” in its instructions for freeing up Android storage. Treat that option as destructive, not routine maintenance. Before using it—or uninstalling the game—check that your account is linked and that the game’s own support information explains how progress can be recovered. A login screen alone does not establish that every save or download is backed up.

You can copy personal files from an Android phone to a computer over USB and then delete them from the phone. That is an option for files such as photos and documents, not evidence that an installed RPG or its assets can be moved to an external drive.
Free up space on iPhone or iPad
- Check per-app usage and recommendations. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or Settings > General > iPad Storage. Review the listed apps and any system recommendations before choosing what to remove.
- Offload an app to keep its data. Offloading removes the app itself while retaining its documents and data, which can reclaim space used by the app installation. You can reinstall it if it remains available.
- Delete only when the data can go too. Deleting an app removes the app and its related data. Confirm that game progress is recoverable through that specific RPG before deleting it.
- Remove unwanted downloads and files. Look in the app that downloaded the content or in Files, and remove only items you no longer need. Apple notes that iOS and iPadOS manage storage and may remove items that can be downloaded again or are no longer needed.
Apple’s iPhone and iPad storage guidance explains the built-in storage screen and removal options. For general slowdowns, Apple also recommends maintaining at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns. That is Apple’s guidance for iPhone and iPad—not a guarantee of a measurable improvement in a specific RPG or a threshold established for Android.

Choose cleanup steps by risk, not just space recovered

These actions do not come with a guaranteed performance gain. A smaller install or more free space may address a storage-related constraint, while a network, temperature or battery issue needs a different remedy.
Check other causes when play still feels slow
- Network: If the game disconnects, struggles to load online content or has delayed responses, check the connection; freeing storage will not fix a poor network.
- Low Power Mode and battery health: On iPhone or iPad, check whether Low Power Mode is enabled and review battery health if the device is performing poorly.
- Temperature: If the device is hot, give it time to cool and check whether performance changes.
- Unresponsive game: Force-close the game if it is stuck or unresponsive. Apple cautions that force-closing apps unnecessarily can make them slower to reopen; Google says Android users usually do not need to close apps unless one is unresponsive.
Make one change at a time and test the game again. That helps distinguish whether the problem was low storage, a particular app’s temporary data or another condition, without deleting more than necessary.
