To free up Apple Watch storage, first check which apps or synced content use the most space, then remove music, reduce synced photos, or delete apps you no longer need. If the space warning appears during a watchOS update, follow Apple’s model-specific steps and leave unpairing as a last resort.
Check what is using Apple Watch storage
On your watch, open Settings > General > Storage. The screen shows total storage, available storage, and usage by individual apps. You can see the same information on your iPhone in the Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > Storage. See Apple’s guide to app settings and storage.

Remove music stored on the watch
Manage music from your iPhone in the Apple Watch app > My Watch > Apps > Music. The choices depend on how the music got onto the watch.

Remove music you added manually
Tap Edit, then delete the selected items. Apple says music removed from the watch through the iPhone’s Apple Watch app remains on the iPhone.
Stop automatic music additions
If music is added automatically, turn off Recent Music or the applicable automatic-add option in Music settings. This prevents that setting from adding the content to the watch.

Distinguish a watch download from a library deletion
Apple also documents removing music directly in the watch’s Music app for Apple Music subscribers. Take care to remove a download from the watch rather than delete a track from your library: deleting from the library can affect the watch and other devices signed in with the same Apple Account. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app > My Watch > Photos. Choose a smaller synced album, lower Photos Limit, or switch off Photo Syncing. To remove a particular synced photo, remove it from the album selected for syncing.

Depending on your settings, the watch can display photos from the chosen iPhone album, Featured Photos, and Memories. Check how much space photos use on the watch at Settings > General > Storage. Apple’s photo album and storage guide explains these controls.
Delete apps you no longer use
On Apple Watch, press the Digital Crown to open the Home Screen. Touch and hold an app, then use its delete control. You can also manage watch apps in the paired iPhone’s Apple Watch app.

Not every app can be removed. Deleting a watch app does not itself delete that app from the paired iPhone, and Apple says apps—including built-in Apple apps—can be downloaded again. For details, see Apple’s guide to organizing apps.
If a watchOS update still says storage is full
Check your model before following the update recovery steps: Apple’s guidance differs for Series 3 and later models.

Apple Watch Series 4 or later and Apple Watch SE
- Restart the watch, then try the update again.
- If the alert remains, remove music, synced photos, or apps, then retry the update.
- If the alert still persists, use Apple’s unpair-and-update procedure below.
Apple Watch Series 3
Apple directs Series 3 users with this storage alert to the unpair-and-update procedure rather than the restart and cleanup sequence. Confirm the model in the Watch app or on the watch before proceeding.
Unpair, update, and optionally restore
- Keep the watch and iPhone close together while unpairing. If the watch is a GPS + Cellular model, choose to keep the cellular plan.
- Unpair the watch from the iPhone. The iPhone creates a backup during unpairing.
- Set up the watch as new and install the update.
- If you want your previous data and settings back, unpair the watch again and restore it from the latest backup.
Unpairing resets the watch, so use it only after the simpler steps that apply to your model have failed. Apple’s storage-full instructions provide the update recovery sequence.
