How to free up space in Google Photos

Learn whether you need to free Google Account storage or phone storage, then use Photos cleanup, Storage saver conversion, or Android device cleanup safely. The guide covers backup checks, Trash, quality trade-offs, and common storage issues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To free Google Account storage, use Google Photos’ storage manager to review unwanted backed-up items, convert eligible Original-quality uploads to Storage saver, or delete items and empty Google Photos Trash. To free space on an Android phone without deleting cloud copies, use Free up space on this device only after confirming backup is complete; this removes local copies and can affect offline and Gallery access.

Google storage is shared with services such as Gmail and Drive, so first check whether Photos is actually using the space. The steps below help you choose the right cleanup, protect important originals, and avoid deleting files that are not safely backed up.

Your problem Use What happens

Your phone says its storage is full On Android, Google Photos’ Free up space on this device Removes local copies confirmed backed up; the cloud copies remain viewable in Google Photos.
Google Photos will not back up Check account-wide storage and the account selected for backup Photos may not be the largest storage user.

Google says each account includes up to 15 GB of storage shared across Google services. Gmail, Drive, and other data can keep the account full even after you clean up Photos. Check the Google account storage manager at one.google.com/storage/management.

Before deleting anything

  1. Confirm the Google Account shown in Google Photos is the one whose storage is full.
  2. Check that important photos and videos are backed up. Do not assume a local file is safely in the cloud, particularly if backup is paused or its device folder is excluded.
  3. Export or independently preserve irreplaceable originals before deleting or compressing them. Google Takeout is available at takeout.google.com.
  4. Review shared albums, family photos, records, and files that may be the only copy before selecting them.

Check storage and review cleanup suggestions

Google Photos’ storage manager can suggest categories such as large photos and videos, blurry photos, and screenshots. Review suggestions individually rather than selecting everything: large videos can save space, but may also be hard to replace.

  1. Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Open Photos settings, then Backup.
  3. Tap Manage storage, if shown, and review the available categories.

Computer

  1. Go to photos.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click Storage in the navigation area, or open Google’s storage-management tool.
  3. Choose a suggested category, select only items you want to remove, and choose Move to trash.

Menu names and availability can vary by platform, account type, and app version. Google’s instructions are at Google Photos storage management.

Option 1: Delete unwanted backed-up photos and videos

Deleting items from the Google Photos library frees cloud storage only when those items count toward your quota. Search for or browse to unwanted items, select them, and move them to Trash. Prioritize disposable screenshots, accidental recordings, and unwanted videos, but check that each item is backed up and not the only copy you need.

  1. Open Google Photos on the web or in the app and verify the account.
  2. Find items to remove, using storage suggestions or searching and browsing your library.
  3. Review the selected items, then choose Move to trash.
  4. Open Google Photos Trash and review the items again.
  5. If you need storage reclaimed immediately and are certain, permanently delete the selected items or empty Trash.

Backed-up items normally remain in Google Photos Trash for 60 days. Emptying Trash or permanently deleting items removes the normal recovery option. Do not confuse Google Photos Trash with Google Drive Trash, Gmail Trash or Spam, or a device’s Gallery Trash. See Google’s Trash and recovery guidance.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Option 2: Recover space by converting Original-quality uploads

If you want to keep your library but can accept compression, Google Photos offers Recover storage to convert eligible existing Original-quality photos and videos to Storage saver. This is not a lossless or reversible substitute for keeping untouched originals. Export important files first, especially if you edit professionally, print large images, or need archival masters.

  1. On a computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. Click Settings, then Manage storage.
  3. Under Recover storage, choose Convert existing photos & videos to Storage saver.
  4. Review Google’s notice and confirm only if the quality trade-off is acceptable.

Google says conversion can be performed only once per day. Storage saver may resize photos larger than 16 megapixels to 16 megapixels and videos above 1080p to 1080p. Some information may be lost, some files may not be eligible for compression, and eligible files can remain the same size. The conversion affects existing eligible content, not future upload settings. Details: Google Photos backup quality and storage recovery.

Option 3: Free up space on an Android device without deleting cloud copies

Use this option for phone storage, not Google Account storage. Google Photos’ Android feature removes local copies that it confirms are backed up. They remain viewable in Google Photos and at photos.google.com, but may no longer appear in the built-in Gallery app or be available offline. Files less than 30 days old may remain on the device.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Confirm backup is complete for the account and folders you care about.
  2. Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Free up space on this device.
  4. Review the amount of device storage to be reclaimed and choose Free up [amount] from device.

Do not use this feature before checking backup, especially if backup was recently enabled, folders are excluded, you use multiple accounts, or local edits have not synced. Google’s instructions and cautions are at Free up space on your device. On iPhone and iPad, do not assume this Android-specific control is available; device-local storage cleanup is separate from deleting cloud items.

Choose a backup quality for future uploads

Changing future backup quality can slow storage growth, but it does not by itself shrink existing uploads. On Android, open Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then Photos settings, Backup, and Photos & videos quality. On a computer, use Google Photos settings. iOS options may vary.

Quality Storage effect Trade-off
Original quality Uploads count toward Google Account storage. Preserves captured resolution and quality.
Storage saver New uploads generally use account storage. Some files are compressed or resized; photos above 16 MP may be resized to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p.
Express Uses storage where available. More aggressive compression; photos above 3 MP may be resized to 3 MP and videos above 480p to 480p. It is not available in every region.

Storage saver was previously called High quality. Google says eligible Storage saver or Express uploads made before June 1, 2021 generally do not count toward storage; Original-quality uploads count regardless of upload date. Check Google’s current quality guidance before changing settings.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

If storage does not change after cleanup

  • Check Photos Trash. Items still there may not produce the immediate space recovery you expect; permanently deleting them is irreversible.
  • Check the account-wide breakdown. Gmail, Drive, or other data may be the main storage user.
  • Check whether the deleted files counted. Eligible pre–June 1, 2021 uploads may not have counted toward storage in the first place.
  • Allow the estimate to refresh. Storage totals can take time to reflect changes.
  • Check backup status and account. Device-only files do not reduce cloud usage, and another account may be selected for backup.
  • Check conversion eligibility. Some files cannot be reduced, and Recover storage may not appear if there are no eligible items or the account has unlimited Photos storage.

When an account reaches its limit, new Photos backups may stop and Gmail or Drive functions can also be affected. Google says accounts that remain over quota for two years or longer may have content removed under its policies and notices; see Google Account storage policy.

When to consider more storage

If you need to keep Original-quality files and do not want to delete or compress them, a Google One plan may be a better fit. Check the current plans and price for your country and account at Google One; prices and availability vary. More quota also applies to shared Google services, but it will not remove unnecessary backups or duplicates.

FAQ

Does deleting a photo from Google Photos delete it from my phone?

Deleting from the Google Photos library is different from using Android’s Free up space on this device. A library deletion can affect the cloud item and synced views. The device-space feature removes local copies while keeping backed-up cloud copies. Check the selected account and backup status before either action.

How long do deleted photos stay in Google Photos Trash?

Backed-up photos and videos normally remain in Trash for 60 days. Permanently deleting them or emptying Trash removes the normal recovery option.

Can I free Google storage without deleting my photos?

For eligible Original-quality uploads, use Recover storage to convert them to Storage saver, accepting its compression and resizing trade-offs. To free only phone storage on Android, use Free up space on this device after confirming backup.

Why is Recover storage missing?

There may be no eligible Original-quality items, the account may have unlimited Google Photos storage, or the feature may already have been used that day. Account type and interface can also affect availability.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Why did deleting photos not free Google Account storage?

The items may not have counted toward the quota, may still be in Trash, or Photos may not be the main storage user. Check the Google account-wide storage manager and allow the estimate time to refresh.

What is the safest first step if I am not sure what to delete?

Check the account and backup status, then review Google Photos’ storage suggestions without selecting items in bulk. Export irreplaceable originals before deleting or converting them.
