Before upgrading Google One, check what is using your Google Account storage: Google Photos shares its quota with Gmail and Google Drive, so deleting pictures may not solve the problem. Review Google’s storage manager, remove only files you no longer need, and confirm that anything you want to keep has another verified copy before deleting it.
First, check what is actually using your storage
A standard Google Account includes up to 15 GB at no charge, shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. Your available amount can differ depending on your account or plan. Check the storage breakdown in Google Photos or Google One before deciding what to remove. Google documents the Photos app path on Android as Photos settings > Backup > Manage storage; labels and available tools can vary by account. Google’s storage overview explains the shared quota.

If Gmail or Drive accounts for most of the space, cleaning up Photos may recover little. When an account runs out of storage, it can also affect Photos backups, Drive uploads and file creation, and Gmail sending or receiving. Accounts managed through work, school, family, or another group may have different limits or tool availability.

Google’s storage tools can surface categories such as large photos and videos, blurry photos, and screenshots. Review the suggested items and the estimated space to be recovered, where shown. Delete only files you no longer want: a suggestion is not a judgment about whether a memory is worth keeping.

Not every item in Photos counts toward your account quota. Deleting an item that does not count will not reclaim shared storage, so use the account’s storage estimate rather than assuming every deletion creates room. Google says Photos items sent to Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days. Once content is permanently deleted, Google Takeout cannot recover it. Google’s Android storage-management instructions describe the available cleanup tools and related caveats.
Know when Storage saver helps—and when it does not
Storage saver uses less space than Original quality for backups, but it is not a blanket exemption from the account quota. Newer backups generally count. Original quality backups count regardless of upload date. Qualifying Storage saver (formerly High quality) or Express uploads made before June 1, 2021 do not count toward the quota; Google began counting new High quality uploads on that date. Google’s 2020 policy announcement explains the change.

- Compatibility: compatible with PS4/xbox one/Windows/Linux/Mac/Android,Stable and fast downloading on game console no difference from fast transmission when using on PC.

- Package Contents: 1* portable hard drive, 1 *USB 3.0 cable, 1*USB to type C adapter,1 *user manual, shell packaging, three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services
Check the backup-quality setting and the storage details for your account before changing anything. Do not assume that switching to Storage saver converts every existing Original quality file or gives back space for older uploads that were already exempt. The amount of space saved depends on your library and which items currently count. Google’s Google One storage tips provide additional context on backup settings.

Keep cloud cleanup separate from phone cleanup
Free up space on this device removes local copies of photos and videos that have already been backed up. It can help when your phone is full, but it is not the same as deleting files to reduce Google Account storage. Choose the action that matches the problem you are trying to solve.

Make an independent archive before deleting cloud copies
If you want to keep a complete copy outside Google Photos, download your photos and videos to a computer first. Open the downloaded files and verify that the archive is complete and usable before deleting anything from the cloud. A separate drive can be a destination for that archive, but simply connecting or buying a drive does not reduce Google’s storage use. Google documents downloading data in its Photos storage guidance.

| Option | Google Account storage | Quality and cloud access | Main trade-off | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Review and delete unneeded files | Can reclaim space used by deleted items that count toward quota; amount depends on your library. | Deleted items are no longer available in Photos after permanent deletion. | Requires careful review and can cause loss if you delete something you wanted. | No charge for cleanup. |
| Use Storage saver for backups | Can reduce the space used by backups compared with Original quality; savings vary. | Prioritizes space over original backup quality; newer backups generally still count. | Does not make all backups quota-exempt or automatically convert every existing file. | No separate charge for the setting. |
| Download and keep a local archive | Does not reclaim Google storage unless you later delete cloud copies. | Provides a separate copy outside Photos; verify the download before removing cloud files. | You must manage and protect the archive yourself. | No Google storage charge for the download; destination costs vary. |
| Upgrade Google One | Adds paid storage to the Google account. | Preserves a cloud-based workflow. | Creates an ongoing subscription cost. | Google’s US help page listed 100 GB for $1.99 per month when checked in 2026; prices and plans vary by region and can change. |
If cleanup does not bring total use below your available quota, compare the current Google One options and prices for your region rather than relying on an old price. Google’s storage help page lists the US example above; Google’s Photos page describes the service at google.com/photos.
