To free up disk space safely, first check which drive is full and what is using it. Then review Windows’ built-in cleanup suggestions and remove only categories you understand. For personal files you want to keep, move them to external storage or make suitable cloud files online-only instead of deleting them.
Check what is using your storage
Open File Explorer and select This PC to see the free space on each drive. For a more detailed breakdown, open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. Start with the drive that is actually low on space; if you are making room for an update, check which drive Windows needs to use and review its suggested cleanup options. Microsoft’s guide to Storage settings explains the categories.

Use Windows cleanup tools and inspect each choice
Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations if it appears, or select Temporary files. Windows may identify temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Read each category’s description, review what is selected, and deselect anything you want to keep before confirming removal. Temporary-file cleanup and deleting personal files are different decisions: do not assume that a category is safe just because Windows lists it. See Microsoft’s instructions for freeing up drive space.
Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is also available. Search for Disk Cleanup from Start, choose a drive, and inspect the file categories before you confirm. Select Clean up system files when you need to review additional system cleanup categories. If Previous Windows Installation(s) appears, pause: deleting it removes the files needed to return to the previous Windows version, and Microsoft says that deletion cannot be undone. Windows normally removes the previous installation automatically ten days after an upgrade. If you may need to roll back, keep it until you are comfortable with the new version. Microsoft’s separate guide explains what deleting the previous Windows version means.

Set up Storage Sense deliberately
Storage Sense can automatically remove certain temporary files and manage Recycle Bin contents, but its behavior depends on the settings you choose. It works on the system drive; other drives have separate storage views. By default, Storage Sense does not manage files in Downloads or cloud content. You can change those settings, so review them before enabling automatic deletion—especially for Downloads, which may contain files you still need. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense’s online-only management. For the available controls and their defaults, see Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions.
Keep wanted files without keeping every copy on your PC
Find and move large personal files
Look for large items you recognize, particularly videos, music, pictures, and files in Downloads. Move files you want to retain to an external drive or SD card rather than deleting them. A move frees local space only after it completes successfully; keep the external device connected when you need to open those files. Microsoft describes using external storage to move or save infrequently used personal files in its drive-space guidance.

Compare external storage with cloud Files On-Demand
| Choice | Capacity | Internet needed to retrieve a file? | Portability and connection | Local availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| External USB drive or SD card | Depends on the device; Microsoft’s guidance does not specify a best capacity. | No, once the file is stored on the device. | Portable, but the PC needs a compatible port or card reader. | Files are on the external device and are available when it is connected. |
| Cloud Files On-Demand | Depends on the cloud service and account; Microsoft’s cited guidance does not compare capacities. | Yes, to download an online-only file when no local copy is present. | Available through the cloud service on supported devices; access depends on connectivity and service availability. | An online-only file remains visible on the device but must be fetched over a network to open. A file marked Always keep on this device remains stored locally. |
In Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft documents a default that changes inactive OneDrive cloud files to online-only after 30 days; that is a version-specific default, not a guarantee for every Windows installation. Microsoft also explains OneDrive and Storage Sense in Windows 10. An online-only copy saves local disk space, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup.

If space fills up again or updates still fail
If temporary space quickly disappears after cleanup, or Windows updates continue to fail, avoid deleting arbitrary system folders. Microsoft documents a possible Microsoft Store .appx issue that can cause rapid growth in the Temp folder. Its prescribed troubleshooting sequence is to reset the Microsoft Store, clear its cache with wsreset.exe, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restart. Follow Microsoft’s guidance for low-space update errors. Do not manually prune WinSxS, Installer, or other Windows internals based on generic cleanup advice.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 stopped receiving free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows update guidance. Freeing disk space can help with storage-related tasks, but it does not restore that support.
