Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can often free space on a Windows system drive without deleting documents, photos, music, or videos. Start at Settings > System > Storage to see what is using space, then review temporary files and Cleanup recommendations before removing anything. If you still need room, move files you want to keep to another drive or use OneDrive Files On-Demand for files you do not need available offline.
1. Check what is using space
In File Explorer, select This PC and note the free space on your system drive. Then open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved, so you can focus on the source of the space use rather than deleting files at random. Category names and layout can vary by Windows version. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.

2. Review cleanup options before selecting anything
Temporary files
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. Read the descriptions and select only the categories you understand and want removed. Pay particular attention to Previous Windows installation(s): removing these files deletes Windows.old and prevents you from returning to the previous Windows version. Microsoft says the previous installation is normally removed automatically ten days after an upgrade, so do not select it early if you may need to roll back.
On Windows 10, or when you prefer its classic utility, search for Disk Cleanup, choose the drive, review the file-type descriptions, and confirm only the cleanup items you intend to remove. Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows explains these options for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Cleanup recommendations
Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations where available. Windows may suggest temporary files, large or unused files, files synced to the cloud, and unused apps. Inspect the individual selections: a large file may be a personal video you want to keep, and uninstalling an app may not preserve every item of associated personal data. Back up anything important before a consequential cleanup. Microsoft describes the categories in Storage settings in Windows.
3. Automate routine cleanup with Storage Sense
Storage Sense is built into Windows and operates on the system drive. Go to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and choose when it should run, then review each cleanup rule before enabling it. Its defaults can clean temporary files and remove Recycle Bin contents after the configured period. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you configure those settings.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Recycle Bin: If enabled, items may be removed after the period you set. Restore anything you still need before the rule runs.
- Downloads: Enable a Downloads cleanup rule only if you are comfortable with the selected timing and files being deleted. Downloads can contain personal files.
- Cloud content: If configured, Storage Sense can make eligible locally available cloud files online-only. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense cloud management.
These controls and their behavior are documented in Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense. For drives other than the system drive, Windows provides a separate Storage used on other drives view.
4. Keep personal files by moving them off the system drive
If you want to retain files but do not need them on the PC’s internal drive, move them to another drive or external storage such as a USB drive or SD card. In File Explorer, check large folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads; sort by size where that view is available to find files worth relocating. You can also choose another drive for future content where Windows offers that setting.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connect the destination drive and confirm it appears in File Explorer.
- Move the files you want to keep to the destination.
- Open a few files from the destination to verify they are there and usable.
- Only then remove any remaining local copy you no longer need on the system drive.
External storage preserves files outside the system drive; it is not itself a cleanup utility. Check capacity, transfer speed, connector compatibility, durability, portability, and cost when choosing a device. Microsoft describes moving personal files in Free up drive space in Windows.
5. Use OneDrive Files On-Demand for files you do not need offline
OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave a smaller placeholder on your PC while the full-size file remains in OneDrive. That reduces local storage use, but opening an online-only file requires network connectivity. If you need a file available offline, choose Always keep on this device; Storage Sense will not manage that file as cloud content. When you have connectivity and enough free disk space, an online-only file can be made local again. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space and Storage Sense.
Rank #4

6. If space disappears again
If the Temp folder quickly fills again after cleanup, Microsoft notes that Microsoft Store application package files can be involved. This is a recurring-space issue rather than a reason to delete Windows folders manually. Follow Microsoft’s Store cache/reset and Windows Update troubleshooting guidance in Free up drive space in Windows. Avoid manually deleting files from Windows system folders; the supported cleanup tools are safer and show what they intend to remove.
