You can reclaim space on a Windows PC without uninstalling games by reviewing storage usage, cleaning only files you recognize, and moving personal files to another drive. On Xbox, the right steps depend on the console model: check current Xbox Support guidance before moving games or buying a drive, because storage capacity and the ability to launch games from a drive are separate questions.
Free up space on a Windows PC without removing games
1. Check what is using the space
- Check free capacity: Open File Explorer and select This PC to see available space on your drives.
- Check storage categories: Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows breaks usage into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved, and can show connected drives. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.
2. Review cleanup recommendations
Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Windows may show Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps, along with the space it expects each selection to free. Review the items and select only files you recognize and intend to remove; this is a review step, not a reason to clear every category.

Take particular care with Previous Windows installation(s). Microsoft says deleting these files removes Windows.old and can eliminate the option to roll back to the previous Windows version. 3. Set Storage Sense to match your preferences
Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. By default, it does not clean Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. Before enabling or changing automatic cleanup, check what it will remove and when. Storage Sense primarily manages the system drive; use the separate storage controls for other drives. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from cloud-file management. See Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

4. Move personal files you want to keep
Sort large personal folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads by size. Move files you want to keep to an external drive, such as a USB drive or SD card, rather than deleting them. Once moved, they no longer use space on the PC’s internal drive, but you need the external drive connected to open them. You can also choose where Windows saves new content in advanced storage settings; Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance covers moving files and choosing save locations.
5. Use online-only cloud files only when they are backed up
With OneDrive Files On-Demand, online-only files use less local drive space. They require an available cloud copy and an internet connection to retrieve. Do not assume that changing a file to online-only creates a backup: a file that exists only on the PC is not thereby protected in the cloud. Keep files marked Always keep on this device local when you need offline access.

Free up Xbox storage without guessing about game compatibility
First identify your exact Xbox console model, then consult current Xbox Support instructions for that model before changing storage or buying a drive. The available Xbox Support Manage storage page does not provide usable instructions here, so specific menu paths, drive requirements, capacities, and game-launch compatibility cannot be confirmed.

Do not assume that a drive which can store game files can also launch every game. Those are different capabilities, and support can depend on the console generation and drive. Check the current manufacturer guidance for the precise model and game use you have in mind before moving games or purchasing storage.

Choosing external storage for PC files
An external USB drive can help move large PC personal files off the system drive while keeping them. Before buying, check that its capacity and connection suit your PC and the files you plan to store. If you also intend to use it with an Xbox, verify compatibility and game-launch requirements for your exact console model separately; PC file storage alone does not establish Xbox game support.
