Check the right drive before deleting anything
A Steam game does not have to be installed on the same drive as Windows. If Steam says there is not enough disk space, first find the drive selected for this game and check its free space—not just the space available on C:.

- In File Explorer, open This PC and note the available space on each drive.
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage. Review the listed library drives and the games installed in each one.
- When you start installing the game, check which Steam library is selected. If that drive is short on space, choose another listed library with enough room, if available.
- Check the game’s current Steam store page for its storage requirement. Requirements can vary by game and may change; the sources available here do not establish a universal amount of extra installation space beyond what a particular game lists.
Steam’s Settings > Storage page shows the default installation drive and allows an alternate library location. Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying another hard drive and adding a Steam library folder. If the selected library is on a different drive from Windows, cleaning C: may not solve the problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This drive check is worth doing before any cleanup because a PC can have several separate storage locations: the Windows drive, another internal drive, and perhaps a drive already used for a Steam library. Free space on one does not automatically count as free space on another. The destination selected in Steam is the one to compare with the game’s current listed requirement.

If you are unsure which library Steam is using, check the library list and installed-game locations in Settings > Storage before changing files. Do not treat the Windows drive as the destination by default, and do not assume that an error means every drive on the computer is full. First establish whether the intended game library is on the drive that is actually short on space.
Use another Steam library before removing files
If a different drive already has room, directing the new installation there is usually the least disruptive option: it avoids deleting personal files or game content. In Steam’s Settings > Storage, inspect the available library locations, then select the suitable library when installing the new game.
This is especially useful when the shortage is limited to one drive. You can leave the existing files and games on that drive alone and use another listed Steam library for the new install. Confirm the destination during the installation process; simply having another drive connected does not mean Steam has selected it.

Move an installed game to a different library
Steam supports moving an existing game’s installation to another location on the same computer. This can free space on the intended destination drive while keeping the game available from the other library.
- Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage.
- Select the library drive containing the installed game and locate that game in the list.
- Use Steam’s move option to choose another library location on the computer.
- After the move completes, check This PC again to confirm the free space on the drive you plan to use.
The precise controls displayed can vary with Steam’s interface version. Use Steam’s own move function rather than dragging or deleting the game’s installation folder in File Explorer; Steam documents moving game folders through its library management process.
A move is different from uninstalling: the game remains installed, but its installation is placed in another Steam library. The destination library needs enough room for the moved game, so check its available capacity before choosing it. If no other library has room, moving a game between libraries will not solve the overall capacity problem; consider the cleanup options below or another storage drive.
Using Steam’s move process also keeps the change tied to the library management system rather than relying on a manually altered folder. If Steam’s controls or labels look different from these directions, use the current Storage page and its move option rather than guessing at a folder operation.

Uninstall only games you no longer want installed
Removing an unused game through the Steam client can reclaim space occupied by its installation. Before uninstalling, decide whether you will want to play it again soon and check whether its saves or profiles are stored separately from the game files.

Uninstalling a game and uninstalling Steam are different actions. Steam Support warns that removing the Steam client removes Steam and installed game content. Do not use uninstalling Steam as a shortcut to make room. Steam advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first if you are reinstalling Steam and want to keep game installations.
Uninstalling is a reasonable choice when you are comfortable removing that game’s installed content and do not need it installed right now. It is less suitable when you only want to move the game to another drive, since Steam offers a move option for that purpose. Before proceeding, be clear about which action you intend: move to keep the game installed elsewhere, or uninstall to remove its installation.
Check saves before removing game data
Save locations depend on the game and its developer. Steam says some third-party games that do not save through Steam Cloud may keep saves or profiles in DocumentsMy Games, but that is not a universal location. Check the particular game’s documentation or settings before deleting or moving related files. Do not assume that a save is protected simply because it is separate from the main game installation.
Steam Cloud is not a guarantee that every game’s saves are stored there. Developers choose how and where to store saves, and some third-party games keep profiles locally instead. If a save matters to you, check the specific game before uninstalling or moving related files; do not infer the save location from another game or from a general folder name.
Also distinguish removing a single game through Steam from removing the Steam client itself. Steam’s warning about uninstalling Steam concerns the client and installed game content, not merely clearing one unwanted title. If a Steam reinstall is genuinely needed and you want to preserve installations, Steam advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. That is a separate preservation step, not a substitute for checking individual saves.
Clean up Windows storage carefully
Windows includes storage tools that can identify temporary files and other potential cleanup targets. Their labels and features differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Review each category before approving removal, and check free space after a cleanup rather than assuming a particular amount will be recovered.
Use Windows cleanup as a reviewed, targeted step—not as a reason to delete folders whose purpose is unclear. The options shown can vary with the Windows version and the files on the PC. A cleanup tool can identify candidates, but you remain responsible for checking what is selected and whether you still need it.
Windows 11: review Cleanup recommendations
Windows 11’s Cleanup recommendations can show categories including temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Microsoft advises reviewing the selected items before removal.

- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations.
- Review each offered category and the files or apps selected within it. Deselect anything you need or do not understand.
- Run cleanup only for the items you have reviewed, then check free space in This PC.
Pay particular attention to any option involving a previous Windows installation. Removing it can eliminate the ability to roll back an upgrade, so do not select it casually just to clear space for a game.
Large or unused does not necessarily mean unnecessary. A large file might be a personal video, an important archive, or something you still use; an unused app might still be one you want available. Review the actual selection and category before confirming. If you are uncertain what a selected item is or what removing it will do, leave it in place and choose a cleanup target you understand.
Windows 10 and Windows 11: Storage Sense
Microsoft documents Storage Sense as a built-in way to manage storage on Windows 10 and Windows 11, although available controls can differ by version. Find it under Settings > System > Storage, review its settings and available cleanup choices, and run it only when you are comfortable with what it will remove. If an option could affect files you want to keep, leave it unchanged and use a more targeted approach.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Storage Sense is an option to inspect, not a promise that every run will free a useful amount of space. The space recovered depends on which eligible files are present and which choices you approve. After using it, check the same destination drive again rather than assuming that the cleanup affected the Steam library drive.
Windows 10: Disk Cleanup
Microsoft also documents Disk Cleanup for Windows 10. Review the cleanup categories it offers before confirming deletion. As with the other Windows tools, the space recovered depends on the files present and selected; there is no reliable universal amount to expect.
Disk Cleanup is another built-in option when it is available on your Windows 10 PC. It does not change the basic rule: inspect the categories, avoid selecting anything you do not want removed, and verify the available space after the cleanup. There is no need to run every tool automatically; choose a suitable one and review its selections.
Review large personal files separately
Downloads, Videos, Music, and Pictures can contain large files, but they are personal data—not disposable system clutter. Open these folders and decide file by file whether something can be deleted or moved.
- Delete files you no longer need, such as an old installer you can obtain again or a duplicate you have verified.
- Move wanted files to another drive or external storage if you need them but not on the game’s destination drive.
- Keep files whose contents or backups you have not checked. Do not remove an unfamiliar folder merely because it is large.
- Empty the Recycle Bin after deleting files if you have confirmed you will not need to restore them. Until it is emptied, deleted files may continue to occupy space.
For a cloud-synced file, distinguish between removing a local copy and deleting the file from the cloud or other devices. Read the Windows prompt and the relevant service’s behavior before confirming; Cleanup recommendations can identify cloud-synced files, but that does not make every suggested item safe to remove without review.

When you move a wanted file, make sure the new location is on a drive other than the Steam destination if your goal is to free space there. Moving a file to another folder on the same drive changes its location, not the amount of room available on that drive. If the only other option is external storage, it can be useful for offloading personal files, even though Steam cautions against installing Steam to an external hard drive.
For deletion, make the decision before emptying the Recycle Bin. The bin can provide a restore path for files you deleted, but leaving them there may mean the destination drive still does not have the space you expected. Empty it only after confirming that the files are not needed. Windows prompts for cloud-synced items deserve the same care: removing a local copy and deleting a file from a cloud service or other devices are not necessarily the same action.
Compare the ways to make room
| Option | What it changes | Main risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Install to another Steam library | Uses space on a different existing library drive instead of the currently selected one. | That drive must have enough room and be an appropriate destination for the game. |
| Move an installed game with Steam | Moves the game installation to another library on the same computer. | The receiving library needs room; use Steam’s move option instead of manually altering its folder. |
| Uninstall a game through Steam | Removes that game’s installed content. | Check separate save data first; reinstalling later requires installing the game again. |
| Use Windows cleanup tools | Removes reviewed cleanup targets offered by Windows. | Review selections; removing a prior Windows installation can remove the upgrade rollback option. |
| Delete or move personal files | Deletes unneeded files or shifts wanted files off the destination drive. | Deleting needed files can lose personal data; emptying the Recycle Bin removes an easy restore path. |
| Add a compatible internal SSD | Adds longer-term storage capacity when existing drives and cleanup are insufficient. | Compatibility depends on the PC; check supported interface, form factor, and capacity before buying. |
For an immediate shortage, an existing library with room is often the least disruptive option because it avoids removing data. Steam’s move option is useful if an installed game can be relocated to a different library; uninstalling is more direct if you have decided you no longer want that game installed. Windows cleanup and personal-file review can help when those choices are not enough, but they require careful selection. An internal SSD involves purchase and compatibility checks, so it is a longer-term capacity decision rather than a first cleanup step.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recheck space and install to the intended library
After each move, uninstall, cleanup, or file transfer, revisit This PC and check the free space on the drive Steam will use. This makes it easier to see whether a specific action helped and prevents mistaken assumptions that cleaning a different drive fixed the shortage.
- Confirm the destination drive’s available space in File Explorer.
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage and verify the intended library is available.
- Begin the game installation and select that library as the destination.
- If Steam still reports insufficient space, verify the selected library again, check the game’s current listed storage requirement, and consider another library drive. Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another hard drive and adding a Steam library folder.
Neither the official guidance cited here nor the game-independent Windows guidance establishes a universal temporary installation overhead or a predictable quantity of space a cleanup will recover. If the available space remains insufficient, do not assume that deleting arbitrary Windows or game folders is safe; use another library or free space through the reviewed options above.
Rechecking after each step also makes troubleshooting more precise. If the displayed free space changes on a different drive from the one Steam is using, that cleanup did not address the selected destination. If the intended drive still lacks room, return to the Storage page and confirm the library selection before repeating a cleanup or removing more files.
When to add storage—and when not to rely on an external drive
If large games regularly exceed the capacity of the drives you have, a compatible internal SSD is a longer-term option. Check your PC or motherboard documentation for supported interface, form factor, and capacity before purchasing; compatibility cannot be inferred from the fact that a computer already has an SSD.

Adding an internal SSD makes sense only after confirming what the computer supports. The exact interface, form factor, and supported capacity depend on the particular PC or motherboard, so check its documentation rather than choosing a drive based on a generic recommendation. No specific SSD model is suitable for every system, and the sources cited here do not establish which drive fits an individual computer.
Steam Support states: “It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.” That warning is specifically about installing Steam on an external hard drive; it should not be stretched into a claim that all external SSDs perform the same way or are incompatible. External storage can still be useful for offloading personal files, but it is not a blanket recommendation for a Steam installation drive.
In practical terms, separate the two uses: external storage can hold personal files you want to move off the game’s destination drive, while Steam’s stated caution is about installing Steam to an external hard drive. If you need more ongoing capacity for Steam games, first check whether another internal library is available or whether a compatible internal SSD can be added.

This guide follows procedures described by Steam Support in Moving a Steam Installation and Games, Uninstall Steam, and Update & Installation Issues, and by Microsoft Support in Free up drive space in Windows. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, with differences in available tools. Available guidance does not specify how much space a particular user will recover, the exact temporary space needed by a particular game, or which SSD fits a given computer; check the game’s current store requirements and your computer manufacturer’s or motherboard’s storage specifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Steam says there is not enough disk space. What should I check first?
Check the free space on the drive selected for the Steam library, not only on C:. In File Explorer, open This PC; in Steam, open Settings > Storage to see the libraries and installed games. Confirm the selected destination when installing, and compare its free space with the game’s current Steam store requirement.
How do I move a Steam game to another drive?
Use Steam’s Settings > Storage page to locate the installed game and choose Steam’s move option for another library on the same computer. Confirm the receiving library has room. Avoid dragging or deleting the game folder manually.
Will uninstalling a Steam game delete its saves?
Save locations vary by game and developer. Steam says some third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may store saves or profiles in Documents\My Games, but that is not universal. Check the particular game’s documentation or settings before uninstalling or removing related files.
Should I install Steam on an external hard drive?
Steam Support does not recommend installing Steam to an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. External storage can still be useful for moving personal files off the game’s destination drive. For longer-term Steam capacity, consider another existing library or a compatible internal SSD after checking your PC’s specifications.
The Bottom Line
Start with the drive Steam will actually use. Choose another existing library or move a game through Steam before deleting files; review Windows cleanup choices and personal files carefully; and check saves before uninstalling. Recheck the destination drive before installation. If space is a recurring problem, verify compatibility before adding an internal SSD, and do not treat external Steam installation as a universal solution.
