How to Format an External SSD for Steam on Windows

Use NTFS for a Windows-only Steam library on an external SSD, then add its folder in Steam Settings > Storage. Back up files and saves before formatting.

For an external SSD dedicated to a Windows Steam library, format its volume as NTFS, then add that folder in Steam under Settings > Storage. Back up anything you need first: formatting destroys data on the selected volume. Steam does not state NTFS as a formal requirement, but its client notes identify exFAT and FAT32 as filesystems without preallocation support in the context of install and update failures.

Before you format: protect your files and saves

Formatting a volume erases its existing contents. Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance warns that formatting destroys data on the selected partition. Copy anything you want to keep to another location, and check the drive’s capacity and volume carefully before confirming. Selecting the wrong disk can erase files on it, including Windows system data.

Check game saves separately. Steam Cloud is available for some games, but it is not universal. Steam says third-party games that do not save through Steam Cloud may store saves or profiles elsewhere, including the Windows Documents folder. Before removing or formatting any drive that may contain saves, look up how that specific game stores them and back them up if needed.

Which file system should you use?

File system Steam use on Windows Other-device considerations
NTFS Practical choice for a Windows-only Steam library. Microsoft lists NTFS among file systems used for computers, SSDs, and external hard drives. Best suited here when the drive will remain with Windows. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish compatibility for every other device.
exFAT Steam’s client notes name exFAT as an example of a file system without preallocation support, in a note about install or update failures. Prefer NTFS for this use. Often chosen when compatibility across operating systems or devices matters, but the sources cited here do not establish a comprehensive compatibility recommendation for this workflow.
FAT32 Steam also names FAT32 as an example without preallocation support in the same install/update context. It is not a good choice for this Windows Steam library. Not established for this workflow by the cited sources.

This is a practical recommendation, not a Steam compatibility guarantee or a formal NTFS requirement. Steam’s cited note is about preallocation and certain install or update problems; it is not a complete filesystem compatibility matrix. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance gives examples of NTFS and exFAT use.

Format the external SSD in Windows

These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft says Disk Management works the same way in both, although labels can vary slightly between Windows builds.

  1. Connect the SSD and open Disk Management. Search Windows for Create and format hard disk partitions, or press Win + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Identify the external disk. Use its capacity and listed partitions to distinguish it from the Windows/system disk. If the SSD already has a volume, confirm it contains nothing you need before proceeding.
  3. Prepare a new, unallocated disk if necessary. If Windows shows the disk as uninitialized, initialize it when prompted, then create a new simple volume from its unallocated space. For the partition style, Microsoft says GPT suits modern UEFI systems and large drives or drives with more than four partitions; MBR is intended for older hardware or operating systems without UEFI support. Many external SSDs are already partitioned and ready to format, so do not initialize or repartition one unless needed.
  4. Format the target volume. Right-click the correct volume and choose Format. Choose NTFS for a drive dedicated to this Windows Steam library. You can set a recognizable volume label, such as SteamGames, then verify the selected volume before confirming. Windows’ default settings are adequate for a normal format.
  5. Understand Quick Format before selecting it. A quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. It is not a secure wipe. If your goal is secure erasure, do not treat Quick Format as accomplishing that.

Add the formatted SSD as a Steam library

  1. Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Use the Storage interface to add a library location on the external SSD. Choose a folder on the drive when prompted.
  3. If you want new games to install there by default, select that library as the default location in Storage. Otherwise, choose the external library when installing a game.
  4. To relocate games already installed, use Steam’s Storage interface to move them rather than manually moving game folders in File Explorer.

Steam documents adding alternate library paths and moving games in Moving a Steam Installation and Games. The exact controls can change between Steam client revisions.

What changes when the library is on an external drive?

Steam says it does not recommend installing Steam itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. Keeping the Steam client installed internally while using the external SSD for game files is the lower-friction arrangement. External storage also adds a connection risk: if the SSD disconnects while Steam is using the library, Steam may not recognize the games. Connect the drive before starting Steam so its library is available.

If Steam shows installed games as uninstalled, first check that the SSD is connected and that Windows can access its library folder. Steam’s Installed games are appearing as uninstalled guidance covers adding an existing library path again. For persistent library problems, Steam also points users to repair the library folder and verify game files.

When an external library is not working reliably

  • The library disappears: Check the drive connection and confirm the library path still exists. Re-add the existing library path through Steam Storage if needed.
  • Install or update failures recur: Confirm the library is on NTFS and the SSD remains connected during the operation. Steam’s preallocation note names exFAT and FAT32 in the context of these failures, but does not diagnose every possible cause.
  • Games repeatedly become unavailable: If connection or performance problems continue, consider keeping the library on an internal drive instead.
