Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You cannot format a USB drive and keep the files that are on it: formatting erases the drive. To preserve them, copy them to a separate storage location first and verify that the copies open. Then check your TV’s exact model manual for its supported file systems and formatting steps; there is no single format that works for every TV.
Back up the files before formatting
Do not accept a TV or computer prompt to format the drive if it holds the only copy of your files. LG support warns that “all data on the USB storage device will be deleted” during formatting and advises backing up important files first: LG support.

- Stop using the drive if files are missing or a format prompt has appeared. Formatting or continued use could put the only copy at risk.
- Copy the files elsewhere. Use a computer to copy them to another drive or storage location. A second USB drive can work if it has enough free space.
- Verify the backup. Open copied files and make sure the files you need are present before changing the original drive.
A backup is useful only if it is separate from the drive you plan to format and the copied files are readable.

Find the TV’s full model number and consult the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for that model and region. Confirm the supported file systems, any USB capacity limits, and whether the TV has its own formatting procedure. If the instructions are unclear, contact the manufacturer with the model number rather than guessing.

Manufacturer guidance varies. One LG support context lists FAT32 and NTFS; another LG guide also lists exFAT. Sony’s compatibility table varies by BRAVIA generation and operating system. A cited Panasonic manual gives a model-specific FAT32-only example and says NTFS is unsupported. These are not universal rules for other TVs.
| Example guidance | What it applies to |
|---|---|
| FAT32 or NTFS; USB memory up to 32 GB and external storage up to 2 TB | LG USA Support guidance published in 2026; check the page for the models and context it covers: LG support. |
| File-system support varies by model generation and operating system | Sony BRAVIA compatibility guidance: Sony support. |
| FAT32 supported, NTFS unsupported; files over 4 GB unsupported | The cited Panasonic model manual, in a 2023 publication context; these limits apply to that model, not all Panasonic TVs: Panasonic. |
These examples show why a generic recommendation such as “always use FAT32” can be wrong. Capacity limits and per-file limits also differ, so check them separately in the model’s documentation.

Format only after the backup is verified
- Use the procedure documented for your TV. Some TVs provide a format option in their menus; others require formatting the drive on a computer. Follow the instructions for your exact model and intended use.
- Confirm the target drive. Make sure the selected device is the USB drive you intend to prepare, not the backup or another connected storage device.
- Proceed only when ready to erase it. Formatting deletes the files on the selected drive. If the TV’s instructions say that formatting repurposes the drive for a particular feature, make sure that is what you want.
- Eject before unplugging. Use the TV’s eject option if provided, or safely eject the drive from the computer before disconnecting it. LG warns that removing a device without ejecting it can cause errors: LG support.
If the TV recognizes the drive but will not play a file
A supported USB file system does not guarantee that every video or audio file will play. Sony notes that playback may depend on the file. Check the TV’s supported media formats and codecs separately from its USB file-system requirements: Sony support. If the drive is recognized but a particular file is not, reformatting alone may not solve the problem.

If files are already missing or the drive asks to be formatted
Do not format the drive while it contains the only copy of the files. First try to access it from a computer and copy any readable files to another location. If the files are not accessible, avoid writing new data to the drive and seek appropriate data-recovery help before formatting; formatting is not a way to recover files.
