For everyday file storage shared between Windows and Mac, format a Seagate One Touch Portable drive as exFAT. Use NTFS for Windows-only use, or a Mac-native format if the drive is for Mac alone. Formatting erases the selected disk, so back up anything you need and verify the drive’s name and capacity before you erase it.
Seagate says the One Touch Portable is preformatted as exFAT for Mac and Windows compatibility, but a previously used or reformatted drive may have a different format. Seagate’s One Touch Portable manual explains the product’s format options.

Choose a format before you erase the drive
| How you will use the drive | Format to consider | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Move files between Windows and Mac | exFAT | Supports routine read/write use on both platforms. Seagate says exFAT is not compatible with or recommended for built-in Time Machine or Windows File History backups. |
| Windows only | NTFS | Windows’ native option. macOS can read NTFS but cannot natively write to it. |
| Mac only | APFS or HFS+ | Choose in light of your macOS version and backup needs. Check the intended Time Machine version before erasing. |
Seagate notes that exFAT is not journaled and may be more susceptible to corruption when errors occur or a drive is disconnected improperly. Eject the drive safely and avoid choosing exFAT for a built-in backup workflow that requires another format. See Seagate’s format guidance.

- Copy files you want to keep to another storage device. Seagate and Apple warn that formatting or erasing deletes data.
- Identify the One Touch by its displayed name and capacity. If other disks are connected, take extra care not to select one of them.
- If the drive contains needed files but is inaccessible, do not format it as a troubleshooting shortcut. Seagate treats recovery as a separate path when data must be recovered.
- Decide whether you need ordinary file storage or a built-in system backup. That choice affects the appropriate format.
Format the drive in Windows
Format a recognized partition in Disk Management
- Press Windows key + R, type
diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Disk Management. - Find the One Touch volume. Check its name and capacity, then right-click the correct partition and choose Format.
- Choose NTFS for Windows-only use or exFAT for read/write use with both Windows and Mac. Leave allocation-unit size at Default and retain the quick-format selection described by Seagate.
- Review the selection and confirm to start formatting.
These steps follow Seagate’s Windows formatting article. Its instructions are scoped to Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10, so labels or behavior may differ in other releases.

Initialize a new or unallocated disk
If the drive appears as new or unallocated rather than as a usable volume, Disk Management may require initialization and partition setup. Seagate’s documented flow is to initialize the disk, create a New Simple Volume, assign a drive letter, select the file system, and finish the wizard. Its article recommends MBR for drives under 2 TB and GPT for drives over 2 TB; treat this as guidance for the workflow described there, not a universal rule for every current Windows configuration.
If Windows shows a protected EFI System Partition
A drive previously formatted for Mac may show a protected EFI System Partition in Disk Management. Seagate documents using DiskPart’s clean command to remove the disk layout, but this permanently erases the selected disk. Do not use it unless the data can be lost and you have positively identified the One Touch; Seagate recommends disconnecting other drives to reduce the risk of selecting the wrong disk. If you are uncertain, stop rather than run a destructive command. See Seagate’s Windows article.

Format the drive in macOS
- Open Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- Select the external storage device itself in the sidebar, not just a volume beneath it. Selecting the top-level device matters when you need to choose a partition scheme; Apple notes that the Scheme menu may be unavailable when only a volume is selected.
- Click Erase, enter a name, then select the format and scheme. For a drive shared with Windows, choose exFAT. Apple’s guide specifies exFAT for disks over 32 GB and MS-DOS (FAT) for disks of 32 GB or less.
- For Mac use, Apple’s initialization guide identifies GUID Partition Map as the scheme to choose. Confirm that the selected device and format are correct, click Erase, then click Done.
Apple’s menu names and procedures are documented in its guides to formatting a disk for Windows computers in Disk Utility and initializing an external storage device.

For a Mac-only drive, choose APFS or HFS+ according to the macOS and backup version you intend to use; Seagate discusses both formats in its format guidance. Do not choose exFAT for built-in Time Machine backups: Seagate says it is not compatible with or recommended for Time Machine. Check the requirements for your specific macOS and Time Machine version before erasing, especially if the drive will serve as a backup destination.
