Use the NFL’s official injury report for the current game week, then check the team’s official updates and the final inactive list close to kickoff. Practice participation and game status are separate fields: a limited practice does not mean a player is out, and a weekly status can change before the game.
Where to check a player’s status
- Start with the NFL injury report. Find the report for the relevant week and game. It lists player injury information, practice participation and, when applicable, game status. Make sure you are not looking at an old report or a previous week.
- Follow the club’s official updates. A player’s availability can change after a report is issued. NFL policy requires an update when a post-report change could affect availability, with the information released to media and broadcast partners. Recheck the league listing and the team’s official channels as kickoff approaches. The NFL’s injury-report policy and important dates explain the reporting process.
- Check the inactive designation near kickoff. The NFL says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff when they cannot play. That is approximate timing, not a guarantee that every listing will appear at an exact minute. NFL Support’s inactive-player guidance describes the timing.
How to read practice participation and game status
These are different pieces of information. Practice participation reports what a player did in practice; game status is the team’s assessment of expected availability for the game. A player can be limited or miss practice without being declared out.

The NFL Competition Committee’s policy revision says: “If there is any question concerning a player’s availability for the game, he should be listed as ‘Questionable.’” The NFL’s policy-revision article gives the formal definitions.

A blank game-status field is not proof that a player is active. Under the policy, a player considered certain to play can be omitted from the game-status report even if listed on the practice report. Check later team updates and the inactive listing rather than treating omission as confirmation.
When to check during game week
Use the current-season calendar for the report deadline
The weekly reporting deadline depends on the scheduled day of the game. For the 2026–27 season, the NFL’s important-dates page lists regular-season deadlines in New York time: reports are due by 4:00 p.m. or as soon as possible after practice concludes. Sunday games have a Friday game-status report deadline; Monday and midweek games follow different schedules. Check the current NFL calendar for the applicable game-week deadline rather than assuming every team reports on the same day.
Refresh again close to kickoff
The weekly report is an earlier assessment, not the last word. Recheck the league report and the team’s official channels for post-report changes, then look for the inactive designation around 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff. Set a reminder using the game’s actual kickoff time; do not rely on a fixed clock time for every matchup.

Neither practice participation nor the weekly game-status field replaces the later inactive update. For a fan tracking a roster decision or a fantasy player setting a lineup, the practical sequence is the same: current-week NFL report, official team updates, then the game-day inactive listing.
