How to Fly the DJI Mini 3 Pro: Setup and First-Flight Guide

A practical first-flight guide to activating the DJI Mini 3 Pro, preparing for takeoff, practising controls, and understanding its sensing and battery limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fly the DJI Mini 3 Pro, activate it in DJI Fly, choose a legal open location, confirm the aircraft is ready and its Home Point is set, then take off gently and practise nearby while keeping it in visual line of sight. Obstacle sensing can help, but it is not a substitute for watching the aircraft or checking your surroundings.

Before you fly: check the location and rules

DJI recommends flying in an open area away from buildings and obstacles, keeping the aircraft in visual line of sight, and avoiding flight over people, animals, or moving vehicles. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a complete statement of the law. Rules for registration, airspace, distance, and where you may fly depend on your location and the aircraft configuration. Check your aviation authority’s current guidance and an authoritative airspace map before choosing a launch site; do not assume that a weight under 249 g automatically exempts every flight from local requirements.

DJI also says flying within 10 meters above water is not recommended. That is a manufacturer warning, not a universal legal minimum. See DJI’s Mini 3 Pro support page and the rules that apply where you intend to fly.

Activate and connect the aircraft

Activation is required before first use and is completed through DJI Fly. The exact connection steps depend on which controller came with your kit: a DJI RC has a built-in screen, while another controller workflow uses a mobile device.

DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo With DJI RC, 3 Batteries
  • No Registration Needed - Under 249 g, FAA Registration, and Remote ID are not required if you fly for recreational purposes.
  • 4K UHD Stunning Imagery- Film in 4K HDR Video for crystal clear aerial shots. With Dual Native ISO Fusion, Mini 3 enables the capture of details in highlights and shadows, both day and night. [3]
  • Striking Vertical Videos are Ready to Share - With True Vertical Shooting, you can easily capture tall landmarks like skyscrapers and waterfalls.
  • Extended Battery Life - Its flight time can be extended up to 51 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus (sold separately), but the aircraft will weigh more than 249 g. Fly More combo offers up to 114 minutes of total flight time.[2]
  • 38kph (Level 5) Wind Resistant and 3-Axis Gimbal for Stable - With its Level 5 wind resistant and 3-axis mechanical gimbal, Mini 3 can capture consistently smooth 4K imagery. Brushless motors enhance power and allow takeoff at altitudes up to 4,000 meters.
  1. Unfold the aircraft and inspect it and its propellers for damage or anything that could prevent them moving freely.
  2. Power on the aircraft and controller. With a mobile-device controller, connect the phone as directed by the controller setup.
  3. Open DJI Fly and follow the on-screen prompts to activate the aircraft and complete setup.
  4. If the controller needs to be linked, use the app’s Control interface and select “Re-pair to Aircraft (Link),” following the prompts. The DJI beginner guide says a mobile device is not needed with DJI RC.

DJI’s beginner guide covers activation and linking. For exact stick modes, button behavior, and procedures, consult the current Mini 3 Pro Download Center, which lists User Manual v1.6 dated 2024-01-12.

Prepare for takeoff

  1. Choose an open launch area. Check for nearby people, animals, vehicles, buildings, trees, and other obstacles, as well as local airspace restrictions.
  2. Check the aircraft and app. Confirm the propellers are intact and correctly fitted, the battery has sufficient charge for the planned flight, and DJI Fly shows no unresolved warning.
  3. Wait for positioning readiness. DJI recommends taking off with a strong GPS signal. Confirm the Home Point has been established before launching; it provides the aircraft’s recorded return location.
  4. Lift gently and stay close. Use small control inputs to rise into a hover in the open area. Pause and check how the aircraft responds before moving farther away.

These are cautious beginner steps based on DJI’s setup and safety guidance, not a claim that the aircraft or its app can guarantee a safe flight.

Learn the controls and fly conservatively

Controller layouts and stick modes can vary. Use the manual for the specific controller and mode selected in DJI Fly rather than assuming a control diagram applies to every kit. Begin with small movements in an unobstructed area: practise moving in each direction, pausing in a hover, and returning to a nearby landing spot. Keep the aircraft visible and leave room to stop or change direction.

Plan the landing while you still have ample battery. Bring the aircraft back to a clear area, descend smoothly, and land without rushing. If a warning appears or the aircraft behaves unexpectedly, prioritize maintaining visual contact and follow the on-screen or manual guidance for that condition.

Understand obstacle sensing and its limits

The Mini 3 Pro has forward, backward, and downward vision sensors. DJI Fly offers three obstacle-response choices:

Setting DJI-described behavior What to keep in mind
Bypass Attempts to find another path around a detected obstacle; brakes if it cannot bypass. An attempted route change may not be appropriate in every environment. Keep watching the aircraft and its path.
Brake Stops and hovers when an obstacle is sensed. Stopping is not guaranteed for obstacles the sensors do not detect or under unsuitable sensing conditions.
Off Disables the obstacle-sensing response. Do not rely on sensing to avoid obstacles when it is off.

Detection depends on the environment and sensing conditions. The sensors do not make flight collision-proof, so do not treat any setting as permission to fly close to objects or out of sight. DJI’s descriptions are on its support page.

Plan battery time around conditions

DJI lists these maximum flight times for the two battery options. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of usable time on a particular flight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Battery DJI-stated maximum Weight and qualification
Intelligent Flight Battery 34 minutes DJI says this figure was measured at 21.6 kph in windless conditions.
Intelligent Flight Battery Plus 47 minutes About 290 g takeoff weight with this battery, according to DJI; check rules for the actual configuration and location.

The Plus battery is purchased separately. DJI says added weight affects propulsion and advises against adding payloads such as propeller guards or third-party accessories when using it. Real flight time can differ from the stated maximum, so allow a margin to return and land rather than planning to use every advertised minute. Consult DJI’s battery and specification information and check local requirements for the aircraft as configured.

The aircraft has a microSD slot for recording storage; DJI’s beginner guide instructs users to place the card in the aircraft. That guide does not establish a particular card brand, capacity, or speed, so consult DJI’s current supported-card guidance before selecting one.

For QuickTransfer, DJI’s guide describes completing the aircraft self-check, enabling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone, opening DJI Fly, accepting the Mini 3 Pro prompt, and connecting to the aircraft’s Wi-Fi. App prompts can change; if the displayed flow differs, use DJI’s current instructions rather than guessing.

Inspect propellers and replace them correctly

DJI says Mini 3 Pro propellers are screw-mounted rather than quick-release. When replacing them, match the markings: marked propellers go on marked motors, and unmarked propellers go on unmarked motors. Use propellers specified for the Mini 3 Pro and follow the manual’s installation instructions; do not fly with damaged or incorrectly fitted propellers.
