Before every takeoff, verify your requirements, check the airspace and conditions, inspect the aircraft, and be ready to stop or land if anything changes. This guide covers U.S. FAA rules; pilots elsewhere should check their national aviation regulator.
First, identify which FAA rules apply to your flight
The purpose of the operation—not simply whether you are paid at that moment—determines which rule set generally applies. A flight for a business, government, or another non-recreational purpose generally follows Part 107. Recreational flying must qualify for the limited recreational exception and meet its conditions.

| What to compare | Recreational exception | Part 107 |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Only for recreation; other purposes generally do not qualify. | Generally applies to business, government, and other non-recreational operations. |
| Pilot qualification | Pass the FAA’s TRUST test and follow community-based safety guidelines. | A certificated remote pilot must conduct the operation or directly supervise it. |
| Airspace | Obtain FAA authorization before flying in controlled airspace. | Obtain applicable authorization; LAANC may be available for eligible operations. |
| Registration and Remote ID | Registration depends on the aircraft and operation. FAA registration guidance says drones required to be registered, or already registered, must comply with Remote ID. | Registration and Remote ID requirements apply as specified for the aircraft and operation. |
| Night operations | Follow the applicable community-based organization’s safety guidance, including night procedures. | Use anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles when flying at night. |
Check the FAA’s recreational flyer guidance, beginner guidance, and Part 107 overview to confirm which path applies. A drone weighing 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less may qualify for the recreational registration exception when flown under the limited recreational exception; that does not remove the other applicable safety requirements. The FAA’s cited Part 107 overview addresses small unmanned aircraft weighing less than 55 pounds.

Use this preflight sequence before every flight
- Confirm the operation and pilot requirements. Decide whether the flight is recreational or falls under Part 107. Confirm the required TRUST completion or Part 107 qualification, and check registration and Remote ID status for the aircraft and operation. FAA registration guidance currently lists a $5 fee and three-year validity for both the described Part 107 registration and recreational-exception registration, with different coverage. Verify the FAA registration page for current fees and details.
- Check the airspace and restrictions for this place and time. Review airspace information and temporary flight restrictions before launch. If authorization is required, obtain it first. Part 107 pilots may use LAANC where available or follow the FAA process applicable to the operation. The FAA’s Where can I fly? resource can help you assess a location, but do not assume a site that was clear on a previous flight is still unrestricted.
- Assess weather and the full operating environment. Consider local weather, visibility, people and moving vehicles not involved in the operation, surface property, open-air assemblies, and the possibility that someone may enter the operating area. Judge conditions against your aircraft’s capabilities and your ability to maintain control and visual line of sight. The FAA advisory does not set one universal weather threshold for every aircraft; postpone or cancel whenever safe operation is uncertain.
- Inspect the aircraft and control station. Examine the aircraft’s physical condition, propellers and other systems, battery readiness, controller, and communications link. Part 107 requires a preflight inspection that includes checking the link. The FAA does not mandate one universal checklist template. As Rebekah Waters, associate editor of FAA Safety Briefing, puts it: “Developing and consistently using a good preflight checklist helps prevent accidents and is an important part of successful drone operations.” See the FAA’s drone safety resources.
- Brief everyone directly involved. Review operating conditions and emergency procedures, assign roles, establish how participants will communicate, and ensure they know what to do if the aircraft or site becomes unsafe.
- Choose a conservative flight plan. Maintain visual line of sight, keep clear of manned aircraft and ground hazards, and be prepared to land if conditions change. Under Part 107, careless or reckless operation is prohibited, and flights over people are allowed only when the applicable rule permits them.
The FAA’s Part 107 guidance describes requirements and authorizations for operations that need them. Check the rule and applicable authorization rather than assuming that a normal flight permission covers a different kind of operation.

- Waterproof & Easy to Clean: The landing pad is made of high-quality double-sided PU leather, waterproof and dustproof, strong and durable, soiled with dust and mud, just rinse with water and then shake dry
- Portable & Safer: Drone landing pad fits most different size drones. The foldable design makes this drone landing pad easy to carry and can be easily stored in most protective cases or backpacks
- Foldable & Easy to Carry: Drones landing mat for Dji mini5 pro can be quickly folded and opened, easy and fast to use. After folding ,the small portable size can fit most drone case ,easy to carry
- Stable & Protection: The suitable weight also makes the drone landing pad more stable and can't be moved away even under the strong wind. It can easily build smooth takeoff and landing surface in mud, gravel and other bumpy and complex ground environment. So it is a ideal landing pad for your drone
- Two Brightly Color Option: One side is blue and the other red ,make it fashionable and easy to improve visibility outdoors. Even in a dense fog, you can easily land the drone and no need to install reflective tape
Manage the hazards most likely to change a safe flight
- Manned aircraft: Always give way. Move clear or land when needed; a drone must not interfere with manned aircraft.
- People, vehicles, and property: Account for people and moving vehicles not participating in the operation, property on the surface, and anyone who could enter the operating area. Do not fly over people unless the applicable rule permits it.
- Airspace restrictions: Recheck controlled airspace, local restrictions, and temporary flight restrictions for each flight. Obtain required authorization before takeoff.
- Weather and visibility: Wind, precipitation, or poor visibility may exceed what your aircraft or skill can safely handle, or make visual line of sight difficult. No single weather limit fits every aircraft; delay or cancel when safe control is in doubt.
- Control-link or aircraft problems: If the link becomes unreliable or the aircraft develops a problem, use the aircraft’s emergency procedures and land as soon as it is safe to do so.
- Night flying: Recreational pilots should follow their community-based organization’s safety guidance for night operations. Part 107 pilots must use anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles at night.
Know the key U.S. thresholds—and their limits
These figures are tied to the FAA guidance cited here and may change; confirm current requirements before flying.
| Figure | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 0.55 pounds (250 grams) | Weight threshold relevant to the recreational registration exception. | FAA registration guidance accessed in 2026: applies when the drone is flown under the limited recreational exception. |
| Less than 55 pounds | Aircraft scope addressed in the cited Part 107 overview. | FAA overview, 2026. |
| Below 400 feet | General altitude limit in the cited beginner guidance. | FAA beginner guidance accessed in 2026; applicable rules and exceptions still matter. |
| Three statute miles | Visibility requirement for Part 107 anti-collision lighting at night. | FAA beginner guidance accessed in 2026. |
| $5; three years | Listed registration fee and validity period. | FAA registration guidance accessed in 2026; the described Part 107 and recreational-exception registrations have different coverage. Check the FAA page for current terms. |
| 10 days; $500 | Part 107 accident-reporting triggers cited by the FAA. | FAA Part 107 overview dated July 6, 2026: report within 10 days for an operation resulting in serious injury, loss of consciousness, or property damage of at least $500. |
Make the final go/no-go decision
Do not take off if a required authorization is missing, the aircraft or control link is not ready, the site or weather makes safe control uncertain, or people and other hazards cannot be managed. During flight, keep watching the aircraft and operating area; a safe plan is one you can change or end promptly when conditions demand it.
